Couple of questions

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just got my DD miku awhile ago and I am absolutely in love with it, the quality and the looks are a step ahead of Azone (which I am collecting) :o hmm I want to ask, is it cheaper to make your own girl from scratch (like buying body parts, wig, clothes individually) or buying a full set girl? (like how I did with my miku)

Oh, and for parts, could anyone recommend me some sites? I did read my previous thread for links and hoping to have more sites for my parts shopping :o and does Obitsu body fits on volks head?

this discussion happened not too long ago in another thread.

I'm going to say with no, if you are talking straight retail pricing, provided you win the lottery.

If you're talking secondhand or scalping market, then I would say it could be cheaper depending on what you want and who you need to go to in order to get what you want.

If you want one of the 9 blank heads, it's about 40-50$ for the head... then it needs a face... that can be anywhere from 20-400$ depending on who's doing it from who I've asked.

the base body is 300$

And now you're still got to get eyes... 20-30$

wig 30-60$

and outfit, underwear, socks, shoes etc. which again can be as little as under 100$ for everything or 500-600$ on a custom outfit.

I think on the amount I've spent on felicia's outfit alone, I could have preordered sheryl or ranka and they would've came with 1-2 outfits.

I've looked into full custom dolls with an anime/game character as the concept and those can be as pricy as an aftermarket Volks LE character. Wig and face aren't too bad, but custom clothing/jewelry based on an anime or game is expensive. That said if you have to have a Dollfie of your favorite game character that's probably your only route. In addition sometimes the best head for your character is from an LE doll, and that can set you back $300 - $600+ just for the head.

I have had good luck with some dolls after market. My Makoto was $800 with two outfits, which is pretty good for an after market price. If you don't mind used you can sometimes find some good deals on Mandarake or YJA. Staining might be an issue on a used doll though.

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

“Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction

It is much cheaper to build a doll from scratch. Some of my Dollfie Dreams were under $400 including head, body and faceup.

BUT it is more expensive to assemble a DDIII body from new parts than to buy a new assembled body.

I'd definitely say it's cheaper to assemble your own than it is to buy a limited even at retail, unless you are trying to build a specific anime character that you have to commission others to help you create. If you try to make a specific anime character with her specific outfit it can get pricey, especially if you are not crafty yourself. But I would say on average you can get a full doll plus outfit, wig, eyes for ~$400-$500 if you want to create the personality yourself.

Hmm I'm not making a character specific doll, just a doll of my own, where do I start?

First you have to decide what head you like. Do you prefer one of the standard heads 01-09? If so you could maybe get a full standard doll from Volks, like Yukino, Mayu, Miko, etc. Or you can get a blank head and either try your own faceup or send it to an artist. Then you could get a body from Volks if you see one in stock, or from here in the marketplace or a split.

But if you prefer only limited sculpts then you'd have to set aside money and put up a WTB thread so others can help you track that head down. This is a more expensive route, sjnce limited heads generally go for about $250 and up.

From there you can go to many third party websites to choose things like clothes, eyes, and wigs, but really choosing what head you want is the most important.

Thanks. It's a peach-pink Miruya twintail wig, but she wears it with only one pigtail.

I got mine from Dollfie World. They charge more but it's sometimes convenient to buy stuff a in one place. Here's Akira's flickr album. Akira
