There haven't been any, as Volks has previously stated a while back they had no plans on making any, if memory serves from what I've heard... But apparently now they've changed their minds for some reason, so this is a first.

Nope, not even character males. It will be for sure, although I'm not really sure on what to think of it... Guess only time will tell.

 

I can somewhat imagine one, although it's a very hazy image in my head. Hopefully it does, although I'm also curious on how they're gonna sell them off. :>

I've been in the hobby for 3 1/2+ years and my first DD was an MDD 'boy'. Tamayuki started out with an MDD S bust that I sanded down to have the closest thing to looking like a boy as I could and hiding the remainder of the girl boobs under loose tshirts. Around 6-7 months after I got him Obitsu came out with a 45cm boy body with a male sculpted chest that works on the MDD body. Few years later I ended up with Lucas' DDS 'boy' body by putting a larger Obitsu male torso on the DDS frame with some modifications and the discontinued 'macho' bust. It doesn't look too bad but the buff chest with the wimpy DDS girly arms looks very weird when they are uncovered. Hybrid bodies are the best we've had for a long time for DD sized boys but even so there are constant annoying issues with cobbling bodies together, like the arm pegs being too short so the arms (and hips) have to constantly be pushed back together or they pop out. The Obitsu 45cm male body is great, but it was just the wrong proportions for Tamayuki. There also is the 65cm Obitsu boy body if one can be found, but the rate of breakage issues is pretty high. And then there is the fact that the Obitsu bodies just are not as pretty/beautifully sculpted as the DD.

 

Our first hope of a promising DD compatable boy body came about a little over a year ago when Danny Choo finally decided to make a Smart Doll boy. He's due to be released this Fall but I have the dev. version and I can say I'm seriously in love with it. My only real complaint is that he doesn't come in more sizes! I love that he's taller than the DD but I still quietly grumble about not having a DDS or MDD sized boys. But even so, I personally still want actual DD/MDD/DDS boys made by Volks themselves simply for the sake that they have done the DD so well. I'd think it would be hilarious to have a guy to match with the DDdy and have him be uber buff. I'd also like to have a DD that would fit in between the MDD & DDS sizes... but that's another issue.

 

Now that I've had a chance to calmly think about Volks making Len, I'm still stunned that they are even making a boy character in any form, even if he does end up on a girl body. I seriously don't think he will, but there is just that nagging 5% doubt that just won't go away. I was going to make my own Rin & Len because I figured that there was a snowball's chance in hell that Volks would make him.

 

The only way that they could have shocked me even more is if they announced that they would be making the entire Ouran cast. Now that's my dollfie 'dream'.

 

I'm also not feeling so pessimistic about what Volks will do with Len now that I've had a chance to have it sink in and I've gotten past some massive stress that I was dealing with. My previous concerns are still valid but just not screaming at me. I'm slowly getting used to thinking about how much work it's going to save me so my custom Kagamines won't be a never ending project. I can have them and enjoy them without constantly seeing them as a to do list. Miku is already plotting on how to surprise Tama with meeting one of his biggest idols. Poor little guy might have a heart attack. Even though they are twins, I've never paid too much attention to Rin, so even before this I've been thinking on how I'd tweak her personality so she would have a place in our DD family without turning her into someone she isn't. It feels so odd having two character DD who will maintain those characters/personalities after they are added to our family. Miku was really the first in our household, but she's also Raven's girl and we turned her into a geek so I could stand her. But Rin & Len are R&L to me and I can't see them any other way. I still don't know what's going to happen having two sets of twins in our house, I'm sure Rainie will have something to say about it. She always does.

Hmm I think Volks are just testing the waters with Len. If they did make a bishounen character and the reception isn't as great as with the female characters, then they would've used/wasted a lot of money making a totally different body. With Len (being feminine), it won't be difficult to change DD body a bit to make it more guyish compared to if they had to make a DD very masculine and muscly.

