HELP! New Member

Hi everyone, I'm brand new here and brand new to the doll world. I've been researching sporadically about getting a smart doll or another BJD for a little over a year, and researching very heavily over the past couple of weeks. I think I have a general understanding of size differences (maybe?) between different types of dolls like DDs, MDDs, SQlabs, but its hard to be sure since many websites i look at are translated poorly or in general don't seem to be very informative.

 

After all my research I decided I really want to purchase a Mirai smart doll. I love her body and size and hand and bust options, however I would like to purchase a different kind of head for her. Unfortunately, Dannychoo doesn't seem to have a large variety of facial shapes and expressions for his dolls yet. I understand that some things can be changed with modding and faceups but since I'm brand new to this I obviously dont want to try anything to ruin such a precious investment myself.

 

I read through different blogs and forums that I can probably buy a DD head or something similar to fit on Mirai's body, and that the best place to look for this might be the Yahoo Japan Auctions. So i've been scouring it day by day and I found a head with a really cute face up that I like that includes eyes as well. Now my only question is that from what I can tell its an Obitsu 50-04 custom made with the eye holes opened and 20mm eyes put in, as well as a custom face up. Will this fit on Mirai's body? I absolutely fell in love with how cute the head is, but I don't want to buy the wrong thing and end up with doll parts that don't fit together Also unfortunately the bidding for the item ends in 2 days so I don't have much time to figure this out and from all the sites I've looked at I can't find any direct comparisons between the two dolls.

SmartDoll head and neck peg is similar to a Dollfie Dream head (on the left), just the hole is smaller on SmartDoll and the neck peg is thinner. Obitsu head (on the right) has a big hole, so I assume you need to have an adapter of some kind. Unfortunately, I don't know anything like it.

Hard to say... SmartDoll body is quite slim, so it could look better with a smaller head than DD body. I have Obitsu head for 60cm body and I could take a picture of it on SmartDoll body, but in the meantime you have to google whether the 60cm and 50cm heads are the same size or not. I'm at work now, so I'll be able to take the picture in ~10h.

A picture would be totally great Its a little hard for me to know where to find that kind of information, but it looks like on the Obitsu site that the head sizes may be similar. What is the head you've found based on? You can share the link, so maybe we could figure it out. On the last page of the pdf there is a table for large bodies. If the had you want is marked as good for 50cm, but not good for 60cm, there is a big chance it won't look good on SmartDoll body.

Btw, you can dig through the Obitsu section of this forum. Maybe you could find answers for your questions more easily.

I did also scroll through the Obitsu posts for a good chunk of pages and I didn't see anything that would seem to be of help in my particular situation. However if I took a few hours to read through them individually in depth that may not be the case.

Oh, it's all Japanese T___T I can't figure it out at the moment - it would take too much time. But I can't see 50-04 either... But in the chart there are heads marked as "Obitsu 50HD-F01" and "...02", so I guess (just guess) they may be similar and they are marked as not recommended for 60cm.

DDH06 is much safer choice. It would look good for sure on a SmartDoll body, just if the skin tone matches.

Skin tone subject may be a bit tricky, because every company has its own tones and names for them.

SmartDoll has basically one skin tone (not including ebony, which is much darker). That skin tone matches to Dollfie Dream normal skin.

Dollfie Dreams have normal skin, semi-white skin and white skin. I think only normal skin will match SmartDoll. SmartDoll skin is much on a pink side of the normal skin color, but it is still a good match.

Obitsu white skin is the one that matches DD normal skin (although the name is confusing) and it's the most popular skin tone for Obitsu (everything in parabox shop is in white skin). It is a bit on a white side of normal skin and although it matches DD normal skin pretty well, it may look strange on pinkish SmartDoll (and here comes the photo I promise to take for comparison).

On my twitter account (myshax86) there are pictures of Isabelle (DD Saber) on both SmartDoll body and Obitsu body. The one with a pink or blonde wig is a SmartDoll body, and with a brown wig is an Obitsu body - so you can see the skin tones. I don't have time to find the exact pictures for you now... Just dig through the pictures on my twitter (or instagram).

Heya! I've been interested in this head for a while too! The Obitsu 50-04/Mafuyu head is actually a bit bigger than the other 50cm heads like Mizuki, Misuzu, and Kanna. While I don't have any concrete numbers about the head cirbleepference, I have read on some blogs that a 9 wig is recommended. The Obitsu(not parabox) store even updated with 8-9" wigs featuring the Mafuyu head when they started selling the head separately too, so the head size actually might not be too small compared to Smart Doll and DD.

 

The 50-04 head you've got your eyes on is adorable, good luck winning her if you decide to bid after all!

Yeahh... everything is all in japanese xD. It makes it even harder to discern exactly what's going on haha. Even with google translate most of the posts make little to no sense. I was kind of thinking the same thing about the other heads listed as 50HD-F01 etc. In that case I will be very sad.

 

If DDH06 is a safer choice, then I need to purchase not the :white: head but instead :normal: skin color?

