Crochet for DDs

Recommended Posts

If you could have an item crocheted for your DD what would it be?

I am looking for some ideas to try besides the ones rattling around in my head.

At my local bi-annual doll show there's a nice old lady who's made some crochet clothes for my dollfies. I only have photographs of a couple of them but maybe it will give you some ideas.

Most recently she sold me some for full size DDs but unfortunately no photos yet ~_~

I think this is a hard question to answer, because crochet clothes (except for hats and scarfs) often looks quite bad on both human and dolls alike.

So it would have to be the boring "hats and scarfs" for me.

While I am quite a sucker for hats for dolls, there are quite a few of those circling already. So maybe if you could make something unique, so to say.

But then again, now that I think about it, I have not seen as many crochet leg-warmers/boot-covers as knitted ones, so I wonder how they could look... Maybe that could be something?

This is a good question. I'm like Yumerio in that I think crochet looks best as accessories. Hats, scarves, and shawls are the best options there. Especially shawls. I knitted a dolly shawl once and gave it to a friend and she just loves it and I think they're a great accessory.

If I could crotchet I would make a hammock for my girls. I've seen pictures of cute kitties on lace crocheted hammocks and I want one! Otherwise I'm with the others that I see crotchet as accessory technique for hats, mittens and scarves, mostly because normal yarn is too thick and heavy for doll clothes.

All crochet things look depends on the scale. You can reach the needful scale using thin thread and a small size of hook. I know people who make fantastic clothing and you can not even say that clothing is crocheted))

If you want to make something unique, you should take your doll and imagine how it will be looking at it.

As for me - i do like crochet for many years, crocheting for my Azone pure neemo i use sewing thread and 0.5 size hook and clothing looks nice.

Hate - clothing made of thick thread with lots of holes, it is awful i think.

As for DD i definitely can say they need to have, for example, some skirts made of ribbon yarn, and no one even will be able to say it was crocheted

I know there was some dresses that I really liked that were in my knitting magazines, but I just cant do it (I can only knit) and I had taken some pictures out of a book for reference, but thats on my old dead phone. Ravelry is really good for getting ideas. I also really like the Vouge Knitting magazines because some of the other magazines I fell are too, oldish looking even if their current. Vouge also seems to be making a crochet magazine too.

Yumeiro mentioned leg warmers, I just recently learned to crochet and as soon as I saw that I knew I had a picture somewhere. The yarn that I used on this was a little thick and the I'm sure it would look better in a darker color but it's just what I had at home at the time to practice.Literally I just kept going until I had a good sized square and measured it so it was the right size to fit around the lower leg. On the back of them it was pretty easy to add buttons because of the "loose-ness" of the stitching and then I just fit the buttons through a space.

I think at the time of this picture I only had one of them done, I had a picture of the pair at some point but I think I lost them anyways

I have to agree with the above statement that making things for DD, the yarn/thread needs to be scaled as well as the hook. Otherwise no matter what you do it is going to look off. I really wish I had some examples for you but I'm pretty bad a crochet. I have some full sized things I've made, but it mostly consists of things I can crochet in a spiral. To my credit I have made 3 human-sized blankets & a coupe of doll sized blankets this way. I simply can't manage to crochet anything that requires turning and going back without the rectangular shape getting really wonky, even when I count my stitches! I really do a lot better a knitting.

I have an upcoming girl (later this year) who is going to be bad at crochet and doesn't realize it, but she is prolific at it. This is to help me feel like I can crochet stuff because I find it fun, easy, fast, and relaxing, but giving me something to do even though it isn't perfect. Her crochet is supposed to be ugly. Trust me, it makes sense with her character. I've also wondered if through doing this that I can finally learn how to crochet well. Even if I can't it is something I really like doing but often don't because it can tend to look sloppy. (To my credit, I have improved since I started in middle school about 20-ish years ago. I don't end up with balls of knots that are so tight that I can't even get the hook through! )

Have you tried working on scaled down Granny Squares? That would be a great place to try scaling down without a huge time or material investment. Plus if you make enough of them you could piece them together to make a quilt!

Other DD crochet ideas:

* Using doilies as DD shawls

* Rugs!

* Crochet poncho...

* Doilies for a Victorian style bedspread

* Use a crocheted pillowcase pattern to add crochet trim to DD clothes

* Flowers

* Choker that could be used for lace trim

* A necklace

* Snowflake

* Another snowflake or a tree(?)

* Baby Snowflakes

* Bookmark that could be used as trim (if you can figure out how to make it long enough for what you need)

* Another bookmark that would make some awesome trim if you only did half of it

* Crochet a snowflake on a rock (sounds like the absurd thing my girl would do. )

* Garter belt that could be used as trim

* Eyelet lace edging

* A crown!

* Flower appliques

* Cherry blossoms!

* Roses

Or you can just look at the free crochet search I did on Ravelry. I really love this site and it's where I got the knitting pattern for Dolly's acorn hat. He & Tamayuki even have their picture on the page!

If you think more about lace like crochet for DD instead of bulky yarn crochet, there really is a lot of options. I think I even remember seeing a pattern once for crochet fall leaves for a bookmark that could be adapted.
