Again I can't speak as a guitar player, but I will make an observation. They got good results with a traditional Japanese scale. Using it might require learning more traditional styles of Japanese music, and then putting some thought into it they might get interesting results. I've seen artists like Jolin Tsai do some really interesting things mixing pop, hip hop, and traditional Chinese music. The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin?
