Male DD face-ups. (thoughts and or faves)

So I have one out of two head that are to be male. I wanted to get ideas and or opinions on how the Male DD should look with his face-up.

 

My boy Gaara will be easy since he's face look will be like the character BUT My El will have the anime look so how is the best way to go about making him without making him look feminine.

 

This I hope will be a over all Male DD thread so post images or ideas also so we can help others.

I think thicker eyebrows kinda like SisterKyoya's Lucas and less eyelashes? Maybe a mod on the eye shape to make for narrower eye holes? Hope that helps somewhat.

indeed it does =). El my boy will have a big scar on the left side of his face so that may help XD. his eyes are large like his sisters (Error is Mariko sculpt) so the default 07 is ok. Gaara on the other hand is wht I am going to get a eye hols closed 07 to mod open.

What I've done with my 4 boys is none of them have lower lashes. To me that is one of the things that easily shows the difference between the genders. (When Anouc did Kiyoteru's faceup, she asked me a few times if I was sure that I didn't want the lower lashes. She never seemed very convinced. )

*looks at her DD pics* Ok, there is one correction to that... Lucas does have the lower lines on his eyes, but that's because I was trying to give him a gothic/punk 'guyliner' look. I think for me this would be the only exception, but even so, there are no additional eyelashes.

 

Eyebrow thickness and placement make a significant difference. Tama's eyebrows are narrow and really curved because he's supposed to be a bishi boy. That was entirely intentional and not an oversight on my part. Lucas on the other hand I went the opposite direction, trying to get him to look as manly as he can and still use a DD sculpt.

 

Do not use red/pink toned blush. Stick with tan/flesh toned colors with a hint of orange. I did this with Tama, Lucas & Ralph and it works really well, and is crucial for the lips. Ralph's lips don't count because he had a lip mod and his are lines painted on. In contrast, both Lucas and Tama have blushed lips, but only Lucas has the dark lines as well. I can blush them like I would any DD head, but I stay away from blushing the cheeks too directly, but the tip of the nose, forehead, area above the eyes, the chin, the sides of the cheeks, ears, and sometimes the underside of the jaw (to give him a stronger jaw line a little) all get blushed in varying amounts.

 

I think most of the time the eyelid fold lines should also be included, but it is totally personal preference. Lucas and Ralph have them, Tama and Kiyoteru don't, although looking at Kiyoteru's ref pics again, he should have had a little. Tama's supposed to look like his eyebrows are raised so they wouldn't be there and it works for him. Realistically when I did his faceup it didn't even occur to me that they should be there. In fact, I think Lucas & Ralph are the only ones of the faceups I've done that do have them.

 

As for eye/facial mods, I think it just depends on the sculpt you are working with and who you are trying to get them to look like. I modded Lucas' upper lip but not his eyes, Kiyoteru should have had a lip mod but I got terrified of doing it on a (then) limited head, and Ralph 'inherited' Rainie's original head that already had the mouth mod done.

Here is Lucas' jaw shading. Most of the time you don't really see it, but it makes a difference in the side view shots to take some of the visual roundness out of the sculpt without having to somehow mod the jaw. It also depends on the sculpt you will be using.

 

 

My thoughts on all of this will surely be tested next year when Sheryl (preorder) will be turned into Madison, the older brother of Sohi and Bree. He's going to need an eye mod, something I'm already nervous about, but the rest of his face is nearly perfect. There is a small possibility that I might sand his jaw a little to make it a little less round, but that's entirely dependent on the thickness of the vinyl.

Thank you Kyoya. its not to late at all the weather is so gorse here I cant seal El and Gaara is on hole until the Smart doll guy head is revelled since I don't want to get the 07 unless the Enji head is not right. (get two birds with one stone if he is ok for Gaara.

 

I do like the look of no lower lid lashes they do help the masculine look and it means El would be easier to do with one lower lid covered by scaring.

I can understand about the weather being not suitable for faceups. I finally was able to get both sets of Volks paint that Miss Lottie has been waiting a year for but now it's too cold for the ZM spray to dry properly so I'll have to wait until late spring/early summer for the weather to be good enough.
