WARNING : MSC not working properly anymore?

Today i stumbled upon a couple of faceupper on Facebook (one is Sorenka which also does DD faceups) declaring they have to stop their shops /are searching for sealing alternatives because it seems MSC flat/matte changed formula from a couple of years (later 2013) and this new composition makes faceup crack pretty fast .

MSC creators itself admitted, contacted by faceuppers, they changed formula recently. What actually is unknown is if this composition change includes the UV-CUT version which many of us use in the community (actually me and Pharaviel are not experiencing any crack in our girls, even the ones which hit 1 year and more of age from when the faceup was finished, for example).

This is the original announcement:

Important Announcement

I decided to stop making customs because Mr.Super Clear is no longer reliable.

A while ago Mr.Hobby changed the famous MSC from "FLAT" to "MATT" but they didn't only change the labeling, they also changed the formula.

All the dolls I made with the old MSC FLAT remains perfect even after 6 years but the dolls I made with the new MSC MATT starts to crack after a while.

This can take 3 months or a year but the cracks starts to appear. Sometimes they are evident and sometimes you have to watch carefully under a direct light to see them but they are or will be there.

This is happening to a lot of awesome custom artists in the Pullip, Blythe and Bjd communities (and more each day) so I decided to talk to Mr.Hobby about this and they have confirmed to me the obvious: They changed the formula and it can't be used the same as before.

I'm looking for alternatives and making tests to other sealers but this can take a while...

When I find a sealer that works for me I will start making new dolls and remaking the ones that cracked.

If anyone knows about good alternatives to MSC that works and last in plastic I'd appreciate the info.

I'd also like to take the opportunity to ask, especially customizers, that you get in touch with Mr.Hobby (you can change the language from japanese to english in their web and there is a form contact) about this. Personally I think it's a budgetary issue and they won't change it, but if they receive many complaints we may have a chance.

Finally I would like to thank my awesome customers and followers for their encouragement and support, specially now. THANK YOU

What do you guys think?

Personally i'll keep an eye on my girls to check if something strange happens, still this issue is a big problem for our girls since there are just a few alternatives to MSC for sealing safely vynil...

for me in the UK I am not worried at all. we cant get MSC since we cant ship it into the uk at all (with it being flammable)

but I have head no one is being to worried about it since its only just changed a few months ago so they have not had enough time to test it in the real time. they have pointed out that the person may of used it wrong them selves so it may just be there own problem with not using it. along with them saying it will only last a year but the new formula has not been for retail long enough to confirm that.

The girl reporting that says it seems the formula changed from late 2013 , when the cans changed name from flat to matte and all girls done from that moment are cracking one after the other, so i dunno.. Personally i use uv cut only and i'm in the hobby from just a year and half, i can get MSC from a local store in italy and if i had to change to use another sealant it would be more difficult to obtain since many international sellers don't ship in Italy or they do but only with couriers :s

I just looked it up and I wasn't finding much on this.

It looks like some people are wondering if the Matt needs more time to cure. Like maybe up to about a half hour. Others are wondering if it's being used in too high of a humidity so it's not adhering properly.

I noticed this happening to my first doll customs, and found out a solution to the problem that's worked for me so far. I'm unsure how the others are spraying their dolls, but it was an issue with environment in my case; I used to spray outdoors before investing in a respirator. Now I spray in the garage with the doors closed, and that stopped the issue of finding cracks in my dolls' faceups. It seemed like the wind caused it to be uneven, and over time it separated or something of the sort. Hope this helps some of you ^^

Out of curiosity how much old were those customs' faceups? I spray outdoor in a partially covered area because i live in a small flat with 3 cats and a hamster and i don't have a closed room to use, but i refuse to give msc when it's windy, so far with msc uv cut (and i don't give many layers honestly) i had no prob but my oldest custom is only 14 months old

I just stopped by my local hobby shop, and they now stock only the new Matt cans. When I've got a chance I'll give it a try on a less precious/test faceup and report how it responds. I just did a faceup with the old stuff and noticed some tiny cracks around the eye already, so I'm not sure it's necessarily a new formula problem.

Clockwork-angel has shown on her personal facebook that the problem is the artist. She contacted the makers of MSC and they admitted that the formula has changed BUT the problem they see is people not giving it enough time to dry. they recomend that all products on the face must be fully dry before the sealant is used then when using the sealant it must be thinly used and given close to a hour before working with it or a new layer added.

The sealant works by the layer shrinking while drying so if you use any more before the first layer is dry and if you use more then 4 layers then the cracking is most likely to happen.

Thanks for that info Error-chan!

None of my face-ups have cracking on them and some of them are over 2 years old. That includes both resin and vinyl face-ups. My area is pretty dry, so that might help.

About a year and a half is when it started happening to the first, and one of them was within only 7 months. It was a rather windy day, and I live in a very humid place so that may be the reason spraying outside wasn't beneficial for my dolls. I only spray 2 layers, personally as well. If after 14 months you haven't seen any cracks, I'd assume your dolls should be fine, though. But, I'm no expert, that's only from my experience.
