Fox & Cat (DDdy Ryomou & Kanu)

Once upon a time, there was a fox who lived in a forgotten village deep in the forest. She was bright and lovely both inside and out. She was kitsune, a fox that can change her shape and face. But unlike the other kitsune, her tell was a prominent beauty mark on her face that could not be hidden by makeup. She was utterly unable to fool anyone with her appearance, as kitsune were wont to do. As the years passed, she only grew more beautiful and her friends only grew more jealous. They teased that while she had a pretty face, she was completely useless as a kitsune--she may as well have been born a human. This started as whispered slights but eventually became words of pure poison. So when the formerly cheerful kitsune came of age, she wasted no time leaving her home in tears.

 

Once upon a time, there was a cat who lived with a wealthy nobleman. She was handsome with shimmering dark fur and a dignified bearing. The nobleman loved her, and she loved him in return. One day, a mysterious maiden was invited to live in their home. Her master was alarmingly fond of this girl. The cat knew something was amiss; cats had far sharper senses than a human after all, and this new girl carried the unmistakable scent of the supernatural. Fearing that her master was charmed, she made a wish that she could protect her master forever. The god of cats heard her and made her bakeneko, a cat that can change her shape and face. When she returned to her master to warn him, she realized she had not given him enough credit, for he immediately recognized her human form as his beloved cat. And that he already knew that the new girl was kitsune. He had not been charmed after all.

 

At least not magically.
