Kagamine Rin & Len & New Miku outfits!*pic updated*

People have been able to pick up Rin and Len from stores since 2.5 hours ago, and there's already some photos leaking onto twitter. I've been watching the tags cos I really wanna see owner pics.

Haven't seen any Rin pics, but two people have posted their Lens.

They are so cuuute! But as expected, the default face up & eyes really aren't for me, so if (a very big if, that is) I ended up being able to bring them home, I would definitely repaint them and change the eyes into more expressive ones. I don't care for Miku much with her default face up, but all the custom Mikus that I've seen are to die for. *___* ♥ I'm sure that Rin & Len will be even more adorable with custom face ups, just like Miku~

I actually love the eyes. They are so vivid. if I could get find another set in the same style but red I will have found the eyes for my girl.

 

Edit: But granted, my girl isn't known for her expressiveness.

Owner pics! I'm so happy! Gosh, Rin is soo cute, I think I'm gunna have to start saving for her ASAP T_T

Looks like Len owners will have to be careful how they dress him, especially with the wigs. I want to try putting him in a honey brown wig, I think the color would be nice. I hope we'll get to see some custom face-ups.

Len looks very cute and boyish! If I get him, I'm afraid I will have to bite the bullet and send him off for a new faceup, though. Although the heavy black eyeliner is true to the drawings, I would really prefer him without it. And yellow is one of my least favorite colors, so the yellow eyeshadow would have to go.

 

His mouth sculpt is very subtle! It doesn't seem to be in character for him. But it's very different from the DD boys I already have, so that's good.

 

Both Rin and Len seem to have tall crowns to their heads!! It will make some wigs fit differently. I really like Volks boys' body sculpts, nice to see than Len is following along in that department.

Ahhhh Len! You need to go to the ER! Your wrist shouldn't turn that far!!

 

This is just a personal pet peeve, but when Volks themselves do it, it's not hard to see why their photos aren't as good as the owner pics. Because they pose them like dolls instead of taking normal human anatomy into account. Sure the DD can pose like that, but it makes them look freakish and unnatural. The owners actually care (at least somewhat) about thei DD and want them to look realistic. Even Rin's hand pose is borderline almost too far.

 

Does the Volks photographer even pay attention to their own body and how it works? I'd like to see a pic of them attempting that pose accurately.

 

And come on... these are the Kagamine twins! Would they seriously pose in such a borring way? Heck no! Rin would deffinately be haming it up for the camera, and Len would at least have his hip out. Unless a boy has a personality like Tama, in general they take up a lot of visual space. It's been a bit different for me to learn that for all my boys who aren't Tama because they look weird taking up as little space like he does. It's also why Rainie takes up so much space even if she's a girl, because it futher emphasizes her tomboy side.

Seeing Len's box art makes me more concider modding Snow Miku's head so I can make his mouth like that. It would be highly similar to Rainie's. I think of Len as being loud, boisterious, and energetic like she is so the Snow Miku and his default head with the closed mouth just looks so wrong. And if I happen to screw up a Snow Miku sculpt would be LOADS easier to replace.

I think you're right though, the official poses look more...stiff? All the owner pics so far have so much more personality. Even the ones posed in the Volks stores are posed better than in the official pics. It's reasons like this that I originally passed on Miku and have regretted it since (granted I was in no position to afford her when she first came up and have never been every time she came up since then, but alas)

 

However, the pics of Rin modelling Volks upcoming clothes ARE really cute. Got a little giddy seeing them.

Also, a bit late to the party but I entered into the lottery for both Rin & Len! I'm mostly hoping to get Len but Rin is growing on me more and more!

Rin is even cuter in real life! She has that mischievous look that just makes me melt (´∀｀)♡ Everything about her face perfect.

 

I'm more eh on Len's faceup, on the one hand I like that he doesn't look too happy (because I headcanon him to be pretty emotionless face wise >.>) but on the other hand he looks... too young?

I think I could "fix" it by giving him thicker eyebrows and sightly less coloured lips (they were less pink on Volks' pictures). I wonder if it is possible to do that while keeping his eyes intact? Does anybody know?

 

One last thing! Would you mind stop calling them twins? Since they aren't officially related, a lot of people headcanon them as lovers. But since many believe them to be officially twins and therefore think it's incest, the Rinlen shippers are having a hard time. What about calling them Kagamine duo or simply Rin and Len? It's a small thing but it would help!

