Question about Generation 1 and 2 DDs

Recommended Posts

sharddarkness

I got a odd question and I'm not a 100% sure where to place it in the forum. I know that you need some sort of special attachment for the old DD1 bodies to use the newer heads, but does that mean you need something to attach the DD1 heads to the newer DD2 bodies? Anyone know??

Hey! I know exactly the part you are talking about.... I have one at home. I got it from Volks a while ago and it was pretty cheap. I can get pics of it later if you want me to.

As for the heads going onto other bodies and such, here is what I have done.

I bought a DDI Rei Ayanami form Mandarake in Japan last year. I got her home and after a few months of dealing with the DDI body, I upgraded her to the DDII. The DDI Rei head is exactly like the normal 02 blanks Volks sells. So it went right onto the DDII body with no fuss at all.

I used the old DDI body to make another girl for my sister. I got an 04 head, had it painted and mounted it using the style Volks did.... I used the metal "S" hook inside the head and pulled it thru the string inside. It works just fine without any modifications or extra parts. So you don't really *need* that extra part from Volks for it to work.

In just a few weeks I'll be getting that DDI body back and I planned to do some body comparisons with it, the DDII, the DDdy and the DDS. Hopefully it will help people understand where the new DD3 has come from as well as show how Volks DD bodies have evolved.

I hope this helps you out.

baldylox, when you get your DDI back, maybe you can answer this for me!

I'm curious about the "glove" hands option part that was originally sold with the DDI bodies - is it compatible to the DDII's somehow?

Wow! Thank you, that's perfect. Exactly the info I was looking for!

Rei did come with that set of hands and I have them here. I tried them out recently with the Feena default dress set because it came with long, white gloves. The DDI glove hands WILL work on the DDII bodies with no problems. They are very flexible too, moreso than the regular DDII hands. And the fingers are longer and slimmer too. They look almost alien without gloves on.

But the DDII hands will NOT work on the DDI bodies from what I have seen. I tried a few hands out on the DDI when it was on Rei and none of them would slide over the hand piece under the vinyl. It's an odd shape, very different form the DDII piece.

I'll make sure to take pics of these differences when I get it back tho. I think there are a lot of people who haven't really seen a DDI body since it was only produced for a year. It's interesting for sure but I can't stand it's inability to hold poses. When I get it back, it won't be made into a girl, it will go back in Rei's original box and stay there as a momento of times past.

I made this post before on figure.fm to help Baldylox switch his Rei from a DD1 to a DD2 body. I hope it helps.

Rina wants to go from a DDI to a DDII body

Here is Dollfie Dream Rina trying out Dollfie Dream Mirai's type I body released in 2003. You can see that although Rina was released in 2010, her head is compatible with Mirai's 2003 body. Now, Rina is ready to switch to a type II body.

5065060047_0b61269a2b.jpg

To detach the head from the Dollife Dream Type I body, the head cap must first be removed. I use a butter knife to wedge in between the head cap and the rest of the head to separate the two parts. The head cap can be hard to remove, so a piece of the internal portion near the back of the head can be cut out to provide less resistance.

5065604592_b784970ed3.jpg

Inside the head is an S-shaped hook securing the stringing of the type I body. DD Mirai's 2003 body is strung rather tightly. I lifted the hook and threaded a piece of ribbon through so that the stringing won't escape into the body and make it difficult to attach the next head. You can see in (D) how far the string recedes after the hook is removed.

Now that the S-shaped hook has been removed, Rina's head is freed from the type I body.

An interesting side effect of removing Rina's head cap is seeing her face illuminated from within. Maybe she is casting a powerful spell or about to use psychokinetic powers.

To reattach the head cap, place the front part of the cap into the front part of the base of the head. Now that a piece has been removed, it should be easier to re-insert the rest of the head cap. Squeeze the side to help it fit into the base.

Now Rina's head can be attached to the type II body. The head attaches to a plastic rod that extends past the neck. This rod has limited range of motion.

You can make a small modification to the neck to help the rod move around more freely. All you have to do is remove a small amount of the vinyl at the top of the back of the neck. You can see how the rod can now extend back further allowing Rina to look up.

Chun-chan showcased her lovely modified Mirin on her blog, so I tried for a couple of my girls too. Thanks, Chun-chan!

To attach the head to the type II body, align the head with the rod. The rod has a spring in it that can be hyper-extended, so secure the rod by holding the neck firmly. Push the head down the rod until the next is flush with the head.

Now Rina is in her new body with a bust upgrade and increased neck flexibility.

Excellent tutorial Mitsuki! You doing that for me made it *so* much easier to swap heads out on Rei. You really did a great service to re-post this! Thank you!