 

Right now, it looks like the Japanese fans for DD are mostly consist of guys and this is their kind of way of persuading more women to join the community also. Hopefully this project will be a success and we can see almost the same amount of guys as girl DDs at future Dolpa releases too.

any further news from volks news 65 ? saw the Black jack and pinoko Super dolfies , the bust without torso and idol outfit

@Sister Kyoya, I was wondering if the smallest bust would work for a guy ! I'm guessing Len will have one if there is nothing new (male wise) being made by Volks? And as for Danny Choo, I love what he's doing I'm waiting to see what his tan and ebony girls will be like *sucker for tan* hopefully they'll be out this year too. The only thing that puts me off is that hole in his dolls backs for the stand lol.

The announcement poster isn't a ton to go on yet, but because they advertised a name of Rin/Len just like the software is titled, I'm expecting this to be a set. I could see it going "DDS Rin with Len's clothes included too", or perhaps a "DDS Rin with Len's clothes and a Len one-piece torso included too". I predict that the head sculpt will be the same.

 

There's no way to prove or disprove those predictions yet, so I'll be curious to go back later on and see how things match up.

 

A more useful bit of information is at the bottom of that poster they pointed out that Rin's and Len's Senbonzakura outfits would also be made.

Knowing that Miku has had a few outfits released I was wondering what they would do for the Kagamines. The senbonzakura outfits aren't bad, but what I'd really, really love is Len's 'Bad boy' outfit:

 

 

I currently have him wearing this in Project Diva with glasses instead of the mask and black cat tail and ears. It's too adorable. Plus the yellow eyes are so very different than his normal look especially with the yellow of his hair being rather pale. If they make Kaito I'd also love to have his similar outfit as well, although I could do without the mask.

 

 

And then I'm pretty sure it is highly unlikely, if Volks ever made Len's Punkish outfit I couldn't resist:

 

 

It looks like he took Rin's swimsuit and made an outfit from it, and if you've ever seen him dance in this, and all his girly, hip-wiggling glory, it's not hard to understand why it cracks me up every time. I think I laughed myself to tears the first time I saw it.

 

Even if Volks never makes these outfits, I may be doomed to make the clothing myself. I have no life, I just have DD.

Thinking about it more, I think there's a chance they will put Len on a guy body of some sort. Volks has a history of testing new products like bodies and skin tones with preorder projects, and eventually making them standard if they do well enough. The timing of this with smart doll guy becoming a thing does make it seem like they might be worried about competition. And therefore willing to test the waters.

 

And, SakuraSylph, I don't mean to sound rude but I severely hope you're wrong. Making it one doll with some interchangeable pieces probably wouldn't work anyways. They seem to design the faces off of the project diva games. Miku's t-scale, eye shape and feature proportions best resemble her appearances in that media. It's definitely not based on just their boxart. The guy who made those has a huge issue with same face syndrome. Anyways, in project diva Rin and Len have a similar t scale but most notably, they have different eye shapes and Len has thicker eyebrows. Also depending on the game Len's nose looks a little stronger. Volks not only took from Miku's appearance in that game but also improved it. The big issue being her borderline lack of cheeks and jaw that while improved in later games is still a tad lacking. Perhaps they would do more to differentiate the two racially speaking mostly by giving Len a slightly more prominent nose and possibly some thinner lips.

 

Making one sculpt for both of them would pass for both, but truly suit neither and I know Volks isn't that lazy.

Also, if they were just one doll with changeout parts, you couldn't have them both displayed together. As they're twins, I don't think collectors wouldn't like that.

That too! I adore both of them and if I couldn't have them both out I would be very unhappy with it.

Hmmm, I don't feel like they test anything with pre-orders. The only special item out there is Kanu's tan skin and Yoko's natural bust. Neither of which saw a standard or even pre-order/lottery re-release. Is more like they just make something because it is what that character needs, not cause they wanna test how the public reacts to it.

 

We have been treated to the flat ver. bust, but I do not see that as a conclusion of Yoko's pre-order considering how many years later did that take? I'm pretty sure that was simply because Alisa's design didn't work with their current bust types.

