Stupid Questions But I want to hear your opinion

If you have a character doll, (such as a smart doll Marai) do you think it is okay to change the way she looks and change her name to become your character?Sorry if this is dumb, I'm a newb. ^_^ Thank you~!

It's absolutely ok! I think the majority (for DDs) have changed their character dolls into their own characters. Some have even turned theirs into different character dolls that haven't been made yet. This goes for Smart Dolls and any kind of doll.

Although with Smart Dolls, I think I've seen most of them stay as Mirai and Kizuna.

All of my dolls have, and will continue, to become original characters. You can do whatever you want with your dolls, including making them whoever you want them to be! That's what makes this hobby so fun; it's great to see how different everyone makes their dolls.

There's nothing wrong with keeping the original character either. The sky (and wallet) is the limit in this hobby.

It's absolutely ok! I think it's what most of us do actually. The only character doll I have sort of kept in Character is Melty, because I just love her how she is, but I still redress her how I want so she's not strictly in character.

Everyone else I have who was a character model, I have turned them into something completely different.

First off, welcome to the DD hobby!

Secondly, that's not a stupid question at all! It's something most people I know in the hobby have asked.

I think it is completely acceptable to change up any default character to fit what an owner wants their girl to be. These girls are designed to be changed around and to be whatever we want them to be. Sure, most people who are after certain characters like Rin Tousaka or Saber or Miku want to keep them that way because they love that character as she is. But if you see something else in a Mikus face that works better for what you have in mind to make her "your" girl then by all means change up her wig and eyes or her body type or even her faceup.

This hobby is all about having fun and owning pretty girls who YOU love. I say change up that Yoko or Rei and make her your own special and beautiful girl!

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

To date, I have made all of my girls from scratch. I have my first "character girl" due soon (Sheryl) who I will also be making somebody else. Oh, and I have a Miku head and a Youmu head on other bodies as other characters. I liked their looks. Different eyes/wigs etc of course, but the faceups are original.

So as far as I'm concerned, go for it. Make whatever you want out of them. Some people even go so far as to make boys. I think that is too far, but whatever floats your boat, really. ^^

Yup, that's definitely a thing. It's your doll, you can do what you like with her!

So far my character dolls have stayed as their characters, but they have admittedly evolved a bit into *my* distinct interpretations of them. Some of this is in large part my own mental image: for instance even before the DD came out I've always pictured Miku as a somewhat rebellious android, and her android nature is a big part of what dictates both her persona and her fashion sense. Some of it is sort of evolution based on how they interact with each other, such as how Nanoha has become increasingly put-upon and prone to facepalming after dealing with Agatha for so long.

However, I'm not adverse at all to converting an official character doll into an original or more obscure character in the future. I'd love to make my OC Emryana at some point, but haven't yet decided who the best "bait" model is. (I've considered Kos-Mos, Alna, and Sheryl so far.) Also, if I end up liking Smart Doll Eiji, getting converted into someone else is certainly his fate!

So don't worry, you're in good company here.

Thank you all ( ^∇^) I was more focusing on Smart doll to be honest but thank you for all the feedback. I'm trying to decide to get dollfie dream or a smart doll ^_^. So this feedback helps me choose also. ^_^ sorry english is not my first language

Many years ago, when I first came online, I visited a forum dedicated to console RPGs. One of the things I was shocked to discover there was the idea of renaming characters in RPGs like Final Fantasy 7 was taboo. There was a long thread about how anyone who renamed the characters was insulting the designers and playing the game wrong.

I promptly exited that group. My FF7 characters were named after various PCs and NPCs in a tabletop RPG I played. The renamings I made were uncannily apt, and made me enjoy the story of FF7 all the more.

It's your doll. If naming your doll something makes you happy and increases your enjoyment, then go for it. My DD Candy is named Amber. I'm right there with you.

A bit OT here but my bf nearly peed his pants when I told him what I renamed my FFVII characters. Cloud was Leah (my name), Barett was MachoTwitt (I was 15, ok!), Tifa was Babe etc. Why would they let you rename them if they didn't want you to? Aaaaanyway I swear I have a point...

If doll companies did not want us to customise and make the doll your own then they would glue the wig on and sew the clothing shut, not leave the headcap removable etc etc.

Some dolls I have left as default, like Miku because I just wanted a Miku hanging about the place, but with most dolls I don't even bother opening the default clothing because I have my own style and that's what I like.

