SeikoKitsune Posted February 14, 2015 I have an original character I'm desperate to make that is African-American. She wears very conservative clothing, so she could wear clothes that cover everything but her head, neck, and hands. I read that the joint pieces don't change color very effectively, so that's why I would only try to change the head, neck, and hands. Is this possible to do well though? I know on resin dolls you can "blush" the face to match the color you want, but I'm new to vinyl. Thanks! Yukamina Posted February 16, 2015 Kanu is really just tan, she doesn't look African American, just slightly darker than NS. OP could try dying the hands, head and bust piece ^^ Blushing would have a couple problems involved as far as I can imagine. First, the multiple layers of sealant could crack because vinyl is flexible unlike resin. Another thing is that vinyl stains easily, so unlike blushing resin, you aren't really preserving the original piece. The dark pastels will most likely stain, and you won't be able to 'undo' the project. My Etsy Shop ~~~ My DeviantArt
xhuxhurocket Posted February 16, 2015 Over on Den of Angels, in the customization sub forum, a member dyed a DD using some sort of automotive dye for vinyl- like what you'd use if you were restoring a car interior & needed a specific color. IIRC it was in a can like spray paint. I'll try to find that post, but the doll turned out really well. ETA they used Vinyl & fabric dye- brand V color or VHT Vinyl dye. You can use rit dye for the soft vinyl parts but the ABS hard plastic bits in the joints will not take that sort of dye, they would need to be painted to match & sealed really, really well. Paint around the joints rubs off quickly. I hope this helps!
SeikoKitsune Posted February 19, 2015 Wow, thanks everyone! Dying sounds pretty intimidating >_>;; This doll will actually be one of my next few, so I have a while to gather the courage, haha~ I'm glad to learn about the amount the difficulty and different options to change the skin. It's especially helpful to know that I'd have to dye her instead of being able to paint her like resin. You guys are awesome :3 The cast so far: Sky (DDS Mariko), "SK" (DDH-07 on DDS) Extra: LEN KAGAMINE
