You love her but you don't get her

Just a topic I've been thinking about a lot recently haha.

There are a few DD girls out there that I find no special reason why I love, I just do. From time do time I have pondered about ordering them but it just never happens. One of these dolls is Hirasawa Yui, it's something about her smile and eyes that gets me, I think it's cause she's so different from everyone else of my dolls, but I....just....never see myself ever getting her, no matter how much I love her.

 

Same goes with Nia, who I have reasons to love since I'm a big fan of her character to begin with. I'm just so scared of her skincolour since I've heard so many negative things about her. D:

 

How about you guys, do you have any dolls that you adore but just....never find yourself buying? Or are there any dolls that you thought you would NEVER get but ended up with anyway?

I think the two girls I adore but I can really never see myself getting are Sasara and Mashiro. They're both beautiful and very special in that they sort of introduced me to the hobby, and I love every single owner picture of them, they just don't feel like they would ever "fit" with me.

 

An honorable mention for the one I never thought I would get but did is my 01 head, mostly because I never really thought I would try for a custom and because limiteds tend to capture my heart when I least like them to.

There's three girls I really want from old releases, but I simply can't due to aftermarket prices being too expensive, which in turn adds another huge cost with customs/duty/tax.

 

Even if I snagged one for 120k yen or something on YJA, it'd be around $2k landed, which is just far too expensive. If I made a friend in the US I could trust with such money to act as a proxy to underdeclare for me, I'd consider it, but as is I simply consider them unobtainable.

I LOVE Mai Shiranui! Her facial expression is great. But the right time and the money have not come around yet. I really like Beatrice too, who was at the top of my "want" list until I found Saber.

 

Edit: I also really love KOS MOS and all her gear, but I don't think that will ever happen. Mai Shiranui is at least a possibility, because I won't die if I don't have her fullset, I could just buy her head.

 

I never thought I would get an 05 head, I thought it was my least favorite. Now I have TWO! AND Alna is unexpectedly creeping up my wishlist! NEVER saw that coming!!

Sakuno. She was one of the first DD to grab my attention, but she is out of my price range.

I also like Mai Shiranui and there is one I've been eyeing, but now is not a good time to buy her. I have to make sure I save enough to pay for Ranka and - if I win the lottery, Alisa too.

So many really T-T Probably around 1/3 of the releases from the past few years. Some of them I don't buy because they have a similar vibe to girls I already own (like all the sweet smiling ones), or because they are too expensive and hard to find (Like Aoko or Manaka). And of course, because these dolls are expensive, I can't buy them willy nilly and have 30+ I have to narrow it down to must haves... Right now I have 8 DDs and 8 resin dolls. It's a lot for me to maintain and display already ^^; So I don't want to own too many. So there are many lovely girls I won't buy.

Xenosaga Momo and Macross Ranka Lee fit into this category for me.

 

Momo is probably the first Dollfie Dream I really fell in love with. She has a very pretty face. Her Xenosaga III outfit is very neat and translates to a doll surprisingly well. Seeing pictures of her online has shown me she has a very versatile look. I like how perky and peppy she looks.

 

The aftermarket prices for Momo are at the very edge of what I'd currently consider paying, so she is technically within the range of consideration. I don't know, I just can't convince myself to go for it.

 

I think part of the problem is something unrelated. Years ago, I had the chance to buy a Master Replicas U.S.S. Enterprise, but I balked at the price. Years later, I regret that, and feel I should have gone ahead and purchased it. Momo is about the same price range as that starship, so part of me says, "You didn't buy the Enterprise at that price, and you love the Enterprise. Why should you pay that much for a doll of a character who doesn't have that much personal value to you?" So, yeah, mental block.

 

Ranka Lee is the other one. I could have gone into the pre-order for her, but I didn't. Like Momo, her face is very cute. Despite having bought a DD with a L bust as my first one, I actually prefer the smaller bust sizes as they seem much more reasonable to me, so Ranka had a nice figure to my perception. Plus, her Sayonara no Tsubasa concert outfit is just awesome. I checked that pre-order campaign multiple times. I pondered and pondered. Ultimately, I didn't order her.

 

Part of the problem was the delay between order and shipment. Things have been far too interesting for me the past couple of years (in the Chinese proverb sense), so I wasn't sure if I could commit to something so far in advance. Plus, I wanted my doll NOW! Ultimately, I waited too long and the pre-order period ended.

 

I don't know. I'm still tempted to try and get Ranka. It depends on how expensive she is in aftermarket and how my finances are at that point in time.

For me, a lot of the mellower-looking girls fall into this list. Mikuru comes first to mind, as well as Mariko. They're adorable, I would have so much fun dressing them, but it's hard to click personality-wise because I know they would absolutely not survive with my strong-willed lunatics. Sure, Nanoha would *try* to protect such a girl, but even she can't manage it 24/7.

For me, this is probably KOS-MOS from zenosaga and the Sabers, and Illya, and Yuki Nagato. I love the way they look and have no clue about the series they're from for the most part, but I think I'm set on dolls for a while, plus as long as I live in my current place I could probably only have 5 for display. Any others I get would have to be stored away and I'd feel bad doing that. It's like how as a kid you want to cuddle all your stuffed animals while you sleep so none of them feel left out! lol.