The good thing about these dolls is customization. You are free to do whatever you want with the doll, whether you keep the character look or not, it's up to you. In my case, I never keep character dolls, I never buy fullset dolls because I know I will never use the fullset wig/eyes/clothes and even face up. As for personality goes, I also create a whole new personality for the doll. Either way is fine though, whatever makes you happy ^_^

I was talking about this with a friend the other day. We were saying that too many of the Mirai's around seem to not have had their hair or eyes changed or even names. I have renamed mine and changed her wig. I do find it sometimes hard to think of her as not being Mirai though just because someone may not know what I'm talking about if I say the name I gave her lol. I think it really comes down to personal preference of course!

It's not a stupid question. I wondered the same thing when I first started looking at Dollfie Dreams. Many of them come in such elaborate fullsets, it makes me feel a bit guilty to discard all that for my own character.

I think Smart Dolls especially were made to be a basic concept you could build on. Sure, Mirai and Kizuna are Danny Choo's characters, but he still designed them to become whatever you wanted them to be. In fact, I'm sure the folks at Smart Doll would love to see original interpretations of their dolls.

I'd definitely change the 'default' character into my own. I research the dolls character and maybe keep a few traits but most likely make her my own. There are so many things to make dollfie dreams into that I don't want to put them in a box

Like everyone said, changing their names or looks into something else is perfectly fine. The beauty of this hobby is that each doll is customizable and half the time they come with "their own attitude' and their own personalities screaming to get out. You'll see that a lot and that is perefectly fine. So yeah, let your girl show her own personality. We would love to get to know her.

Renaming them FF Characters... sacrilege... NOT! Lol. I kinda found it funny that even though I'm an FF fan myself that I will probably be banned from that group because I rename my lead character all the time.

Love the MachoTwitt name change.

All of my Kiddos are original characters!

I'll be looking into getting at least two more in the near future, tanned Chitose Smart Doll (Yes! TWO!! Hopefully after tax-time, and the Belfry being paid off and in a park somewhere.

Yes, I will be making the both of them Original characters too...

If you have ideas for your own kiddos, by all means, have a blast! That's what all those extra eyes and wigs

are for!

From someone who tends to find keeping dolls in their original fullset pretty boring, I can only say go for it ! A huge part of the fun is to make your doll reflect your ideas and tastes^^

I will always customize my dolls, but I get where OP is coming from. I have that issue when thinking about purchasing licensed DDs. I may love their head sculpts, but some part of me feels bad for tearing apart the original creator's idea! Haha I just like customizing things!

In any case, it hasn't and it won't stop me, and I don't think it should anyone else. Have fun with them! It's a creative hobby!

So far I've always customized any dolls I get, even if they're not a specific character and are just sold as a pre-styled fullset.

Sometimes it takes a while, like it did with my Smart Doll Ebony, but I feel more comfortable with my dolls being a character of my own making since then I don't feel like I'm doing something 'wrong' when I'm styling them - I always get hung up on character dolls when I change outfits or something because I'm thinking 'Would the character actually style their hair like that? Is it out of character for them to wear this?', and then it spoils my enjoyment of the doll. I know it doesn't really matter how I dress them, but I'm a little obsessive

Although I don't know how it will work if I get Megurine Luka when she's released, since her style can be pretty much anything. She may stay as Luka or she may not, I'll have to wait and see.

Just an update that this line is no longer true. I got a DDB Kirito specifically to turn him into someone else: Yuuri Katsuki from Yuri!!! On Ice. He's still a work in progress, but I have no regrets basically attacking the Kirito head with acetone and sandpaper to transform him.

I think you can make your doll anything you want it to be. I have a Smart Doll Eiji who I've had for a while but I have plans to turn him into another character. On the other hand, I hope to get a Miku just because I like the character.

So pretty much do what makes you happy.

I know a lot of people have gave their advice, but thought I'd give mine too.

It's completely okay! I've done it with my BJDs, and a lot of others do as well, as someone who's been in the BJD hobby before the DD hobby (even though I only got a BJD this year), everyone I've known in the BJD hobby do change the character.

I personally like it better to change the character and stuff, I change all dolls I've had characters (mostly when I was little with barbies and monster highs) so, I think it's completely okay.

I actually think the creators expect people to change the character, Volks even encourages you to "make it more of your own".
