Recommended Posts

So just got this on my Facebook feed. was not a April fools joke after all =/

what's everyone's opinions?

for me they still don't have all the other dolls out including there mechanical one and they are making this girl? money spinner of have they found it hard to make the 60cm mechanical doll work so upping size to make it easier? who knows XD

Quote form Danny choo's facebook.

To let you know that Smart Doll Plus was not an April Fools - Will start making molds ASAP http://bit.ly/1CdXllD

...Honestly, I'm so excited about this! The size isn't exactly my preference, but I like that she'll be able to walk around and do things. It'll almost be like having another person in the house. I'm concerned about how much she's going to cost, though.

her price will be high I expect. 150cm Obitsu is in to the $1-2000 new with nothing else so her price I would guess would be close to the $1K ish.

I did not look at any more of the info but I would think her waling would be limited if at all. I just get the image of the walking robots and how slow and clumpy they are. lets say I would like to see before I believe she can walk.

The doll itself is no april fools. But this was hilarious xD

"As some of you know, I also do work for the Japanese government and after networking with other ministries, I was specifically forbidden to sell this technology to any military body.

I do however believe strongly that humans have the right to defend themselves so I have programmed Smart Doll Plus to also be able to deal with burglars but deal with them in such a manner that they do not come to harm - I felt it was important to obey the 3 laws of robotics which are:-

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

In order to protect these laws, I have given Smart Doll tools that would only tickle a burglar such as pepper spray, 1000 volt stun guns and portable flame thrower."

Who doesn't want a flame thrower doll at home?

I'm skeptical. While a 120cm doll is definitely realistic, one that walks and carries things is not. That's just my opinion. Would love to see it happen though!

I don't know, maybe she'd be better off with an add-on armored pack with weapon hard points. This way, she can have a Gundam, Macross or other miscellaneous mecha series crossover! Everyone wins!

Personally I find big sizes like this fascinating but I'm not at all interested in an automated version, I'd rather have manual. The worry I'd have is that she'd be really hard to clothe. She's bigger than most other bjds, but not as big as the 150 Obitsu that can wear petite adult clothes. She'd maybe have to wear altered children's clothes.

I want!! I'm scared of how much she'd cost though, especially for shipping. I'm really curious to see how much she'll be able to do. I don't think there's much on the market for robots, and most of us are used to the idea that advanced robotics is not happening any time soon in terms of house hold robots and AI... maybe the tech is ready and Danny is someone who can bring it to us.

I'm also a little skeptical of the robotic capabilities, but it's still a fun concept.

You bring up a good point. Hopefully Danny will consider doing a custom line of clothing for her. Of course, it could also be an interesting challenge to sew for. Probably easier than 1/3 to 1/4 size clothes.

I'm sure he will... probably starting with the clothes available for 1/3 Mirai. The handy thing about this 120cm doll is that he can take everything already available and just scale it up, from the doll itself to the clothes. The patterns and fabric and workers are already there.

I want to know if it will cost as much as a car. If it isn't too expensive, it would be great to have one.

The normal Smart Dolls seem like good products but I have no idea what he's thinking let alone why he'd announce it this early. It may be because he can't get all the mechanical stuff he wants to inside the small doll. Either way, I really don't have a good feeling about this project. He seems to think that he can just put some motors in a doll and that it'll walk, but walking on two feet is actually pretty complicated and difficult. The foot needs to be articulated and you need fancy sensors and AI to keep upright and moving. The top robotics researchers in the world are still grappling with this problem so unless he has a PhD in robotics I don't know how he thinks he's going to accomplish this. All that on top of the issue of the proportions of a doll with their tiny feet and legs, not really suited to walking.

Getting robots to grab things is also difficult because object recognition is pretty complex as well. We take it for granted how we can look at something, know what shape it is and its location and grab it, but imagine having to explain to an alien how you do it step by step!

