Removing custom/default face-ups... Staining?

Recommended Posts

I've seen a few custom DD heads for "decent" prices around the internet, but (assuming they used the normal pastels/MSC etc) would removing a custom face up leave any staining? Same goes for DD default face-ups... Do they leave marks/staining if removed? Is a magic eraser the best route to removing a face-up on a DD? I'm very new to vinyl dolls so any info or photos would be appreciated

Sometimes default faceups on older heads can be hard to remove, but in my experience they don't leave stains. That's based on having redone Asuka and Nemu, a WS girl may be a different story.

But a custom faceup is a big unknown- sometimes the head wasn't sealed first. Or the artist could have used poor materials like pen or nailpolish. Or even a good faceup artist can sometimes have used a paint or pastel that stained anyway. So if you want to remove the faceup, consider if you will be able to cover any potential stains with a new faceup.

To remove faceups I use Windsor and Newton brush cleaner - however some folks have found this to yellow heads. The other option is a colorless nailpolish remover. In either case make sure you don't leave a solvent on the head for long, and wash it well with warm soapy water to remove. It can take a couple tries and scrubbing with cotton swabs to get every bit of color off. For sealed custom heads you'll have to clean the entire head thoroughly to avoid sticky/patchy areas of sealant. Default heads aren't sealed so you only remove the painted bits.

Sorry for such a long-winded answer, good luck on your search

Don't be sorry~ this was more than helpful, thank you ! I hadn't thought about quite a few things you mentioned. I think I'll pass on the "rescue" heads right now just to be safe
