I actually really like stories that have both really comedic, light-hearted moments and very dark segments and themes. Because when you can laugh and smile with characters, you get the greatest emotional impact when bad things happen: you need enough light to see the darkness by, so to speak.

 

And yeah, one thing I was really amazed by in Vocaloid was how...multicanonical it was, because of nearly all the content being made by different producers. So you have Rin and Len as physical twins, Rin and Len as "twin-souled" lovers, both at once because despite how upset people seem to get over it these aren't mutually exclusive; Rin and Len as...not really interacting with each other at all; Rin and Len as robots created together with no seeming emotional bond, etcetera, etcetera.

 

In a way,Volks is also a producer, and it seems like in Volks-P's Canon, Rin and Len are twins.

 

But! People make character dolls into their own versions of those characters, or into totally different characters, all the time! So if you want to stick with your Len and Rin as twins, that works, and if you want yours to follow a different canon and be lovers instead, that works too, and if you want to make them into totally different characters, that works as well! That's the beauty of dolls: they really do let you make your own version of a character, whoever that character may be. So just like jazijaz said, find what makes you happy and enjoy your dolls ^__^

In theory, I'd agree, but in execution. . . not so much. XD Instead of it being a bit of dark humor interspersed among the angst, it was like you got tossed into a completely different novel the second someone came home! It was not only an early effort, but I only got partway through the first draft. During NaNoWriMo. Before I learned how much outlines help me. I still really like the premise, but suffice it to say, if I were to re-visit it today, it'd be getting a complete rewrite so it would have a more even tone and fewer pointless tangents. Far more likely to attempt to finish a draft of one of my 100% original stories before going back to that one, though.

 

And yes, I actually really love how much room for interpretation the Vocaloids have--I've gone so far as to say that Miku is the poster-child for consumer generated media.

 

As for the whole twincest slant, at this point I just roll my eyes and move on when it comes up. I've poked around in fandom too much to be surprised--Elricest (FMA), Holmescest (Sherlock), and Pinescest (either DipperxMabel or StanfordxStan for Gravity Falls) are all unfortunately things, and taught me that you can't stop the internet from being weird, so all you can really do is ignore it and hope it languishes in obscurity if you don't like it. XD

 

Oh, a rarer Kagamine interpretation is that they're two "aspects" of the same person. That concept tends to induce a bit of brain-melting for a lot of people though, so you don't see it often--can't even remember the last time I saw it come up. (May have been YouTube comments, lol.)

Just got her today! I'll make a bigger post in the New Arrivals board once I finish editing the unboxing video, but here's a few for now.

 

Gonna take some nicer photos of her tomorrow at the Volks store in their summer photo space.

 

I still can't get over how cute she is. I thought I'd be prepared after already seeing her IRL in the store but..nope. I noticed that the Volks photos make her eyes look smaller than they actually are, maybe something to do with the focal lens? (note: i dont know anything about photography). But I had a similar problem trying to take pics of her: what i saw on my iphone screen, a lot of the time, looked different to how I saw her IRL, and her eyes look a lot bigger and cuter IRL.

 

My only compaint so far is that the way you attach her bow to the headphones isn't great; its really flimsy. The button that clips together is too bulky to allow the headphones to sit flat on her head when its on, and me fiddling with it caused the clips to become really loose so now the ribbon flops around a lot and only stands up straight if its leaning slightly forward (which is how its supposed to look I suppose, but if I bump her it falls down). I think it might come loose completely eventually so I'm going to see about attaching it more securely.

Only other thing is the little black plastic clips that go on her arm covers were impossible for me to get on so I didn't bother. I honestly didnt even notice them and dont care about them not being there.

 

Attaching her hair clips is a pain, and i did rush it a bit because i was impatient to get photos so you can see they're pretty uneven in these pics. I'll get them on better later on.

 

I also wanted to see how she'd look in Kaito's wig, although his was too small for her (unfortunately his head looks way too small next to hers; I knew they'd be slightly out of scale from the beginning but I didnt realise Rin's head would be even bigger than Miku's!) but his old one still fits and this is also a really cute look on her!

 

If anyone wants to see photos from certain angles then let me know.

I finally have a DD ;_; (and it only took me like a year or so after joining this place lol)

Out of curiosity, what is her mold number? If you pop off her head (way less scary than it sounds), there should be a number imprinted in the vinyl on the underside of her head (where it attaches to the neck).

