MikoAkiko23 Posted September 18, 2011 Unfortunately, I think my family would think I have problems so I can't exactly get a dollfie dream at the moment even though I want one so bad. I know they will judge me and even though I used to be into barbies (but now I totally hate them except for the expensive international collectible barbie princesses that my cousins still have) I know I want this dollfie like I want to learn Japanese archery (literally I'm desperate to learn kyudo but that's besides the point) It's nice to be able to meet people who won't think I'm wierd for liking dollfies. Its kinda hard here in America because most people will think you have problems but if your in Asia it won't be so bad because that kind of thing is the nrom for them. I like dollfies because to me its like a dream come true....to be able to customize this dollfie to look like anyone even my own characters and that's what make me feel like a proud dollfie lover already. Plus I love to see pictures of other dollfies because it give me both hope and ideas for how I want my first dollfie to look like. Check out my Flickr account for pics of my random artwork: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mikoakiko23/sets/72157627987461066/ Hopefully I should have pics of a first daughter by next year ^^
OtakuDepot Posted September 19, 2011 (Sorry if I get long winded and a little preachy... ) (My comments are also just talking about society morals and not bringing religion into this - that's something that shouldn't be done in a format such as this as it tends to cause many arguments.) ================================ I think we should look seriously at what being a "pervert" means - and is that really such a bad thing. Take the example of pornography. When I grew up it was generally considered that pornography was "perverted". The pornographic industry is just massive and has many millions and millions of customers in many different formats. If such a large portion of society buys pornography, can it really be called "perverted"? If so many people are doing it then isn't that the norm? Back to DD's - I know they are idealized representations of the female form and the target market is generally pointed towards men, but anybody, male or female, can appreciate beauty. Beauty can be shown in many different ways. It can be sexual but it can also be cute, or sad, or kind.... I don't think it's fair to only look at one aspect of it. This attitude of some people calling other groups "perverts" for what they like is sad. It reminds me of High School where people picked on the nerds or geeks - mostly so they diverted attention away from themselves or else they might get picked on. "Someone needs to be on the bottom, if we throw them there then it won't be us". The idea that some collector's of resin dolls saying that DDs are for perverts (or the other way around) is very silly. When it comes down to it we are adults spending ridiculous amounts of money on dolls, none of us should be 'throwing stones'. Just have fun and enjoy what you like and let others do the same. **James I'm secretly a dirty old man. Several of you already know this! Haha - This made my day! I should add: "I'm not a pervert for my DD collection. I may be for my Hentai collection but never my DDs!!!!" dreamcore Posted September 19, 2011 I agree with you completely, OtakuDepot, and I'm glad you pointed all that out. While I can't always relate to others and their hobbies, I always try my best to accept them and see them from their point of view, rather than look down upon them for being different from my own. sharddarkness Posted September 21, 2011 Well I know I'm kinda a pervert. Was one long before learning of Dollfies of any type. Its like saying that if someone like horror or slasher movies then your a serial killer. I've never done anything perverted to any of my girls unless you count sexy photo shoots... Somethings just end up with some sort of strange taboo attached just cause people don't or won't understand.
LordNoir Posted September 21, 2011 It's nice to be able to meet people who won't think I'm wierd for liking dollfies. Its kinda hard here in America because most people will think you have problems but if your in Asia it won't be so bad because that kind of thing is the norm for them. Er..... actually...... Dollfies are a rather niche hobby, even in Japan. They were originally popular with the Gothic Lolita types and began spreading to cater to other lolita groups as well as to the otaku subculture. Even in their home country, dollfies are not considered normal, and Dollfie Dreams in particular tend to be something only found amongst otaku, the truly obsessed collectors who in Japan are far more reclusive than Americans believe them to be. Because of this, even in Japan, Dollfie Dream owners are considered odd, especially if they bring out their girls on public outings and such. Even there, grown men owning toys is considered an oddity, and women should not typically own such things after marriage (it's more of a young single woman's thing apparently.) I apologize for the long post, but I'm often the one who has to do panels at anime conventions regarding Japanese otaku/hikki/etc., so whenever I hear things like "Oh I wish I lived in Japan because cosplay is like a normal thing there" I always smile and then say "Well... er.. you see...actually..." ^^' But back a tad more on topic... ^^ Oh I won't deny at all that I'm a tad bit of a pervert. I blame it on still being immature and certain words still holding connotations that make me giggle. I think everyone's a