Eye size comparison?

Recommended Posts

Yumeiro

Did a bit of searching, but most just resulted in dead links.

So I must ask... Is there anyone who has any pictures comparing eye sizes?

I must have spent more than an hour yesterday trying to change my girls eyes - or rather, fit them.

I think they might be too big, as they touch on the inside... Move one and you move the other, kind of thing.

Maybe it is just the brand - I have seen many just "Not Volks please!". So what is the deal with that..? Are Volks own eyes generally no good..?

I have size 24 eyes, from volks, in a DDH-06.

Does anyone have pictures of how 22mm sized eyes fit in an 06 to show off..? Or a comparison between 22 and 24mm eyes in an 06?

Hmmm, that's an odd problem to have. The 06 has very big eye holes and quite a bit of space between them, so there should be no issue fitting larger eyes in the head. The recommended size for the 06 is 24mm, too (personally I think 22mm are way too small and give the doll an unattractive "thousand-yard stare").

Are you using Volks animetic eyes or Volks glass eyes?

I put a pair of Volks 24mm animetic eyes in my DDH-06 with no problem:

PearGreen01S_zpseb344ace.jpg

I've also put 24mm eyes from other manufacturers in her head, and I've still had no issue with the size.

How much eye putty are you using? If you're using too much, that might be part of the problem.

Generally, people aren't interested in Volks standard eyes because the colors aren't very brilliant and they don't have a ton of depth when compared to higher-end brands. It kind of make sense, considering Volks standard eyes are 1/2 or 1/3 the price of other eyes, so Volks are just cheaper overall. But many of Volks LE eyes are quite popular and in demand, since they tend to do more inventive designs and better colors in the LE dolls.

I heard that 24 is what a 06 should have, so that is why I brought them. Just wondering if Volks eyes were a bad choice due to something related to how they were made/functionality. But if it is just ascetics then that is a relief to me (I think that they are quite nice).

But yes, it is their animetic eyes, not glass.

The eyes look ok in my doll, but like I said, it takes forever for me to set them...

There is a chance I might be using too much putty, yes. I will have to really look into that.

Just, since their heads are so soft, when I put the headcap... well, a slight squeeze of the head and the eyes brush against each other and out of alignment...

So I will start with checking on if it is the putty pushing them together. Thanks for the tip, Cauldroness!

I think another reason people aren't as interested in Volks eyes is because they are too "standard"... people want special eyes, not ones that everyone has seen and probably already owned. I know I'd really love some Totechi or WDS eyes.... I find the quality of Volks eyes to be good, they are better than some of the other animetic eyes I've seen around. I end up mostly buying Volks eyes, though, because they are so much easier to get a hold of--I just wish they had more colors!

I've had the eyes-bumping problem with Nanoha's eyes (both her defaults and the customs I made her), which are also 24mm. I resorted to putting the putty almost exclusively towards the temples when placing the eyes, then held them in place while I very carefully packed in some extra top and bottom--with basically none in between the eyes. (Agatha has a bunch in between hers, but her eyes are 18mm.)

What I don't much care for about Volks standard eyes is that the hues are mostly very. . . primary, especially on the older designs. Like, the green often reminds me more of children's blocks than an anime character. :/

Agatha and Nanoha are both wearing eyes I made using Pupa Paradise bases; Miku may end up with a pair like that too at some point. Homura's are painted on, but if she was an open-eye head she may very well have gotten the same treatment.

In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

I had some touch-ups to make on her face-up, so I obviously had to remove the eyes.

And without any putty the eyes touch... So... :/

I took a picture of it before I put them back, so once I am allowed to post pictures I will make sure to show how it looks.

I was wondering if it could just have been a bad batch of eyes... But since Poofiemus describe a similar problem with both defaults and custom ones, maybe it is the heads themselves..?

Well, some heads are definitely not designed to wear 24mm. Like, most brands of 24mm eyes in Erica Fontaine will definitely bump and cause problems, because she's only designed to take 22mm (although I'm able to put some brands of 24mm in her; e.g., Arietta Project's 24mm are slightly on the small side and fit fine). But the 06 should be able to take 24mm. I'll try to open my 06 tonight and peek inside, see what I did to get the Volks 24mm to fit.

(Worst-case scenario, you can sand down the sides of the eyes to prevent them from bumping as much.)

I meant that the 06 batches varies. Such as how yours works with 24mm eyes while mine and poofiemus (which I assume is an 06) does not. (Well, work and work... It is a tight fit.)