Len's lips are pink?? *rants a little at Volks* Pink is for girl coloring. For boys you have to use tans/orange tones. Now all I can think of is that he would look like he has pink lip gloss on.

 

Usually if you wipe part of a faceup the entire thing gets wiped. Unless you are really careful and there isn't shading (like blush) around the area you are trying to remove.

 

I don't see why they shouldn't be called twins since thier voice came from a singular source. I see them as twins and always have. They often wear matching outfits, their hair is the same color as well as the style only being different based on gender, even the eyes and eyelashes are the same. If you have your own Rin & Len, you are free to do with them what you will. But assuming that everyone should follow your headcannon, well I just think everyone has the right to choose for themselves. Just because I see Len as a high energy extrovert, does that mean I should tell you that yours can't be a tsundare (or whatever)? DD are there to become personalized by their owners, allowing everyone to have a different story. If you feel like having a story where they are not related, I don't see why someone should stop you. There is such a massive variety of personalities and pairings thoughout the various families on the forums that differing oppinions really doesn't seem to be an issue. If I want my Len to be a yaoi boy I'll do it because that's the story I have for him. Seeing how each of the DD, official or custom, choose to have their stories written is one of the reasons I've found this forum so enjoyable for as many years as I have.

Ah, that's a misunderstanding! I do see them as twins too, it's just that I have friends who ship them and I'm concerned about it. Also I should have been clearer but it's only when talking about Rin and Len in general, not your Rin and Len. It wasn't directed at anybody in particular either. Well, I'm sorry anyway, I suck at explaining and my post didn't came out as I meant it to... I was just asking, not trying to force anyone. And I forgot to say that by stop calling them twins I meant using a neutral term. Sorry!

As a pretty massive yaoi fan I can understand the frustration with having a fandom that is different from the majority of opinions out there, even in the DD realm. Even when it comes to DD photography I seem to have drastically different standards of 'artistic' nudity. Same thing applies there. I've just learned to ignore what I don't like and not let it bother me if I can help it. I have my delusional world that I'm entirely content to live within. Life is a lot easier just focusing on the happy stuff and not worrying about everything else unless it's important.

 

Being able to obtain the first official DD boy... now that is very important!

The Twins Discourse is easily my least favourite thing about the vocaloid fandom (which I am already really not fond of, having been a fan of the thing since before miku came around and regularly being disappointed at the way a lot of people act in it) so can we...not bring that here of all places please. It doesn't matter whatsoever whether people call them twins or not. Volks literally wrote 'twin vocals' (ツインボーカル)in almost all the DD posts about them so as far as I'm concerned their base bodied are twins. (Never mind the fact that they have the same surname, are the same age and look the same.

I mean, they're robots, which would be manufactured and thus cannot have blood relatives, but you can't get mad that people call two almost identical characters with the same surname twins when almost all the marketing does, especially from Volks for the DD versions, just because 'some people ship it'.

 

Anyway Lens lips looked orangey to me? They're definitely not as pink as Rin's. Speaking as someone who -has- seen them in real life (in the Volks store), I'm pretty sure his lips being pink would have jumped out to me as being weird, but they were definitely orangey.

I was by no mean trying to start a discourse and I am not mad. I just asked, and if you want to continue calling them twins, that's totally fine by me because 1) I was not trying to force anyone and 2) I don't have a say about what word people can or cannot use.

It is official that they can be whatever you want to be, no matter how similar they look and even if they share the same last name. Even if Volks call them twins, it was confirmed many times by Crypton that they don't have any official relationship. It is probably the most popular ship in the Japanese fandom, and arguably in the Western one as well.

That being said I'll stop there, because I'm aware nobody want to receive an notice about this thread just to see people arguing.

 

Mmh, I looked at the irl pictures again and yeah, they're not really pink. I don't know why I though they were at first. Not that I have a problem with guys with pink lips anyway It's just not my thing on Len.

^that's actually interesting to know! that they are not blood related twins and are robots (I really don't know nothing about these vocaloid characters). Reading your posts have been enlightening in that aspect!

 

That's the beauty of these dolls, you can do whatever you want with them, the possibilities are endless! twins or not, what matters is that they make you happy in whatever way you see them as.