And the home security bit??? Oh wow . . . that's just a minefield right there. -_-

I mean it's great to try to push the envelope but I don't really see how this guy has any chance of building these things with the technology we currently have.

Methinks some people are going a bit far with this info...

Yes, he *might* actually be going forward with this sized doll and yes, he may actually make it automated in some way, shape or form. But we all know he's got a good sense of humor and likes to mess around so I'm willing to bet a good bit on the fact that half of what he's stated in his article is just for fun. Things like her walking around, getting the mail for you, cleaning the house and doing home security are all a huge stretch of the imagination but way fun to think about.

From what I gather, the 1/3 scaling of the Smartdolls is too small for the automation he wants so doing a doll this size makes things fit inside a whole lot more easily. He's talked many times about basically making the automated Mirai a smartphone setup with moving arms and head so doing that in the large size will make things easier to install and move while saving him money on miniaturization. So I would expect this larger setup to do what he originally intended with the 1/3 Mirai with some possible additions the larger sizing affords.

He's already said that he would scale up the default outfit that Mirai has now to fit this girl and that's pretty smart to start out with. Plus as someone earlier stated, making clothing at this scale is WAY easier to do than smaller ones. I'd think if this larger Mirai actually went into production that people would be making all sorts of awesome outfits for her.

And I think I saw a tweet from him that said different head molds could also be available with this doll so that would be pretty cool for customizers.

But pricing is what scares me most about this new version. With the size and scale, there's no way a regular manual version would be any less than $1000 USD. And forget an automated one.... that would easily hit $2000 or more. Seeing as how just the clothing and wigs etc for the 1/3 scale dolls are super expensive, anything larger will most likely have a larger pricetag too. Add into that the shipping costs for a huge box and the weight and you're talking some big money.

I like the idea of a large doll like this tho, it's exciting and different and cool. Whether or not it will come to be realized as a production model is yet to be seen but here's to hoping he can pull it off.

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

Haha maybe. I only started paying attention to him recently so I'm not too familiar with his sense of humor.

Having it talk and move its arms and head and have a simple AI like Siri would be possible. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be able to build it directly on the current skeleton though, the top half would have to be redesigned totally.

Either way these things are going to cost an arm and a leg. O_O*

I initially thought having an automated big girl would be really cool, but now I kind of just want the 60cm girl. If the big one only has the options he wanted for the small one, in addition to just clunky walking and grabbing, I don't think I would want one. It'd have to have a lot of mobility and cute interaction for me to want to take it around, as I'm not going to carry or handhold it everywhere. When I have a choice of something with the functions of my iPhone, but limited standing/walking ability, I'd rather have a small doll on my shoulder than a really big one. D: And, I really hope it doesn't come out looking too creepy at that size. I keep thinking of the Papermoon Chii. Kind of disappointing news too if he really did stop development on the 60cm Automatic Mirai.

And then there's the kind of creepy factor. One commenter said he'd definitely put an onahole in the bigger model. Yeah, I can see that being a really big selling point for many people, robotics or not. Maybe the robotics would make it more interesting, and I wonder how long it would be before you see third party add-on parts, mods, and reprogramming.

I feel like the field of robotics and computing has all just been humanity working towards its ultimate goal of realistic sex robots.

The big question here is... where would you find optional eyes and wig for this thing? @_@

Well, for wigs, small human or children sized wigs might just do it. As for eyes... Anime style I ust don't know. I went to grade school with a kid who had a glass eye, so I know realistic ones for that size exist, but that really would be approaching creepy territory. At least for me.

Would love to get my hands on an automated version of one. I think it would be really cool, however I doubt I will be able to afford one if it comes out. My most expensive doll is Saber Lily and I had to justify getting her at her aftermarket price to my husband, thankfully he loved her too. I don't think I can do that with this even if she was automated (unless I win the lottery of course).

yeah But it wouldn't surprise me if he sold a manual version too like he did with Mirai and Kizuna

If he sells a manual version he can use the money for R&D the Robotic version .
