Feelings on only having one DD?

Recommended Posts

Pickle

Hi there! Just wanted to pop in for a second, and ask you guys your thoughts on only have one DD! Yes, I know many of you out there probably have more than one (including me) but what are your thoughts on people who only have one, and if you could only have one?

Reason I'm asking is because I'm most likely going to have to downsize my family to only have one DD for most of my life (obviously Miu; so much work and love thrown into her and she is the most understanding). The clothing costs, stain costs, etc are basically too expensive for me when having more than one gal and I don't want my other girls to sit around for months to years without getting more than just a wig or dress whereas if I had one girl, I could get her more within that time period. >///<

Have you ever had to part with most of your dolls to save money or to know that they would be better taken care of by someone else? Let me know and let me know about your feelings on the above questions! :3

Hope you and your girls/boys/DDs have a great day!

I sort of wish I could have only one DD or BJD, but I feel like it's too late now. I like to have characters for my dolls, and once I know who they are, I empathize too much with them and can't have a "cull" or major selloff. I did sell one of my DDs and it wasn't difficult, but it would be VERY hard for me to sell one of my resin dolls that I was heavily emotionally invested in. (I have several "fringe" dolls without indepth characters who I could sell without much grief.)

Of course, since I like the numbered sculpts, it's nice to know that my favorite DDs would always be available (I hope!) if I did decide to sell them. And it would be fun to spoil one DD girl... but I also like having my dolls interact with each other. The contrast between them makes it really fun for me. Even if I only had two! Just so I can have a yin and a yang.

I wanted just one. Now I have seven, with another in the works and then one more due in a few months. I don't really do much changing of them and stuff, as I make characters. If you are happy changing the one regularly, I don't see the issue with just having it. Would certainly save on space, and as you say, allows you to focus time on the one.

I haven't had to part with any of my girls, thankfully, BUT there was a year and a half between my first and my second, in large part due to budget reasons. I got to know her fairly well in that period.

I will say, I like that I've had a pretty big gap between girls--shortest gap was between Homura and Miku, about eight months I think? Gives me a chance to slowly acbleepulate things for them to wear and get to know their individual quirks. I'd probably feel totally overwhelmed and kind of guilty if I got two or more girls at once, or even within just a couple months of each other!

So basically, if you emotionally feel only attached to Miu, that's perfectly okay, and in that case, maybe it's time to find new homes for the others. On the other hand, never say never ever, especially in this hobby--just know that if your collection ever does expand again, it's totally cool to do it at a pace that works for you.

I see no problem with it if that's what works for them. I only own Miku right now but I also want a few others. I'd like it to be a large enough group for plenty of variety and potential for fun interactions, but at the same time I feel like it could get large enough to be too much to handle. My limit is probably around 10~15ish, but if someone can handle more than me by all means they should go ahead! I just feel like past that point it would be hard for me to stay as connected to them. I could be wrong though. I'll have to wait and see!

I've got only one doll so far and I'm perfectly happy with her. It's so much easier to find accessories when I have only one size to worry about. That's the beauty of these BJD's and the reason why they're so addictive. You can make 1 doll look like 20 different characters using different eyes, wigs, busts, clothes, and shoes. The only reason why I would buy another girl is for a different skin tone and head sculpt/face up and I'm definitely going to buy Danny Choo's male BJD once he releases something that's to my taste. My girl has to have a boyfriend to cuddle for pictures.

I can understand downsizing the doll family, but I think if you kept at least 2 dolls that have different skin tones and faces you won't be feeling the hurt so much. Sometimes going "cold turkey" freaks people out. (At least it would for me) Especially after I'd spent gobs of money and had to part with the fruits of my labor.

For now, I'm have a great time building my doll's wardrobe instead of using all my finances buying more dolls. Maybe this would work for you?

Good luck with your decision as it's a hard one I'm sure.

Even tho this will sound odd coming from me, I think owning only one DD would be perfectly fine.

Not everyone has the money or space or time for more than one girl so having just one lets you enjoy everything about the DD hobby without taking up too much space, money and time.

For a while there, I really never thought I'd own ONE girl, much less 34 of them. And even after I got Manami, I never thought I'd own another. She was ( and still is ) quite the handful! But after I had her for a few months, the thought of having a sister for her was too much so I had to get her one. After that it was all over for me and my wallet. LOL

But as I said before, there is absolutely nothing wrong with owning just a single DD or MDD girl. You can give her more time, attention and love than if you had multiples and you can save money to spoil her with clothes and accessories!

I have in the past sold dolls both because I desperately needed money for real life things and because I just didn't bond with them so I can explain my feelings for both scenarios.

The only doll I have ever regretted selling was my Escalayer and that sale has made me reconsider every other sale I have made. I regret it for a variety of reasons, first off she is really expensive and hard to come by so I cannot hope to replace her now, second, she established a personality that I really fell in love with and have not been able to recreate with any other doll of mine and I doubt that I ever will, lastly because of how I loved her I really should have known selling her would be a mistake but I let my practicality overrule my heart on that occasion.

My advice to anyone downsizing their collection is to consider every aspect of the doll before just considering the money. If you just don't want the doll anymore that's fine but if you feel like you might regret your decision for any reason at all, really think about it. Could you get what you need by selling off bodies, clothes, eyes, wigs? Could you sell everything but the head? I wish so much that I had not sold Escalayer's head >__<

I agree with Galatia. I now have four DDs (just got the body for the fourth today ^^). It would be nice to have just one DD and I can see the benefits of owning just one. It might be something that I'll consider in the future, but I'd feel bad selling my dolls.

