Are We Perverts?

2D complex. Statement - Dollfie Dreams are aimed to resemble sexy anime characters. Common we are finding 2D characters sexy...

Honestly, I don't like most BJDs because most of them (Super Dollfies, the various Korean resin-made ones, etc) have a more "realistic" or "3D" look to them. They go past the uncanny valley for me. For those of you who don't know what uncanny valley is, essentially it's when something looks not quite realistic or perhaps even too realistic and it begins to look creepy to the human eye. You mostly hear it in reference to robotics, but it applies to resin dolls in my mind. Their faces, especially their glass eyes, creep me out. That's why I never got into BJDs for the longest time.

DDs are more anime style. So, because of that, uncanny valley doesn't seem to apply to them. They aren't necessarily trying to look like real people. They're like giant, more customizable anime figures that are better made. That appeals to me more than standard BJDs.

Back on topic... I've never heard the pervert line. Granted, most people I know in "real life" don't know about me owning a doll. It's not that I try to hide it, but more that I'm introverted and don't talk to people in general. But if I did, well, I'm female. I feel like most Americans see dolls as a female hobby. If I told them I had a doll, if they didn't see her, they'd probably assume it's similar to Barbie or porcelain doll collecting. If they did see her, and if I told them she's an anime character, they'd probably think it's just another part of the Japanese stuff they know I like.

If people did think of me as a pervert for it, well... I really don't care. I know for a fact my co-workers think I'm weird for lots of other reasons as it is. After all, I did wear a shirt to work on Friday and they gave me a weird look when I told them that the Japanese on it roughly translated to "2D girls are better than 3D girls".

Are you ready to rock? ^_^

Sure maybe, depending on your definition. But by the Freudian definition, everyone is as well. Most instances of being called "perverted" is just a way to deflect from themselves. My friend made a good point, the more vehement someone is about not having porn or thinking in a perverse way even some of the time is probably an even bigger closet perv. Its not that I appreciate excessive outward things like the constant sex jokes one person kept making in high school, but honestly, everyone probably is to some degree. Its all in how we express it ^_~

So no, I don't think we are any more "perverted" collecting dolls than the next person regardless of sex, age or country of origin. We just happen to choose something more visible that someone else uncomfortable with being as open can't accept to themselves. I see nothing wrong with having toys no matter what age you are, the definition of "Toy" is "anything that can be used for play", and "often" but NOT exclusively associated with children. What is play? The definition of "Play" is "voluntary, intrinsically motivated activities normally associated with recreational pleasure and enjoyment".

So if "perversion" means to deviate from the norm, then how can we be considered perverted? Because by definition, we are playing with a toy. If that is considered perverted, then aren't all kids perverted as well? I sure don't think so.

If I'm perverted for buying dolls then so were both of my dead grandmothers and my great aunt. And they seemed to enjoy life and lived a reasonably long time.

That said, I usually ascribe the word perversion to feelings of a sexual nature given to something not of your species. My parrot, Bertie, is a pervert because of how he interacts with his candy cane piñata for example.

Are we perverts?

It's an interesting question which to me, can't easily be answered

It depends on the DD enthusiast and on the judgment of the individual.

To some extent, I think it depends on the particular doll and outfit too.

For me, they are objects of beauty, a 3 dimensional real life representation of the artwork I have enjoyed for such a long time as an anime fan. Similarly I find anime characters, particularly the females very aesthetically pleasing, appealing and compelling to watch, but not sexy (that's just me). A fair few women also seem to enjoy anime, and dolls in similar ways, despite having no sexual desire towards real women, let alone plastic ones.

On the other hand, I have come across some DD bloggers, who have taken explicit and sexual pictures of their dolls nude/semi-nude , and labeled it as 'Doll porn'.

The bottom line is dolls are dolls, and what you want to do with them is upto you. If you feel limited to what is socially regarded as normal, then unless you are a 8 year old girl, or you live in Japan, you shouldn't be playing with fashion dolls anyway.

A lot depends on the individual. I'm sure there are a lot of people in this community who could be accurately described as perverts by one definition or another. I've met some individuals who considered ANY person who had sexual urges to be perverts. Does owning a doll, even if one is an adult male, automatically cause one to become perverted or reflect an already present perversion? Not necessarily. I've certainly seen some pictures that, to my mind, reflect some level of sexual extremism, but most people I have met in the doll community seem relatively mentally/emotionally healthy, or at least not much less so than in any other group of people.

Caveat, I DO tend to run much further on the liberal side of most issues, so my idea of who or what is perverted may not be in line with the majority.