 

I think it is better to say they realize people are insanely in love with Vocaloids and the money is all there. So why not make the most of it? Pre-orders means max profit, and I think Volks gets away with a bigger chunk when they offer this very special service. They only seem to really offer it up for anniversaries or to big companies that can pay the big commission price these days. (or both haha)

 

As for Sakura's theory? I consider the batched up idea as rather far-fetched. They are twin characters, and that makes them individuals. I did also happen to think that doing the same head and different face-ups as a total possibility. I still think this is just a super easy method to make a male character because his body type and really entire self is rather feminine and can easily share the female parts. Just give him a little somethin' extra down in the crotch area. X'D

I don't think so, they just both had to design 3D versions of Miku. To me it's just the product of iXima's art + Serika Misaki's sculpting (she totally looks like one of his/her sculpts). The models in the Diva games have extremely flat faces too, just so they're easily recognizable against their 2D artwork.

I don't feel like they test anything with pre-orders. ... Is more like they just make something because it is what that character needs, not cause they wanna test how the public reacts to it.

I think it is better to say they realize people are insanely in love with Vocaloids and the money is all there. So why not make the most of it? Pre-orders means max profit...

I did also happen to think that doing the same head and different face-ups as a total possibility. I still think this is just a super easy method to make a male character because his body type and really entire self is rather feminine and can easily share the female parts.

Frankly I'd be surprised if Volks makes unique sculpts for both Rin & Len. After seeing much of the Project Diva images I decided that Snow Miku's sculpt would work for the both of them, so I'd be nothing more than a hypocrite to make the assumption that they would have to make two sculpts simply because they are releasing more than one DD. Case in point: Saber, Miku herself, or even just Mariko.

 

There is no previous precedent on how Volks may choose to deal with twins, opposite genders or not. Who's to say at this point that its a bad thing if they have the same sculpt with different faceups? We already know from the custom standard heads that a lot of variety is possible by changing the faceups. A couple of years back I posted some photos that made at least a few of the people on the forums think I had a new DD, even though 'Sassy' still had Tamayuki's original faceup and eyes but was just wearing Naiomi's wig and was on a DDdy body.

 

I do expect that Volks will put more effort than that into Len. There are just so many ways this could turn out that after getting over my initial shock, it has been interesting pondering over what exactly they will do, and how the forums will react with the results.

I'd be okay if they had the same sculpt with a different faceup but it would really awesome if they were different.since they're twins they should be similar, but perhaps give Len a different eye shape, slightly bigger nose and just a bit stronger of a jawline. I really love it when they go the extra mile with small details like that.

As I said before with pre-order projects they tend to have new body's or even body parts that maybe they are intending on making standard.

It could also be that they'll see how well Len does before getting any more licences for male characters but personally I think they already have one or two male characters in the works for next year as is the usual way they do things.

 

The smooth chest on Yoko was a request from Gainax from what I remember by the way. But yes she went up for pre-order around the time they announced the dynamite body originally.

 

I think we'll probably see the prototypes for Rin and Len around the end of October or early November so we'll have to wait until then for more details. They only announced that teaser cause they had a stall at Miku's big birthday event and purposely only gave minimal info to have people on the edge of their seat wanting more.

 

Also I see it mentioned a lot but I don't see Smartdoll and Volks being that competitive with each other and as far as I'm aware are on friendly terms like a lot of Japanese companies in the anime scene. Volks sells out on pretty much everything and are still highly desired which I don't see changing, while Danny seems to be doing well with his line up which has unique sculpts and bodies just like Sq-Labs, Obitsu and other anime doll companies.

I'm not interested in buying Rin or Len, but I am very anxious to see the final product. ^^ (Especially if that means more Crypton DDs!)

That Ribbon Girl outfit is a need for me though. I have my fingers crossed Volks won't just make us clickwar over them. :<

Not really interested in Rin or Len, but I'm definitely eager to see what Volks comes up with. I personally would love to see Kaito as a DD. I can imagine him really well in doll form.

You know, considering she was my first girl and my gateway to this hobby, plus Ixima's work on the package I really shouldn't have gone on that tangent. I blame con exhaustion.

Holy cow does this mean Volks will be making boy DD from now on too?!!! Oh my gosh that would be so great!