Oh mine for sure is Saber Alter without a doubt. I wanted her since her first release. As a bit of back story, at the end of 2008, my fiancé, Danny said that in the new year, he would like to buy me a new doll. I had my eye on entering the Volks after event lottery for Saber Alter so this was the most perfect timing. When the lottery opened I told Danny how much Saber Alter would be and asked if I could enter. He said that he couldn't quite afford it after all so in the end I missed the lottery period. It closed and I accepted the fact that there would be no Saber Alter for me.

 

On the 11th January, Danny decides to give me the go ahead to buy her because he could afford it after all! But of course the lottery was closed now and we were already seeing her high asking price on the after market so I sulked and thought that I'd never be able to get her, unless I saw her head sold separately, which I never saw.

 

I always admired other peoples pictures of her and never quite got over the fact that I missed out. Volks of course released her again but at this point I was out of the hobby so I had no idea of it, when I did know of it, there was no time or money in which to get her with, so once again I missed out and had to watch her value soar.

 

After all of that, I did eventually manage to get a Saber Alter head and eyes, but all of my plans for her fell apart. I commissioned her outfit, had to wait nearly half a year with a flakey seamstress for it to be done, when it finally was done, it got lost in the post and never showed up and I lost half of the money I'd paid for it! Then when trying to buy a body for her, I got messed around by sellers TWICE and ended up with nothing. I tried moving past these things, in addition to the near misses with her releases originally but in the end it just felt like the whole project was doomed to fail and I got so frustrated I locked her head away in a drawer for ages. In the end I just sold it.

 

I still love Saber Alter, I pretty much adore every single picture I see of her, but somehow I just feel like we weren't meant to be so I will just keep loving her from afar. I won't try to buy her again

I have nothing to add to the discussion because I'm 100% a newbie when it comes to DDs, so I don't know that much about them and their molds. However, I'm in love with that doll you have on your signature (the one in the middle) may I know who is he/she?

There's always going to be more wants than you have cash. That's the nature of things... For me there's probably 3 or 4 out there right now I want, and many more in the future... but I have to draw the line at some point. My goal was to build 2 characters, possibly 3, so I have 2, 1 on order and a bunch of parts... of which I will probably draw the line at for the happiness of my bank account. lol.

There are a few girls I really love, but aren't a good fit for my family. Sasara is one of them, though at one time I thought she might be a doll I'd like to have. Ultimately the way my family is going, she wouldn't be a good fit. It's interesting the way my tastes evolved.

 

For the longest time I didn't want Mariko at all, then she slowly moved in to this territory for me, and now I'm going to go for her in the lottery. The right version came along for me, haha. I'm really picky when it comes to dolls I actually buy.

I think most of the limiteds I admire, I will probably never get. Maybe one of them at the most, but I just feel like I shouldn't overindulge since I have other hobbies...I tend to be a revolving door collector for this reason. I just can't justify having so many expensive things, though secretly I wish I could have a big collection.

 

The biggest two for me are Sakuno Uryu and Sasara. I love their faces, but I can't see myself owning them. Maybe Sakuno if I got lucky, but not Sasara. I'm content just looking at other people's pictures of her.

Fell hard for those girls but those girls just for some reason I can't bring them home. I love to stare at them from outside the glass so to speak. I have lots of resin dolls where I'm gabby hands about but could never actually get them and bring them home.

My reason is kinda sad actually, I always wanted my second BJD to be a male doll so he could keep my girl in company. There's no such thing as male DD and I wouldn't possibly get a resin male for her (planning to get one but he'll definitely not going to be together with my DD).

 

Seeing Juu-yuki's amazing Kirito's custom makes me want to have my own Saber Lily head. No kidding. I want that expensive head just to make a man out of it. e-e; But yeah, I couldn't own one due to the price, currently. Never say never, I could save up for the head but I've decided there's still many manly DD sculpt left undiscovered. Juu-yuki discovered and experimented herself a Saber Lily and she turned out to be a handsome boy! So I thank and congratulate her. I'll keep an eye on other DD heads.

Forever and always my holy grail is Mashiro Mito and her full set. I got into the hobby juuusssttttt after she was released and didn't know about her yet. Since then I have pined after her. Unfortunately, finances to get her don't add up yet. Since I'm still a student, it probably will be for many more years before I get to get her. Also, I aimed to get Arle, but lost her lottery. Considering how cute she is and how her prices are going up, I also will be pining after her....

I've also seen people use that head for making their own Saber Lily because they have a lot of similarity in the facial structure. It's a more mature head, so it can pass for male with the right faceup. I find it makes a nice alternative since a real Saber is so expensive.

 

(When it comes to limited heads and experimenting though...I don't know why, but I've always thought Neris or Aoko could make interesting males depending on the characters they'd be made into.)

Ahh! DDH07 of course! I've done some doodle few months ago. It'd look stunning as a male. I have this idea of using smaller eyes for male. The make up should be minimum.

 

I've never considered DDH07 as an alternative to Saber Lily, your post helped me thank you.