They multiplied faster than I expected! I only wanted two DDs, and now I am on the verge of having nine.

You guys are making me glad I mostly controlled my intake rate. XD Still, I do feel Homura and Miku ended up a little too close together "age" wise, at about 8 months apart. (It was originally supposed to be more like 10-11 months' difference, but Homura got delayed by the manufacturer.) It's been hard to ensure both are decently clothed and played with. My older girls have more, I dunno, backlog I guess, so it doesn't feel so urgent for them anymore, even though they're no less loved.

Because of opportunities and cirbleepstances I may end up with 2 girls in quick succession. I think after I get them I'll settle down for a while and spoil them for a while. They're the only ones I feel a super desperate need to have anyways. That and as things stand right now I really wouldn't have room for more than 5 dolls as the only good spot for them is perched on top of my dresser. The only other solution would be to take over the guest bedroom but I like them being in an area I'll be around a lot.

So, for most of my dolly collecting life I only had one DD- no other dolls. I had two very briefly, and eventually sold the original girl to get some resin BJDs. I've always had a small doll family. I'm probably going to get another DD soon, so I'll only have the one.

I think people should do what makes them happy and what they can afford. (:

I had to sell off all my resins to move with my fiance(now husband). It was hard for me, but I was a revolving door with resins. I could never find one that made me completely happy. I took a hiatus for BJD's for a while, until I found Danny Choo's page and saw a MDD

I started with one(attained in a trade). I thought she'd be lonely, so I tried having two MDD's. But I found with the second one I was having the same bonding issues as I had with resins. I think part of it maybe guilt over having so much money tied up in an object, when I can't find a job.

So I'm happy with one. I get to spoil her and still be able to afford my other hobbies

I kinda feel you on the guilt thing. The stuff I get my dad technically buys for me. I'm keeping tabs on how much it all cost and I plan to repay him for it once I'm done with schooling and land a job. I don't think it's having a negative impact on me bonding with them though. If anything they're more precious because I see them as precious gifts.

I for one have found myself multiple times in a position where I'm at one girl. That's me right now, though I admit I'm seeking to have two in the end. Just two.

From my experience the more dolls I have the higher chance I will start to sell. I don't feel like I have the attention span for multiple dolls, and without the space to properly show them off I find myself in a strange bind where they'll start to feel...useless. I'll then part with them due to that, or due to my desire to seek another. I won't lie, I bore easily as well.

Personally, I say it is nice to keep reduced numbers. You can explore, focus, and spend more time with them. Is easier, and cheaper to shop for. Fits better within my income range, and I just like it. XD My two first friends within the hobby have acbleepulated more than 100 dolls and personally I feel like it is quite the waste as the majority doesn't even get touched after being dressed, and customized.

I know myself than 1 is not enough, I wish I could be fine with just one since I really don't have the means to keep a hobby as expensive as this one. I'm also a BJD collector (that one is extremely expensive!!) but they are easy to take care of. Hearing all this talk about how hard it is to take care of DDs is making me a bit anxious (I'm waiting for my first DD) but I will try to be very careful.

I always wash the dark clothes before putting them on my dolls and I use gloves to touch them (a bit extreme but when you spend a huge amount of money on them you gotta be careful!). On top of it, I also collect isul and azone dolls and I don't have just one of each lol I love all kinds of dolls and they make me happy. My DD doll will need a companion *winks*

I do really admire those who are satisfied with just one doll though...

I had one for quiet a long time, but I felt like she got lonely ;^; But that may have just been her character? I don't know. Maybe if I had a doll whose character was more of a lone wolf I could have just one doll but I doubt that'll ever happen. My magic number has always been 3 so I'll probably always have at least 3.

I've always envied DDs but never bought one because they were far too expensive for me and my wallet. When DD Miku got re-released on the VOLKS USA website, I split the cost of her and had half of her paid for me as an early birthday gift. That's really the only reason I was able to get my hands on her. So as of now, I'm probably only going to have one DD for a long, long time.

I do have two other resin girls, though, and it can honestly be really frustrating having more than one doll. I often get frustrated RIGHT after I receive a new doll, because I stress about having it look great while having my other doll(s) look great at the same time, and when clothing or wigs don't cooperate after what seems like ages of trying to constantly adjust them, I just get angsty and a little ticked off.

Having one doll really doesn't seem too bad at all. It must be a lot more fun only having to worry and take care of one, as opposed to more.

However, I really do love all my dolls. I wouldn't give them away for the world. But I will be taking a break in regards to buying any more dolls, for a long, long while.

Nothing wrong with having only one girl to spoil! I've been feeling a bit guilty about not doing more with my dolls, both resin and DD. One of my DD is just a floating head, and has been for almost a year! But the wonderful thing about dolls is you can pack them away for a while and they'll be ready for you whenever you are ready for them. I think if I had to sell off some dolls I'd try to sell the bodies and accessories and keep the heads if I could. Especially my custom girls- they are my own characters and could never be replaced.

I actually admire people who are able to maintain big collections because I always end up feeling overwhelmed and selling all but one of my dolls...>_> As of now, I'm not sure whether I'll end up with several or just one (well, technically two...I have a tiny resin girl and a DD). I'm sort of trying to pace myself. Having a bunch of unfinished dolls laying around is no fun!