 

I don't mind pink lips on boy dolls either, my Sky is proof of that also, my Len will not be Len so the face up doesn't bother as I will wipe it off completely.

Thank you! That's really nice to hear, I'm happy my posts were useful to someone. Actually they're not necessarily robots either, they were conceptualized as androids (or at least Miku was) but you have total freedom in that aspect too!

Yeah, seems everyone has their own headcanons for the Vocaloids; I actually started writing a fanfic for my own headcanon once. Never finished it, but maybe I should. I wound up deciding the Vocaloid 1s were human, and the 2s were robots/androids. (The 3 engine hadn't been announced at the time.) Which meant poor Kaito was constantly baffled by his android children and kooky Robo-Wife. XD

My lips are a kind of pink and I'm a guy so wouldn't think it weird on Len O.o

 

Also Cryton never made their relationship clear and you have several very popular songs of their where they are lovers. It's really up to personal interpretation and whatever suits the song.

OMG! I want to read that!

 

Personally I don't care at all about the 'official' interpretation of the Vocaloids because I learned about the characters through YouTube. SO MUCH of what the Vocaloids are now are based on how people choose to use and interpret them. The fanbase is responsible for much of the character development. Rin & Len and the ‘road roller’ is one, and I think the banana/orange thing is too. So my opinion is if they were restricted to what Crypton themselves decide who they are, they would barely be more than a box full of musically coded 1’s and 0’s with a severely drab interface. They were given characters as a marketing tool and a way for people to connect and understand the software, but that doesn’t mean I have to treat our growing collection of Vocaloid DD as mere marketing tools. Even some of our custom DD have Vocaloids connected to them (Ralph/Big Al, Ringo/Kaai Yuki, Naiomi/Sonika, Tama/Oliver with more American pronunciations, etc.) because I like how much more ‘real’ it makes them. If I wanted to keep my official Vocaloid characters (Crypton + Kiyoteru) accurate I’d have them all speaking in Japanese but that would make my life severely difficult. But I’ve already decided (after too much OCD worrying) that they will all speak English unless there is a reason or a joke behind it.

 

The Vocaloid fandom is pretty darn vast, and that’s one thing I like about it. SO many ways to interpret things. Heck even with Len there is the vast difference between the younger shota Len and some I’ve seen of him where he’s practically grown up. And for Rin, much of how her fandom interprets her I’m not too fond of because she just seems to be too mean. So I decided to take a different approach to her personality that to me meshes a lot better with my version of Len.

 

Just to make it clear, I’m not mad at all in any way. I’m finding this discussion to be highly interesting, finding out how other people see the Kagamines and Vocaloid DD in general. Simply by the sheer cost of a single DD it doesn’t surprise me that we get so attached to them (other than their character that is) because it’s not an insignificant amount to fork out.

 

I was pretty late getting into the Vocaloid game and that only happened because of Raven’s fanboy side. I think it was a little more than a year or so after buying Kiyoteru that Oliver & v3 was announced, six years after the Vocaloids had been released. So there was already a pretty darn vast fandom there to pick and choose from. I’ve found the Vocaloid Wiki to be pretty helpful in making sense of a lot of it.

 

I’m grateful for this conversation & the distraction it’s giving me. That way I don’t have to think about how far away the lottery announcement is to find out I lost.

Ha! I figured you would be the one to say that!

 

But other than their domestic/home life, a lot of the premise was actually pretty dark--it took place in a totalitarian future where entire continents were owned/run by corporations instead of governments. Without delving too hard into the world-building, the governing corporation commissioned the Vocaloids as a way to get compliant pop stars to appease the populace.

 

The programmers were more devoted to the AI side of the project than their employers intended though, and suffice it to say, the "compliant" part. . . didn't exactly pan out, lol.

 

And yes, it WAS influenced by 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, why do you ask?

 

Yet, none of this explains why Kaito had a neighbor named Thaddeus who kept barging in periodically to steal Kaito's food and mess with his computer. Yeah, between Thaddeus breaking in, the twins discovering a fondness for microwaving things that should not be microwaved, and Miku being a troll, Kaito's life was a dark sci-fi out in the world, and a sitcom at home. Clearly that genre whiplash would need to be ironed out if I ever picked the project back up again. XD
