Kushina Posted September 18, 2015 I wanted to do my first face-up and got most of the materials but I have one question about MSC. I read in some threads that you need a good mask because MSC is toxic? Could you tell me which mask you use or what I have to look for? There are a lot of different mask (and a big price range) so I'm not sure whats sufficient. Would be great if someone could help me Dollfie Family: DD Emilia - DD Mashiro Mito (Custom) - DD Asuna Titania - DDdy Sasara - DD Kirika - DDH16 Tan - DD Rin Tohsaka
Minuette Posted September 19, 2015 I've heard you need a respirator rated at least R95? I may be confused and you may only need that for modding resin. It never hurts to be careful though! I found an article telling you everything you could possibly want to know about respirators.
vhdangel Posted September 19, 2015 To be safe with MSC you need a half-mask double cartridge respirator with cartridges that filter even organic vapors. You should not be able to smell any of the chemical when you have the mask on. You also need to make sure you have a secure fit of the mask so vapors don't leak in around the sides that touch your face. You also need to change out the filter cartridges on a regular basis. The masks usually run around $30, with replacement cartridges $10 for a pack. It's an excellent (and important) investment for your health. If you want the link to the DoA thread on the subject (with some amazing information given by experts on chemicals), I can dig that up for you, just let me know. N95 dust masks are ok for modding resin. The dust (resin particles) is what's toxic. It's best to have a vacuum set-up, though.

I can get a mask for around $15 with two filter on each side (and thats supposed to be for painter?) or a high end mask for $50 with the same description as the cheaper one @_@ Really confusing~ But now I have some clues and can go to one of our local shops to ask. Thank you very much for all the replies! Norths_Fallen_Angel Posted November 2, 2015 I use an R95 with double carbon filter...put it this way...if you can smell MSC then its getting into your lungs. You are best to shell out and invest in a good respirator...it pays for itself in the end
kirsei Posted January 29, 2016 Hey there! I got my mask off Amazon; it's the 3M Paint Project Respirator and it's under $30. I would give you a link, but my account can't do that yet, boo!
orlien Posted January 29, 2016 Do not spray MSC without a respirator!!! You want one with P95 protection + Organic vapor cartridges if you're going to be spraying MSC. Here is a very good thread from DoA that explains everything: DoA Here is what I use: Respirator Organic Vapor Cartridges P95 Filters Filter Clips It's a little expensive, but your health is worth it! EDIT: You should also wear a mask while sanding - you don't need organic vapor cartridges for that but you still need P95 protection. Vinyl dust in lungs = BAD. EDIT #2: Gloves and eye protection (eg goggles) are also good when spraying MSC. You really don't want that stuff in your eyes, and it's preferable to avoid skin contact as well. jadepixel Posted February 15, 2016 this is an odd question ... but what does MSC actually smell like? i saw somewhere someone mention it smells like banana flavour Hahah no, it doesn't smell like banana to me, it has a strong chemical/paint type of smell. You will definitely notice it. It's not as bad as the ZM power spray smell though, that stuff is STRONG. But as others have advised get a respirator when you use it, and spray outdoors away from humans/pets if you can. I got my mask from Amazon as well, it's a 3M in size Small- hard to find around here, but small size is recommended for women. The cartridges are certified for 24 hours of use, which for a quick doll spray can mean that they last a very long time. I also use a painter's mask for sanding/mods and using pastels, since the particles are bad for you too. jadepixel doll lab jadepixel eye shop

I will hold my breath to spray and run to the other end of my house for some clean air lol... I think it's time I should get one thank you so much jadepixel Faceup Lab : viewtopic.php?f=18&t=11412
