Another method of preventing wig stains

Some wigs are too big for silicon caps and may still stain the doll’s head. Here’s an easy fix you can apply directly to the wig.

Supplies:

  • - Wig
    - New beige nylon toe cap
    - Hand-sewing needle
    - Beige or white thread
    - Scissors

Turn the wig inside out. Pull the nylon cap over the wig cap. The edge of the nylon cap should extend 3-4mm beyond the wig cap, and the nylon cap should be a little loose on top:

Use an overcast stitch to affix the nylon cap to the wig cap. This should pull the nylon edge around the edge of the wig cap:

When finished sewing, knot and clip the thread. Turn the wig right side out.

Brush the hair and put it on your doll. No more stains!

If you want to restore the wig to its former state, just clip the overcast stitching and remove the nylon cap.

I find toe covers in any department store or drug store that carries womens' tights/nylons. They are usually sold in packs of 2-10 pieces; you need the cheapest, thinnest ones for this project.

(These are little nylon pockets worn over the toes to prevent tears while wearing stockings and tights.)

Using normal tights could work too, but it is expensive and wasteful to cut the toes off of new tights to cover a doll's wig. If you used material from tights, you wold also have to finish the cut edges to prevent them from getting ladders when stretched. I recommend the toe covers because they are inexpensive and already the right size and shape for doll wig caps.

o Ao this is brilliant! I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for these the next time I am near a department store haha.

On the other hand-- if you used tights, you could make the other bits into clothes for your dolls, like make simple leggings or a tank top etc. ^^

I am going to hijack this thread a bit with another method of preventing wig stains.

"Sports tape", I think it is called... Either way it is a thin fabric-y type of tape.

Just tape it on the inside of the wigcap.

Here is an example:

I personally wouldn't use anything with adhesive on a wig. Adhesives always carry the risk of the glue migrating onto the wefts, which can ruin the wig.

Which is a good thing to note, if you are worried about the wig.

I have had tape on my girls wig for a year and there is no sign of any damage or glue migration. But it is probably smart to at least test your tape nonetheless.