bit of a pervert, they just don't want to admit it! I mean geesh. I've done such things to my resin boys *cough* Lore*cough* but then again, it's in character for Lore to be pervy and sexy, so why would I not let him be such if he wants? I feel I should point out that at doll meets I have a bit of a reputation *evil smirk* for putting people's dolls into rather interesting positions if they leave the area without them. Typically these things involve Lore because he's my mischievous playful scamp, and are simply written off as a funny meet-up happening, and I know if I ever went off without my dolls for a few minutes, I would fully expect them to be in silly poses when I got back. XOHimitsuOX Posted September 21, 2011 If someone thinks i'm a pervert from owning a DD, i don't want to guess what they're thinking when i pull off their heads, eyes, hands, feet, legs and arms We're all perverts in some sort of manner. Bellatrix Posted September 28, 2011 To saybin italian... ma sticazzi xD I read hentai and yuri, I draw sexy gals, I have figures of cute characters and collect dollfies. But people not call me "pervert" so often. Maybe because I am a girl? Or maybe... maybe because I am a "character" that admits to be condidered original, alternative... and only a bit pervert! I think that depends on you style, your sez and your way to e in relation with the others. Also, I have a boyfriend. That's so happy to consider me a pervert! LordNoir Posted December 14, 2011 I feel like I have to add this little tidbit, just to add a bit more for thought... Yes, these DD girls are based upon anime characters ( even a few from hentai-esque series) so of course people are going to associate them with hentai. Barbie dolls have a larger chest proportion than a DDdy body, and I recall an article mentioning that when Barbies were first released, many considered them very risque. There were barbies based on popular sex symbols of the time, not unlike how there are DDs based on characters popular in hentai. Now after a few decades that has been dispelled and they are mainstream, so few people think of them that way. Maybe give it a few decades and DDs will become a similar way of the Barbie, no one will think of them as strictly perverted dolls anymore. But barbies dress like prostitutes nowadays, the old ones dressed a bit more normal. Since alot of anime out there are hentai (even those really crappy ones), it doesn't shock me that people think that we are perverts. But because there may be some perverts in the DD hobby doesn't mean we all are. And by perverts in the DD hobby, I mean those people who mod girl holes on there doll and then proceed to "screw" their DD's. THAT, in my opinion, is the dark side of this fandom. I just don't get it. How in hell's name does that come up as an option? Back to topic, the risque photoshoots aren't helping that image much. Of course, it's your choice if you do that or not, as long as it's not a MDD doing it, it's fine with me. So no, not everyone is a pervert, but there may be some sprinkled here and there. (By the way, I don't mean to offend anyone by this post, so i'm sorry in advance.)
juu-yuki Posted December 14, 2011 I am guessing people are saying that because they came across a sexy photo of them? I don't think taking sexy pictures of DD or posing them that way is considered perverted. I see it as a form of art more than anything else. If people think DDs are for perverts than they might as well say painting and sculpting are also for perverts because hey, there are a lot of famous artworks out there featuring naked woman XD http://juu-yuki.com Dolly Shop: http://www.lizanna.com

carmen171 Posted December 14, 2011 It's funny how people see DD's. I know from past experience with other collectors that they are always seen as a lesser doll than resins. That is, until they see one in person. Billy I am embaressed to say that this was me up until about a year ago. I have been collecting resin dolls since 2005 and had a very strict "No Girls" rule. I just have never really cared for girl dolls other that Blythe. When I started to see DD's around I was kind of offended at some of the pictures and I was the first one to point out the size of the boobs. I guess my feeling toward DD's changed when I started to watch Anime. Suddenly everything fell into place and I HAD to have a DD. Now I have 13 and I am so thrilled with them. They are truly amazing!!! I still don't collect SD girls, but really admire them in photos as well now. As far as someone thinking I am a pervert because of my DD's? No, they still think I am a pervert for my large Male SD's...LOL. And like I have said somewhere before...I don't care what anyone thinks anyway!!!! Coffee Posted December 15, 2011 I have never, and I will never understand this elitism going around it the BJD communities. Why does a doll, in order to be accepted as a BJD have to be made of RESIN? It bugged the hell out of me. Where in Ball-Jointed Doll does it say "Resin" or with "Realistic-proportions"? And the fact that it is ok for a girl to have any kind of doll, but it is considered "weird/gay/perverted" for a guy to have a doll of any kind? Let's just collect dolls and be happy doll-owners! fenrir z78 Posted December 15, 2011 pervert definition per·vert/pərˈvərt/ Verb: Alter (something) from its original course, meaning, or state to a distortion or corruption of what was first intended. Noun: A person whose sexual behavior is regarded as abnormal and unacceptable. If you fall under the definition of what a pervert is then yes you are. It is that cut and dry. glassjaw