There is not anything work with the look of them, or rather, how they look in the doll, it is just the time and seemingly required precision of a bottle-rocket-ship-builder to make them sit right!

So maybe I am just complaining...

I think you're a little confused, Poofiemus doesn't own a DDH-06. She's talking about other heads in her possession.

Poofiemus's Nanoha is a Nanoha head, not an DDH-06 head:

http://myfigurecollection.net/item/10486

I believe Nanoha's default eyes are 24mm, similar to the way that the DDH-06's "default" eyes are 24mm, but it's still a different head. Poofiemus's Agatha, iirc, is a DDH-03 head, and I'm pretty sure the "default" eyes are 22mm for the 03.

I'll try to peek inside my 06's head and see what's going on. She's a soft headcap version, so idk if there was a change between the hard-cap and the soft-cap versions that would affect how the eyes sit.

A little confused...

I simply assumed, since she was brought up, and had in the same wave forgot that there is a DD named Nanoha and not what Poofiemus named their doll.

My 06 is a soft headcap too.

All 06s are soft head cap I think. They were first released after that was an option.

My 06 wears 24mm Twin Snow eyes. They are very close togethre inside but not touching. I'm not sure if its just the brand or not but unfortunately I don't have any 24mm Volks eyes to try in her.

I don't have an 06 head, but I know what you mean. Sometimes when I adjust the eyes in my dolls (even the eyes that the limited girls came with) it can feel like they just don't want to fit. Is it preventing the eyes from going in the position that you want them to, or is it just causing difficulty putting them in? If it's just annoying to put in, maybe put one in first with no putty in the middle (where it'd touch the other eye). Then put the 2nd eye in, adjust them how you want, and then put supporting putty around it so it wouldn't move. Hopefully if you can't find a solution you can post some pictures to make it easier to help you.

Both!

Getting them in position is what makes it difficult. You set one in position and then go for the next one... which moves the first eye out of alignment...

But here is a picture. The eyes are just about set right here, without putty:

(Well not completely without putty...) Sorry for the mess!! My putty is quite messy; I did not bother to clean them before I took the pic.

Thats about how mine looks. How do you put the putty on? I roll out a snake shape and put it around the edge of the eye then put the eye in. Since the eyes have little space between them I believe in my 06 I put one snake all the way around but the other only about 3/4 around. Then I used a thin blunt tool to push the putty between onto both eyes, and then adjust alignment.

I did it like that too first, but it did not work that well for me.

So now I put a bit of putty down at the bottom of the socket and place one eye in, just so it sticks. Then, when I have aligned it right, I put some more putty on the top (and just a little more on bottom too) and finally on the side/at her temple to secure it.

Then repeat with the other eye.

I had that touching issue in my 02 test head with the volks 22mm animatic eyes. Those same eyes in the 07 don't touch, so it's very dependent on the sculpt of the head I imagine.

I haven't tried my bluerose eyes in the yet though, and they're all 22s.

My 06 girl looks similar inside her head with 24mm eyes in. I tend to prefer slightly smaller eyes in my DDs, because I like having some white showing. Generally I like the round iris styles in my boys and oval ones for my girls. I also prefer dark pupils.

I agree with what has been already said about Volks standard animetic eyes being good quality and a decent price, but not my personal first choice for my DDs.

I have one pair of Arietta eyes in 24mm, and they are gorgeous! Bright color and very detailed style. They are mostly white resin, with a tiny transparent sclera. The insert is very finely printed. Mine have a huge thick white part, but they still fit in my 06 head pretty easily. They're lower in profile than Volks 24mm. I definitely want more of these!! Price is about twice as expensive as Volks (in USD).

My 06 head in 24mm Arietta eyes. The sclera is 14mm across, and the iris is about 12mm across. Original style T-06 in blue.

totech06.jpg

Inside look at the Arietta eyes. You can see how one overlaps the other in the center.

Here she is wearing Totechi eyes. I'm afraid this info won't help much since Totechi eyes are not readily available for direct purchase, but it's good general information for people who want to know a little more about Totechi eyes.

mikimc09.jpg

They seem to be a white resin base with a translucent resin sclera. The sclera comes in two types, plain and pearlized/metallic. The iris is a printed color insert, and the print is very pixelated. The white part measures approx 20mm across, and the sclera measures about 15mm. The eyes I have are:

Left: plain sclera in purple, reddish brown and blue.

Right: pearlized sclera in aqua and red. Miki is wearing the violet blue (above).