That's interesting... I'm almost thinking i might just buy the head, and if it doesn't work out on a smart doll body then selling it back or, dare i say it, get another doll for it. The head is super CUTE I agree haha. It's the first one I've seen on auction that I really love. Is there any way you can link some of the blogs or sites you read about the 50-04 on? I'm having a hard time finding things about it. I think since I'm new I just don't really understand the proper things to search to find what I want

I think you should get that Obitsu head. You love it and that's what matters. It would be sad if you had to give up on her just because you're not sure. If she won't work with SmartDoll body, you can just put her in a box and wait till you can buy her an Obitsu 50 or MDD or any other suitable body. Just don't give up on the face you really love.

I've made the pictures I promised.

It may not be so obvious in the photos, but there is really visible tone difference. SmartDoll is pink and Obitsu is yellow-white. When I saw they together is was just no. Dollfie Dream normal skin matches good with both SmD and Obitsu, because it is somewhere between them, but SmD and Obitsu doesn't look good for me at all.

But on the other hand, my head is blank, and yours would be with faceup / blushing and that could make a difference and help a bit.

I'm still new to these forums too so I can't post links just yet, but I can tell you that my research methods can be quite.. haphazard LOL I tend to search through Japanese images and blogs, especially since the obitsu 50-04 head has only recently been sold separately there. Luckily it's been a popular enough head that faceup artists regularly put them up for auction(I wish the same could be true for the PARABOX Luna head, but I digress). But yes I would usually start off by searching something like "オビツ 50-04 ウィッグ" and go from there. Pretty basic but at least you get to see a lot of pretty dolls along the way! xD

 

Going back to the auction of the 50-04 head you're interested in, it appears that the body that head is on might not be an 50cm obitsu? The hands being as large and detailed as they are make me think it may be a DD(or DDS?) and the proportions in general make it seem like she's taller than 50cm, but I'm not an expert so it's better if someone else weighs in too.

I'm pretty sure it's DD (or DDS) body - fists and feet look familiar. And again - obitsu head will match a DD body pretty well, but most probably won't match a smartdoll body.

 

So... if it's a body stopping you from getting the girl of your dreams, maybe you should just choose another body ? DDS would be nice for this head, as it's not as mature as normal DD.

To repeat what others have said, the 50-04 will look small on the Smart Doll body as it's proportioned for the Obitsu 48cm or 50cm body, bodies much shorter and slimmer than the Smart Doll.

 

The body the 50-04 appears on in the auction is not an Obitsu body. I can verify those are not Obitsu 50cm fist hands. From what little can be seen of the peg that goes from the wrist joint ball into the forearm, it appears to be square (note the hard corner in picture #1 and #4). That same part on the Obitsu 48/50cm is round. Also the torso in picture #6 has a similar appearance to a Dollfie Dream torso, not an Obitsu torso.

Because of the appropriate head to body proportions shown in the pictures, in all likelihood that is a DDS medium(?) bust body.

My opinion is if you really, really like that head and face-up as shown in the auction, and you are comfortable with the price, buy it. You can figure out what body is right for it later when you're not under the gun.

Although it's hard to tell in the photos, I will take your word for it. My boyfriend also said that the body seemed pinker and the head yellow-white and he didn't even read the thread first, just looked at the picture for me And I was thinking more and more about it, and you are right. Why would I sacrifice a girl I really love already (love at first sight) just because I want a specific body? Looking again at the Dollfie Dream Sister bodies, they are pretty nice as well, with the added bonus of being slightly shorter/cuter. I guess what had me so hung up was the beautiful sculpting on the chest on the Smart Doll and how it looks more like one piece as opposed to two. However, when I was looking at the Volks site, I noticed there's options to get a DDS body that IS indeed one piece, although I'm not sure if there's a functional difference or if it's just aesthetic. Also, maybe silly me, but I like that the smart doll comes with body blushing to an extent, since I don't know how to do that myself..

 

But i suppose that might be silly in the grand scheme of things.

So all in all, I'm thinking you guys have some really sound advice and I should shoot for perhaps a DDS instead. Only a few questions there then,

 

1. Are DDS still considered 1/3 even though they are a bit shorter? There's a few items of clothing for my new girl that I had my eyes set on and put aside for when this was all figured out, but they are 1/3 proportion. Is that okay? (I don't mind if they are a little big on her, it could look kind of cute)

 

2. I found a DDS Melty body only (Christmas Ver. if that matters) on Auction. If I'm to understand correctly, there are older and newer versions of the Dollfies, and the newer ones have more mobility. Would this be a newer version? EDIT: Looks like its pretty new So.... nevermind.

As far as I know, the only functional difference is that it's harder (if ever possible) to get to the inner frame of one-piece torso. The poseability is the same, as it is made of soft vinyl. At least that's what I've heard - I don't own one-piece torso.

What blushing are you referring to? SmD body doesn't have any blushing - it's just a different color of vinyl, but it's not a paint or anything...

DDS is still 1/3 even if it's shorter. Its legs are shorter - I had to roll up the jeans legs for about 2-3cm. Basically all generic outfits that are for DD will fit on DDS - t-shirts, dresses etc. Trousers will be a bit too long. And DDdy outfits will be too baggy

Hmmm correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought with Smart Dolls if you buy the medium or large breast replacement you had the option to have it painted? Which if that's the case is nice because it makes the body look a little more realistic. Although on that topic, are there people that do custom body painting like how people do commission face ups?
