Is There Anyone Else In Your Family That Collects DDs?

Recommended Posts

katnaper

People often don't understand this hobby and sadly, most of the time its our own family but instead of focusing on that, I would like to hear about positive responses to this hobby by one's own family. Has anyone been introduced into this hobby by a family member? Or maybe you were the one doing the influencing? How did they/you do it? How did it happen? What were their initial reaction and how did they or you influence the other to get into the DD hobby? What do you guys do together to enjoy the hobby? (Like make clothes, take pictures, etc) and lastly, how has this affected your relationship with one another? I'd love to hear how things worked out.

In my case though I haven't convinced my husband to get his own DD yet but he is at least receptive to having the girls around. He says unless Volks does Erza or Lenneth then he's holding out. LOL Someday...

Several years ago I got my little sister into it when I first got my doll. I think she wanted one just because she wanted to do what I was doing (little siblings kinda thing XD).

She saved up almost $200 and I paid for her the rest to get a MDD Mirai (which we got for a great deal haha).

It was really fun because we went places and took pictures together, and I could show her things I found online and we came up with cute outfit ideas ^_^

About a year later she really got into horses and decided she wanted to sell her doll to buy riding gear, and that was then end of that ...She has her own horse now and rides a lot, and has zero interest in dolls or anything like that, so I guess it was just a phase, but it was fun while it lasted

Even when she did have her doll, MDD Mirai was a cowgirl XD

They aren't DDs but a few years back I got my sister into BJDs. She's lost interest in collecting them now since she'd rather spend money on cosplaying, so her girls have joined my slowly expanding dolly family haha;; My sister's first reaction to my first girl was "woah she's light" and then she proceeded to poke Youmu's breasts... \'D While I can't really imagine my sister getting a DD of her own, she does enjoy playing with mine from time to time ^^

My sister did try sewing a dress for my girls once, but I think that was a mix of boredom & the fact she had so many scraps of fabric lying around. The dress didn't turn out as well as she'd like, and she lost interest halfway... I can imagine that she'd be willing to help me draft out patterns when I sew though www.

The rest of my family seems to be fairly neutral about both my DDs and BJDs. My mom has complimented the clothes I've made so far for my girls though.

I think it's great if you can share your hobby with your family-- my sister and I both collect resin BJD's, and she's somewhat interested in DD's. However, we can still share or trade items every now and then since resin BJD's have accessories that are compatible with DD's! Sure makes the hobby a little cheaper at times. :3

At first, my parents were NOT into my DD hobby at all. It took a little bit of time and explaining but once they saw what Manami could do for posing and for my photography hobby, they went along with it. Mom is now all about the girls and will buy things for them at thrift stores just for fun. Dad is like "Whatever" with them.

Now my younger sister, she's into Manami bigtime.... that's her favorite of my girls. After me having Manami for almost a year, she finally broke down and told me she wanted one of her own. So we talked about it and I got her an 04 head for Xmas and gave her my old DD1 body to start out with. She had her for about a year and I finally got her a DD2 body to replace the old DD1. After that my sister got a little more involved and wound up getting another 04 girl from a family friend who used to make clothing for us.

So now my sister has two 04 head girls... Tsubaki on the left and Aiko on the right.

A few other family members have said they like the girls but no one has wanted to take the dive into the hobby. I leave all that enabling for my local doll meet peeps. I've converted MANY people at the doll meets I go to over to DD collecting and some of them have really gone into it full tilt.

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

My wife got her first DD yesterday. I'll be getting my sometime in the near (hopefully) future. Both my girls (13 and 11 years old) showed some interest in DD's but upon seeing one have got the 'fever'. So basically my whole family is bound to be caught up in the DD whirlwind.

It is nice to be able to share something like this with the entire family. It gives us something else to talk about during the day and is a lot of fun.

I think I may have mentioned this before in a post somewhere else, but me being here is all my daughter's fault! That's right...blame the kids when things get expensive!!

She had mentioned DD for quite some time and I was all "Yes, dear. Very nice, dear. Whatever." Then she actually bought her first one! I was amazed!! Having grown up with Barbie dolls, I was blown away by the size and look of her first girl -- Yoko. When she started showing me other girls on this forum, I finally gave in and she helped me build my first one -- Gretchen (an 04 head) -- and several other builds quickly followed. I was totally and completely hooked, though, when she showed me a picture of Melty! (She became my grail and my husband, bless his heart, bought her for me this past Christmas!!)

