Wigs that stain

We already have this thread for outfits but I thought it couldn't hurt to do this for wigs as well.

 

Most of you already know that the wigs from Volks Dollfie Dreams tend to stain, but you should be extra careful with Uzukis Wig^^"

 

My girls wear silicon wig caps all the time and I check them a lot if I get a new wig, but this one stained my Uzuki in a short time (really bad). *But it looks so good on her TT__TT*

 

Its currently really warm here in Germany so the weather could be a reason (or that I didn't have a second fabric wig cap)

 

Unfortunatley this is one of the wigs thats difficult to wash (and easily ruined in the process) so if you have it: be careful with it! >__<"

Off the top of my head ( ZING!! ) I know of two default Volks wigs I have that stain like crazy....

 

Ryomou's blue wig and Kanu's purple wig. Both are BAD stainers and I have to use a silicone cap AND a cloth cap over that to keep down on the staining.

 

Also, I just remembered that the optional long reddish/orange wig for Natsuki stains too. Not as quickly as the ones I listed above but over a few months without a cap, it'll stain. I mean this wig:

Natsuki 2nd's default wig stained the MSC of a custom faceup for me. The actual fibers that is. Funnily enough the cap never stained.

Anything from Volks in 'Natural Black' will stain pretty badly under the cap, because the caps are black. My Kotone wears one and although she has a very thick cloth wig cap it still stains around the edges where there's more pressure.

Yup, a Volks wig with a black cap will stain. Classic Majesty black wig caps will also stain badly.

 

I don't mind stains on heads as long as it is where it won't be seen. I've never had actual fibers stain, though I have had fibers scratch the MSC on the face where the bangs/fringe brush against the face.

Chihaya's wig causes some very bad stains. I don't own her, but I remember seeing posts mentioning that her wig turned multiple bowls of water blue when rinsed.

Volks any wigs in "Classic Gold" (its a light brown color) stain like a mofo

 

Mari has a stain ring around her head... at least the wig itself hides it

Purple Plum wigs, from Anime Stuff Store, stain like crazy! I bought a dark pink one and it stained around my dolls headcap, as well as around her face, jaw line, and shoulders where the fibers touched the vinyl.

Oh, I totally forgot about Yoko's default red wig.... that thing is terrible!

I read on the forum that mohair wigs can stain easily, but what about fake-fur wigs? I'm thinking a bright yellow-blonde color.

Dangit, by the sound of it, I'm gonna guess that the new standard Mirai's default wig stains since it's in Volks Natural...I just ordered her, and she'll be my first DD, but since Volks USA was out of stock of wig caps, I didn't get one yet and decided to just risk putting it on her without one.

I have no idea as to if Mirai's wig stains, but if it helps at all on your wig cap situation, Jadepixel has a nice pattern and directions on sewing together your own wig caps.

No problem! I believe there are also more patterns there for stuff like shirts, socks, etc.

finding the leeke black wig cap is leeching a bit of color onto felicia's 07. It's not so much an obvious stain as it is a darkened ring around her head. I've been keeping my eye on it and it hasn't progressed. It's possible the wig oil spray is making color come off the thread if there's any cotton content.

I made a wig cap for my Mirai and used it at first, but then I decided to see if it actually did stain and took off the wig cap (probably a foolish decision, but to be fair my house is kept cool and the wig seemed loose around her head anyways, so that practically eliminates two factors of potential staining), and believe it or not, even though it was in Volks natural and that's known for staining, I've left the wig on her for a few weeks straight and nothing has happened. Her head is completely clean, not even a faint stain.

I'm not positive that will apply to each doll with this wig since vinyl batch, material and dyes, etc. can play a part in that as well and maybe my doll's just resilient to staining for some weird reason, but I just thought I'd post this anyways since to me it's pretty interesting that a black wig for some reason didn't stain my doll even though this exact color is known to stain at times.

About alice kuonji's wig is it the fiber or the cap that stains?

Hmm... Does the "tomboy" brown bob wig from Volks stain? I hope not. It's for my future custom.

Does anyone know is Yaya's wig stain? I'm guessing yes as it's a Volks black wig.

The fibers not staining is usually the norm, with exceptions usually being mohair wigs (because dyed) and to my knowledge a few older Volks wigs.

Brands that in my experience are stain safe (both for hair fibers and wig cap) even for dark wigs are Dollce, Cotin Doll, Himekazura, Ronshuka Couture and Smart Doll (apart from their mohair wigs - see above). However I'm quite sure there's plenty of other wig makers that you could further add to this list - I just don't have any experience with them.
