A Dollfie newbie has a few questions

Recommended Posts

EnchantedGarden

Hello everyone!

Haven't been a part of this community for very long, and am very happy to have found it. I've been interested in getting a Dollfie for awhile, and 2 weeks ago, I got my wish. I was on Mandarake, and came across a DD base body with a head for a steal, and just got her in hand last week. She came with an orange clear box, Volks paperwork and an extra set of hands. (Goodness, she was much larger than I thought!) Needless to say, even in this raw state, I've fallen under the spell of Dollfies, and am already planning on getting a second one.

Now for the questions:

When I went on the Volks USA site, I was puzzled to see that the newest ones have this internal skeleton system, the one I have is strung with white elastic cording. The back of her head is stamped Volks 2003. Her head also doesn't have open eyes, or even indentations for eye decals like the other heads I was seeing on the Web store, just smooth. Is this one of the original base bodies? Also, would a newer head be compatible with her?

I've also noticed that she picks up oils from the hands very easily. Aside from making sure that your hands are super clean, is there a special way of moving a Dollfie body without clothes?

I'll no doubt have more questions later on as I start this grand adventure, but the fact that the body is a little different from the others I've seen has me the most curious. Any and all help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hello EnchantedGarden, congratulations on receiving your first DD girl!

It sounds like you have a Dollfie Dream I, the first generation strung body. DDII and DDIII have internal plastic skeletons. DDII can be completely separated from their skeletons and you can purchase hollow vinyl replacement limbs and torso parts. DDIII have internal skeletons too, but if you buy replacement limbs, they already have the skeleton parts inside them. That's it in a nutshell! There are some good comparison threads here at the DD forum.

You can put any head on any body, though I am not familiar with heads that came with the DDI body, or how they attach. Hopefully someone else here can help you with that.

Thanks for the response, galatia9!

Concerning the head, when you take the head cap off, there's a small S hook that holds the stringing together. Luckily, she came with a booklet that goes into good detail about how to string the part together, with everything joined at the top of the head.

Not sure now if I'll replace the head now after reading this, will look into it more.

You can easily take that hook out to swap heads. I have one of the DD1 bodies and I've had a lot of different heads on it while it was being a placeholder for other bodies coming in. Just get a long twist tie or zip tie and slip it thru the cord where the "S" hook is and pull out the hook. You'll have the zip tie there to keep the cord from falling into the body and to hold onto wen you thread it thru a head and slide the "S" hook back into place.

I was really worried about doing this myself when I got my Rei back in 2010. But after a friend showed me how to do it, it really is pretty easy. So be confident!

And congrats on getting your first DD! If you're getting another DD soon and she's a newer body, you're really going to love the inner skeleton setup. It makes posing SOOOO much easier!

Oh good, I'm glad you have the booklet! I've restrung all my resin BJDs, but none of my DDs are strung. I'm assuming it's pretty much done the same way, especially after reading Billy's comments above.

I have a small printout of how the DD1 body is supposed to be strung and from what quite a few local resin owners said after looking at the sheet, the DD1 was strung completely different from most resin dolls. AsianEd actually restrung my DD1 body for me after doing a lot of digging around online for info and getting that instruction sheet translated. He said it took him quite a while to do but he did a good job on it.

Still, I much prefer the stability and range of posing the newer skeletal systems have over the strung body. I keep the DD1 body as a reminder of where these girls originated but I'll not use that body for any of my girls unless there's some emergency or breakage issue on the body that said girl had previously.