Do you think you can take a few pictures of Rin next to Kaito? I want to see how she looks next to a Smart Doll Eiji model.

Argh!!!!!!!!!! Now I do want her. There is just something about her face and expression I just am loving. She looks so much more adorable in your photos then she did in any official post. Sigh...

 

As for those arm sleeve clips, yes, they are a pain to get on. Miku has them too, and worse for her, her hair keeps getting caught in them, so it pulls on her hair, and half the time pops them back off. I wish they were part of the sleeve like the keyboard panels are.

Awww! Congrats, I know you've been waiting a long time for her. She really does look absolutely adorable.

 

Fantastic job with the pictures. I especially love her pose in that first one. If there was any doubt before, now I know for sure that at some point she is going to be added to our horde.

 

I also appreciate the honest critique of her accessories. Volks always has a few pieces that are troublesome/weak, so it's good to know beforehand what those are specifically.

I personally dont think they look great together. It doesnt bother me so much because I expected it, but I was still surprised at the size of her noggin lol. If I do any photo stories with both of them I'll try to use some perspective tricks to make it less obvious.

Somehow it doesnt look as noticeable in the photos as it does IRL though??

I think it might be more the more elongated narrow shape of the smart doll head compared to the rounder shape of the DD head that makes it look odd (especially at the back)

 

also how her head looks like on the smartdoll body. That size doesnt actually look bad on it, but definitely gives a more youthful appearance. The temptation to make more boys is strong ;-; It went on easy but it wobbles, so you'd need to use some tape or clear tubing to make the smart doll teck tubey thing thicker.

Oh wow. With just the heads by themselves, Rin's doesn't look too much bigger, but on their bodies it make a huge difference.

 

Now I wonder if all DD heads look like this next to an Eiji head or if it's just Rin...

Yes, smart doll boys have very small heads especially compared to DD girls. He takes a size 8 inch wig while dd girls seem to fit 9-10 sized ones better. I can't have my boy around any of my DDs because it just makes him look odd. So he hangs out with Mirai all the time as her head doesn't make his look quite as small.

I don't think Eiji looks any stranger with DDs than having an 03 or an 05 with the bigger headed ones. And anime boys often have slightly smaller heads. So in pictures at least it doesn't bother me.

Most of the time I thought they're quite equally the same size, sometimes anime boys tend to have larger and longer heads. Most of the time anime girls are portrayed with 2 times the google eyes ( ) than their boys counterpart which could contribute to your judgment, perhaps?

 

In Torino's case (by the way, congratulations for your first DD Torino, she's lovely I'm so jealous!) I just don't think they look quite as... canon (?) together. Rin heads slightly bigger in scale compared to Kaito especially if we were to consider the obvious fact that she's a younger character. Might be possible in anime but the same aesthetic just doesn't cut it in real life, especially for dolls. Though it is understandable since they're both from different company. Still I wouldn't really care much, I do think they look adorable together, brought this up for the sake of the DD and SmD compatibility discussion.

No, it's more like they often have a sharper or longer jawline, making the face look more slender, and that they often have less huge amounts of hair. It's obviously not always the case at all. I still think Eiji just at most looks like he came from a different artist/anime, but w/e so does KosMos and I have her along with my others too.

No, there was never any doubt. I fell for her as quickly as I did for Bree's head sculpt and that was instantanious. What bothers me is the gap in time between getting Len and when Rin would be possable since Jan-March seems like it would be the next doable point. Ideally I wanted the twins to be here at the same point and part of the reason why I got the Snow Mikus, but if Len is here loads of time before Rin, I'm stuck with the weird problem we had with Rainie & Ringo when one was finished for ages and the other rarely surfaced until she got her body. I've at least got a couple of ideas of what to do with the extra Snow Miku head, but one of those would just be solved with Rin Tohsaka...

 

Personally I don't think Kaito & Rin look weird together at all. I really don't understand the whole not being able to put the DD with the Smart Doll thing. There is a massive variety in in human body shapes, sizes, proportions, and all that. I'm 5'6", my older sister isn't even 5' and my nephew is getting close to being a foot taller than her (and is taller than me now, it's so weird!) and still growing. Not to mention differences based on ethnic variances even when skin tone is a non-issue. Personally for me I've found it strange for a while that there is a severe lack of variety in the DD other than the obvious boob sizes. It's also why I have a lot of hybrids because it adds a lot more variation to our Kiddos.

