Decal question?

Recommended Posts

Melipuffles

Hello everybody! As I am fairly new to this hobby, I am kind of derpy here... I apologize for my noobiness!

So, my first Dollfie Dream was Hatsune Miku, I just received her a few weeks ago, yet I still have not put on her arm decal... I am not sure what to use to put the decal on??

I would prefer to purchase it in person, so is there something I can buy at say...AC Moore, Michaels, or Hobby Lobby?

Also unrelated, but I would love to paint my Mini Dollfie Dreams nails, what kind of paints can I use, and what can I use to seal the paint? Thank you in advance for your help!

are you talking about what they used on picture after they wipe the remaining water? If so, it is this item http://www.hobbywave.com/modeling_supplies/decal/decal-setter-softer/mr-mark-setter.html

It's not necessary but by doing this, the decal can stay more longer than usual or so what I have heard. I'm not sure if the shop you mention sell them but if they do sell some stuff from Japan, hopefully yes.

Also, you can use acrylic paint, pastel or watercolor pencil to color the nails. Just remember to not use oil-based paint material or it will hard to come off. To seal it you can use like Mr.super clear or zoukeimura spray which can be used for faceup too but make sure if you want the flat type or glossy type.

Personally to seal finger nails I would just put on a few coats of gloss. Especially on a more touched area like hands a sealant like MSC can eventually gather dirt and oils and the fingers would then look dirty. Using just gloss would avoid that. I use X-22 gloss by Tamiya, but anything like that will do. Tamiya products can be a bit tricky to find in person now because their factory shut down for a while after the earthquake messed it up. They're of course in production again now but not all hobby retailers have picked them up again. I'm not saying it's impossible to find by any means, I just can't point out any specific retailers as having it.

Thank you! There is actually a store near me that sells Tamiya paints. So I will go there and try those.

I got her decal on without any trouble, and I found the decal set in a store nearby. Thank you for your input everybody. ^_^ I'm so happy!

I would like to hijack this topic a bit.

Could one make their own decals (/has anyone attempted to make their own decals)?

The character I have intended for my doll has some tattoo-like markings on her arms and legs. I have heard that using MSC on Dollfie Dream bodies is not preferred, so I do not think I will be painting her body.

Thus I am considering decals.

You can buy inkjet printable decal paper, just check online or your local hobby shop. It's usually with the model planes and such. I haven't tried it yet but it should work fine for DD tattoos. Although I think you'll be fine using MSC on the arm and leg parts. I'd avoid more flexible parts like the bust, the sealant is likely to look crackly/snowflake due to the flexing of the vinyl.

Thank you, jadepixel! I hope to find it or something like it here!

From my experience with resin dolls, I found that the painted areas are prone to being "scratched" when dressing them. So that is why I am considering decals. But then, for those who have them on their dolls, how long does the decals generally last - on areas exposed to a bit of dressing/redressing treatment - before they have to be replaced..? (Just to see if it would even be worth the effort)