Posted December 15, 2011 28M here~ new member. collector of resins dolls for 3 years, Usually limited edition dolls, Dollfie Dream? let say a year already but I only collect character Volks collaboration. I have a 4yr old daughter as well (avatar picture) So I cant call them my daughters, it generally boils down to ones own definition as a hobby, I'm a photographer, and sometimes yeah I like to take pictures of them but not in a lewd way, maybe upskirts? haha~ and that's it. for me its meant to release stress to show how they look like and listen to other people praise your work. and I like to keep it that way. pervert? I dont think so maybe? yes?. In every one of us there must be hidden urges like to collect pretty things. Others just want to release their stress in their own way.. ...I know... its very weird. Lizik-chan Posted December 16, 2011 Thanks for creating such an interesting topic first of all! I was really enjoy reading it so far. And I would like to try to summarise my view on it as well. Sorry it'll take long as I can't put things simple in English 2D complex. Statement - Dollfie Dreams are aimed to resemble sexy anime characters. Common we are finding 2D characters sexy... I'm not sure how many people from this forum are watching "Big Bang Theory" sitcom. But still in one of the latest series it was a scene where Penny told embarrassing things about her ex Leonard to other girl and she mentioned something like "most of his porn is drawn". Personally I think this is what matters to the subject. I suppose most of the people do not find drawn anime girls that sexy. So playing with DDs may seem a "perversion" nor because of sexuality involved but because the source of sexuality is not "common" thus abnormal and you can refer to the definition given by Fenrir at that point. Archetype. Many people writing here have posted the thoughts on Dollfie Dreams possessing somewhat unique design, ideal proportions, that they look cuter, or are generalised anime-beauty image ect. I dare to conclude that DDs are more archetypical representation of female seductive nature. That's why their shoots and images makes stronger impressions. Their "sex-appeal chi" is more focused. This makes them more ideal models for suggesting photo-shoots from one hand. From the other these shoots with them will stick to peoples' minds harder than those with BJD for example. Representation. Try google for Dollfie Dream images. Of first ten images I got I would rather call at least three "provocative". Refer to the previous point. The initial marketing group for DDs is considered to be "ecchi", as a result the whole media representation will follow the same pattern massively. Whenever I am procrastinating at work I always think twice before going through DDs sites because usually they are not safe for work. Though there are many simply cute and innocent DDs images which are more appeal to me, they won't win the pattern and the direction Volks itself is intending for these dolls. Age. To put it short. For adults collecting say above mentioned Barbies is ok. We are playing with DDs. An adult playing with doll is himself a bit disturbing to the casual mass (those having any types of dolls know this is true pretty well). An adult playing with sexy doll... You tell me Sex. I've asked my male friend (who is not in the DDs hobby but is pretty much informed about it) right now if he considered Dollfie Dream hobby perverted. His answer surprised me. He said "no if the males are involved, girls collecting DDs are perverted (yes, you2)". So guys you can relax To be more serious I guess for male dollfie owners this is indeed a problem of "dolls are for girls" prejudice which is not common only for US. I've met a guy who was 200% percent masculine straight ect... And who had to secretly hide his only BJD-girl from his family. Every time I'm remembering this I feel annoyance and even anger. This one is not strictly DD-related problem though a source of a certain perception. So my answer to the subject would rather be affirmative. Not because I feel like I'm or anybody in the hobby are perverted in the definition Wiki gives. But because this hobby has many grounds to be regarded as such by outsiders. I was joining this hobby pretty aware that it has "perverted" media image. I do suppose many of Dollfie owners including myself have a soft spot for some "moe" to "ecchi" things. I'm comfortable with this. Moreover I'm not trying to make the image of DD more "pure". Usually when I'm asked about DD I state something like "these are sexy anime dolls with boobs". Because this is nothing but true. And what is "beauty", "sexy" and "perverted" will always be in the eye of the beholder after all.

PlasticFantastic Posted December 18, 2011 How did I know at some point one of those auctions would get added into this convo?? Hahahaha! Lizik-chan: I don't understand how your friend thinks men with DD can be considered not perverted while women with DD can be? Maybe this is because I'm Canadian.. Either way if we ignore gender stereotypes is it perverted for either sex to play with dolls of the same sex? Say if there were male DD's - would this make men who bought these be viewed as perverts? I find that in society it's generally more accepted for women to be so open with other women whereas men are very guarded around members of the same sex. mitsuki Posted December 18, 2011 That is a fascinating point about how men with male DDs would be viewed, PlasticFantastic. I also agree that lots of cultures are very accepting of close female relationships while men are often not so close.