 

And yes, DD heads are a bit wabbily on the short Smart Doll neck joint. I made a DIY adapter for ours that's really easy to do (paper, hanger wire, & heat shrink tubing) and works well but I keep forgetting to do a tutorial for it.

Ahhh Rin looks so adorable! The eyes + faceup look way better in person than on the official website.

For me they look a little odd together because of the difference in proportions - Eiji has the body of an adult male, and Rin has the body of a young girl, and yet they're almost the same height. However in order for Kaito to be the 'right' height compared to Rin Eiji would have to be a whole lot taller, maybe even 70cm, and I dont think I can deal with that much doll yet pft.

 

I noticed this recently since I have her in a shoulderless outfit now but there does seem to be a very tiny bit of staining near her shoulder, on the 'lip' of her shoulder hole, which must be from the yellow trim on her sleeveless top. It's not really noticeable so it doesnt bother me but just a head's up anyway.

I'm a lot more curious about whether Len's clothes will stain easier since they are black and not greay - even if they are white lined there are still grey threads on the lining in Rin's pants so I imagine there's black thread on Len's. A lot of people who have posted their Len's on twitter took him out of the default set almost immediately cos they didnt want to risk it but I haven't yet heard if it actually does stain.

I can see how for some characters that visual height would represent age, but personally I don't think it's a big deal. In our family the only one that one really applies to is Tama and the fact that he may be the only actual MDD boy we would have. He's 12 and is supposed to be short for his age, so even if Eddie is the same age or slightly younger (haven't figured it out yet) he would still be an Obitsu 45cm. Then there is Rainie & Ringo who are 13 and Obitsu 45cm and Gizella who's 13 and a DDS. For me I just explain these differences with stories so I don't worry too much if everything isn't perfect. I really wanted my Rin & Len to be Obitsu 45cm rather than DDS, but I knew if I did that, any of the outfit patterns for them that I'd make wouldn't be sharable with anyone who kept their default bodies.

 

Height wise I think your Kaito looks right height wise for the Project Diva version. For me personally, once I got the Smart Doll boy body I knew I'd never have one bigger than that. Much of it has to do with clothes drafting and amounts of fabric I'm used to using but it also affects how much pattern pieces need to be pieced back together after printing off out of Illustrator. A body any bigger than that and it would just be too much fuss for it to be worth it for me. I've had them for over a year now and I still can't quite get over how much bigger it is than the DD. Apparently 'DD/MDD size' is my ideal range. Dolly rarely gets new clothes because I kinda hate sewing on that scale, and why I quit collecting Barbies many years ago. Couldn''t stand the fuss of doing hand sewing that I'm bad at because the tiny seams wouldn't fit under the sewing machine foot and still see what I was doing. Maybe I'll have Raven make him some clothes so it look like Dolly made them himself. Truthfully I just need to buck up and deal with it since I have more that size in desperate need of good clothes... (Please excuse me for my rambling today. I can't seem to make it quit.)

 

Good to know about the concerns of staining with Len's clothes. I'll do some stain testing once I get him (one way or another) because I've got tons of leftover body parts that don't mater if they get stained. It's just weird having a box of boobs.

As a feamle who has no interest in boobs other than the shape they give clothes and what's required for various personalities, yes I find it weird. More than once I've run across the bin and thought 'Who do these belong to??' I know Dakota came with a spare set and we bought an extra SS bust, but the other random boobs I'm not sure where they came from. I have the Obitsu male bust that I used for Ralph before his current body and the extra chest like Lucas has, so all the extra boy parts are accounted for but I'm lost on how I ended up with 3 extra DD boobs... I rarely buy them seperately. I just hope they are't multiplying.

Most of the ones I have are M-busts and DDdy busts. Girls I've changed to the L-bust or Shapely L-bust is where all the M-busts came from so those are easy enuff to figure out. But all the random DDdy busts I have aren't all accounted for. I know a few of them are from me changing over to the Peach Pai and others are from going from the regular shaped to the Shapely but there's like 3 or 4 of them I have no recollection of where they came from or why I have them. Not that I'm complaining since it's always good to have spare parts around......
