jadepixel Posted February 25, 2015 Wow, she came out to be a really nice color in the end! So the joints didn't accept the dye much at all? What kind of dye did you use? I'm curious 'cause other folks had the opposite problem, I think they were using liquid Rit dye in that case. I'm planning to try this soon so I'm nosey jadepixel doll lab jadepixel eye shop
kaisuki Posted February 25, 2015 I do not have RIT so I went with Dylon Multi purpose dye. Do not use their fabric dye. You got to use the small satchet type . The ratio is 1 liter of hot water, 30grams of salt per sachet. Please avoid Havana brown, it will just be really bad grey outcome, go with coffee brown/dark brown instead. Your doll must not been treated with stain remover cream as it will show unevenly in the dye process. To achieve the colour I got, I had 2 liters of hot water , 60grams of salt , 1 sachet of coffee brown and 1 sachet of old gold. Always go by seconds, 3 sec dip, see first. Then go another 3 secs. My timing was roughly 15 secs per part. For her arm and hand joints, I didn't dye them as I saw inconsistency in the leg joints when I dyed the feet. Hence I will be sanding them first to see if they can take in some dye for round 2.
Yami Usagi Posted February 25, 2015 Oh my gosh! I was contemplating buying that same DD on Mandarake! I decided not to though because I wanted a DDS body ^^' Good to see that someone from the forums gave her a good home because she was a steal! Also, aside from some very pricey customs on YJA, I'd say this is my favorite dyed DD! The color you got is beautiful, and I look forward to seeing her with a faceup
kaisuki Posted February 25, 2015 Thank you. I wanted a dark tan skin Dollfie dream for some time. It was a leap of foolhardiness that got me to experiment on a second hand girl. I don't think I can bear to do on brand new girl without some trial and error. She is a personal project and I don't intend to do anymore dyeing for now as I am really happy with the results. I heard that only time will tell if her colour stays or not.
kaisuki Posted March 1, 2015 Update!!! After a few days, the doll has patchy marks on her lower body-primarily coming out. My conclusion- do not attempt to dye a pre owned doll if you do not know what the previous owner did on the doll. I used Winsor and Newton Brusher cleaner to remove her face up and the head still dyed evenly. I also washed her body thoroughly and dried before doing the dye. As the patchy marks look like smeared marks on her (I am thinking perhaps stain treatment/oxy cream was applied to her previously). The treated areas could have actually "absorbed up" the dye and went lighter. I will be spraying both her legs dark brown and will re-dye her head/torso and hands to match. She will be 2 shades darker.
Winterplane Posted April 15, 2015 Wow this is really awesome and doesn't seem super complicated! I was looking into doing something about my girls skin-tone because I got careless with a pair of black tights and it has been a nightmare and I feel really bad. I was thinking of going the air-brush route but I feel like I would have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and the dye way would be the best option for me to be 100% sure of full coverage. (I will have to use RIT Dye because its just more convenient and at a local store, I looked for this other brand) I just wanted to know a little bit more about what process you used. So you heated the water and dye on the stove first and then just put that in the bucket? Did you have to do any re-heating after the first run? Around what temperature did heat to (maybe it will say this on the packaging)? Can you show exactly how you tied the rope/string to the parts before dipping them? I am planning to do a light skin tone close to the NS but I wanted to add a tiny bit of a really really really light pink. I'm thinking I would have to do multiple rounds to make sure the color is solid enough. I want to avoid having to wipe off the face-up because right now I don't have all my tools and I just want the body to be fixed and hopefully matching the color will go well and I'll only have to re-do the head as last resort/ step if needed. I really like how you dobleepented the progress.
starobots Posted April 29, 2015 Oh wow that turned out so lovely!! I'm excited to see if you're able to dye the joints after you sand them. O: Tumblr

I really like how you dobleepented the progress. Sorry for the late reply. I removed the internal skeleton of the DD- only dye the shells of the doll. For any DD that has done stain removal- it is not recommended to do rit dye as the treated areas will take in dye differently. I use boiling water, a cup of salt and the dye. I did not do the dyeing in a stove pot as I worry I will cause the body to warp or shrink. I haven't got time to do her joints as I have been caught up with work. I got her back from the face up artist and will post pic of her taken at night. Mikuland Posted August 25, 2016 Is it okay if I bump this? I find it amazingly interesting and think everyone should see it. It's great that someone is actually willing to experiment on their dolls and get amazing results!!