When our daughter would come home for "play dates" and "sewing dates," my husband was tolerant, but not really very interested. Then he started coming up with various woodworking projects, making different things for our girls. It became something that we started doing together as a hobby in the evenings and on weekends. He also helped with the photography for stories because I really suck at it! The clincher for him, though, was our daughter showing him Saber...and her WEAPONS!! Once he saw the swords and accessories, he was totally hooked and now has two girls of his own, both of whom wield various different kinds of weapons, of course! Now he spends almost as much time designing stuff for them as my daughter and I do. It has become a standard joke when things don't go exactly as planned for one of us to say "Don't bother me right now! I'm enjoying my damn hobby!!!" He is also a member of the forum, but prefers to "lurk" rather than do much commenting. Usually, he just points out posts to me and says "Honey, you should respond to that and tell them...." so I kind of act as his 'comment provider' when there is something he wants to say. We haven't formally introduced all of our girls yet, but we're working at it!

The most wonderful thing about this hobby is sharing it with my husband. We get to be creative, help each other with ideas, but most of all, we get to spend quality time together doing something that is really fun and leads to a lot of laughter and silliness. If I go to bed before him, I'm never sure exactly what I might find the next morning. Once, he arranged three of our girls on my office desk so when I went in to work in the morning, one was sitting in my chair holding a bunch of pictures, one was by the computer holding up my computer glasses, and one was drawing pictures in the margins of my day planner!! It was hilarious!! At Halloween, I found them all gathered in one spot with candy wrappers scattered all over the place! It is this kind of fun that makes the hobby so enjoyable.

As for influencing others, we only recently took one of our girls (Misty) to our Adult Bible Study group. We were not too sure how they would react but the other three couples were totally fascinated by her and had a million questions. They now ask when we will bring our other girls and continually want to see any pictures that we have of them, so who knows? They may be next to join the hobby!! We'll just have to wait and see!!

If anyone in my family was interested enough in my dolls to buy one for themselves, I think I would faint in disbelief!

Even my non-doll friends are politely tolerant but show zero interest.

The girls look so adorable. Too bad that she's no longer in the hobby but you're right, it must have been fun while it lasted and at least she found something she loves.

Hey, who knows? There's always hope Itl'd be awesome if she does draft patterns to get your dolls to do cosplay but its great that you are developing your own sewing skills.

Definitely! Someday, maybe the Hubs might get his own girl and I won't feel so guilty getting new outfits. LOL

I agree! Anything that brings the family together and lets them enjoy something together is always awesome in my book.

I don't have anyone that collects DDs alongside me, but it's cool My mom does enjoy seeing my dolls and whenever she finds dolly sized items she gives them to me My hubby also likes seeing my girls and has his favorite (Momoko who is my favorite too hehe ). Whenever I see something cute I tell him it's for Momoko so he'll be more likely to support the purchasing of said item LOL

My niece has a definite interest in dolls. If she's still interested when she's older, maybe I'll try and save up for one for her.

I love some of these stories! It is so cool that people are able to share their Doll hobby with people in their family. For me, my family just kind of feels indifferent to the whole thing. Hahaha, though my mother said my DDdy had "super human breasts," which she does not like. Oh well, but being married in and 26 I can disregard that for the most part.

My wife just finds it a bit odd. So really, no, haha. No one if my family is a fan.

If you count slightly distant /technically relatives then... lol yes. (Their brother is my first cousin)

Otherwise nope. My whole family thinks my doll hobbies are weird. They can admire them kind of and like the sewing that I do for them, but they aren't huge fans of the dolls themselves on the whole lol.

My little sister wanted to get into them for a bit, but backed out after the talk about "It's fun but does take some time and a little money to make it worth while" talk.

I think it would be cool to have a family member on board, unless it was my mom lmao then I might have a nervous breakdown lmao

Does my roommate count? Otherwise no, there's no one else, yet... My brother is interested in resin dolls however, and so is my cousin, so maybe, just maybe, there is some hope in regards to that!

No one in my family really collects them. Although I have had several comments from family members that do like them. My sister in law used to collect other dolls when she was young so she understands about collecting dolls. I haven't had any negative experiences with them. They sit there being cute and people like that haha.

My parents don't really "get" them at all, but they are ok, with anything that will help me with "practical" hobbies, ie photography and sewing. My sister thinks they're cute, but just has too many other things in her life. Several of my cousins think that the girls are neat, but most of them are also too practical and/or broke to get into an expensive hobby like this one.

Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately according to my savings) I was able to convince my wife that DDs are pretty cool. She now has a few of her own, and even hangs around on the forum sometimes. It is great having someone else to share with. I probably wouldn't have continued my interest nearly as long or as deeply otherwise.

Sadly no for me. My cousin is into bjd/resins but not DD's.

My husband would never have his own, but has taken to calling my (our) girls his "princesses" and spoiling them. ♡
