DDH 07 Kaito Project(Now With Pictures)

So I thought I'd start a thread about what I'm currently working on. I'm making Vocaloid Kaito, but not just any Kaito...I'm going to attempt his Diamond Dust outfit.

 

So since I can't post pictures quite yet, I can just explain what I have down until I can.

 

Head - DDH-07(Obtained and face up is done)

Body - Obitsu 60cm male (Obtained)

Wig - Brushed yarn wig made by me (I need to remake it though...didn't come out the way I wanted it to. Being lazy for now because they take me about 3 days...)

Eyes - Blue Rose Garden (Obtained. I know the size is too large, but I like the color of them too much for the size to bug me too much. Finding a decent color match was the real struggle here.)

Clothes - (Ordered base clothes) I'm better at customizing that I am at sewing from scratch in this case. I work in plush and not clothes, so I think this route will be a bit easier on me. I have the intermediate sewing skill, just not in this area or on this scale. So I'm using some "base" clothes, and I should hopefully be able to get them to work with me. I've ordered a white coat and white pants from Dollmore and I got the white collared shirt and shoes from ebay. The trouble I'll be having with these is how to get the gradient sort of look. I'm a bit scared to mess with dye(but I will), and I don't have an airbrush.

 

I'm content with how he currently looks(his wig looks okay from a distance...), though this is very early into this, so changes will definitely be made. So hopefully I can update with pictures soon.

 

So now onto pictures!

 

Admittedly, I'm a newbie to faceups, so I'll probably re-do it at some point...I am awful about making the left side even to the right.

 

 

So here he is, with the pair of temporary eyes I got him before I found the BRG ones.

 

 

I forgot to mention it, but I did also mod the face a little. I sanded the lips down and attempted to make a teeny tiny bit more room for a more prominent smirk.

 

 

And here he is pre-haircut Just a big mess of fluff. Also please excuse the...unconventional temporary shorts I have on him. I just wanted him to have something on instead of being totally naked for weeks. If anyone is wondering, they're actually part of the Giants uniform from Build a Bear. They're just heavily pinned. His actual temporary outfit should be here any day now.

 

 

 

And finally, here he is with that "first draft" wig of mine and with the new eyes in. So yeah, not perfect, but hey, that's why it's a WIP, right? Hopefully more updates soon!

I'll be watching your progress with great interest!

A 1/3 Kaito is something I also want, although I'm going the Smart-Doll route. Since Eiji with a blue wig and possibly different eyes will be expensive enough for me I haven't really planned much further than that and I'll be happy with a casual Kaito (with his scarf and maybe some headphones), but once I have more funds I do plan to make/commission his many Project Diva outifts and get a bunch of wigs in different shades of blue. The ones I like the most are Gakuran Parker and White Blazer...although Cyber Neko would be fun too

 

I'm mostly interested in how you'll do the wig, although yours will be a different shade of blue to mine. Finding the default Kaito shade in a style I want is so difficult and I really hope Danny actually will make blue wigs so I wont have to... (He did retweet the photoshopping job I did of Eiji with blue hair, so I dont know if thats a sign or not;;) Otherwise I think I might have to get one of Dollce's blue wigs with the clip on twintails and just take those off.

 

I wish you a lot of luck with this project and I can't wait to see more progress! Only a few more posts until you can post pics. Kaito is my no.1 favourite character from anything so I'm always happy to see other people who love him enough to spend huge amounts of money on him

I'm always happy to see someone else enthusiastic about Kaito too! I thought Diamond Dust would work best as a doll, but Gakuran Parka is actually my favorite!

 

I decided to go the Obitsu route because Eiji is a little too muscular for my liking. I definitely like more of the bishounen body type, and that style in general, so that's what you'll get out of my Kaito. But I think seeing another Kaito with that body would be really cool too! Part of why I take an interest in Vocaloids is because you can picture them as so many things and in so many different styles! I think that's a big part of the fun.

 

I had the exact same problem with the wig >_< I don't know why finding a royal blue is so difficult! And with this outfit, finding one with the proper color mixing is impossible too. Which is part of why I figured I'd just make it myself. The other part was that I just love the fluffiness of a yarn wig. Done right, it feels like a fluffy cloud. And for some reason, I think the scruffy/rough around the edges look it has makes the hair look more masculine? Might just be me though.

 

I wish I could post right now! Since his "first draft" wig looks okayish now from certain angles. It may still be salvageable if I add a few more wefts to it. Plus, since you're a fan of other people who are willing to drop a good chunk of change on Kaito things, I could post my "shrine" He's totally my all time favorite too. If it's Kaito, I try to have it!

I dont mean to hijack your thread, but I would love to see your shrine. Here is mine from a while back:

I did um and ah a lot about going the obitsu route, but the smart doll body has a lot of features I like even though it's going to cost me a lot more. I did think it looked too muscular at first, but I've since fallen in love with Eiji's face.

I think the Smart Doll route will be worth it. Eiji definitely looks great. I've heard really great things about the Smart Dolls. I can't really judge on quality or anything since this is my first "real" doll. I haven't spent enough time with my Kaito to know of any flaws or what I like or dislike about the body yet. Well...one thing that gets me is the Obitsu's legs are SUPER squeaky. I can't really see something like the Smart Dolls doing that.

He looks great so far! I'm quite impressed. I usually dont like the look of yarn wigs but it looks like you've done a good job on it. (As for me, Danny has now confirmed he plans to do a blue wig 'ASAP' so I'm currently overjoyed about that). Those eyes really are lovely! I'm tempted to get some too now...

Good luck on the clothes, should be a challenge.

 

Regarding the squeakiness, it's likely just because its new. Smart Dolls are also pretty squeaky when they're new - I see this in unboxing videos. When the dolls are new the joints are pretty stiff. However the stiffness is a good thing - it means they hold the poses you put them on instead of flopping around.

 

(Also, nice collection yourself. I kind of regret not getting the cheerleader Kaito myself... and nice custom ones, too!

As for the 'handkerchief', it's actually a hand-towel, and it's a doujin item. I picked it up from Comic City (doujin event) in Fu kuoka back when I lived there. (edit- Apparently the name of this Japanese prefecture was autocensored...I laughed a bit) I just use it for decoration, though. The large keyring is also doujin goods - it's actually wooden, which is neat.)

 

Sister Kyoya also mentiond maybe making a Kaito of her own at some point, so we just might end up with 3 different Kaitos on here.

Thank you! I'm glad to hear Danny will be making a blue wig! That's great news. If you do get tempted by these eyes, I got them from Dollfieworld since it seems BRG isn't selling at the moment.

 

I totally wouldn't think the Smart Dolls squeak! Well, at least that's normal then. And that is true, this body does hold poses well.

 

(Cheerleader Kaito seems to always be around on Mandarake for around retail price if the urge ever strikes you. I weep for all the Kaito doujins and doujin goods I will never own. They seem really cool to own!)

 

And oh boy, we should all have a Kaito party! That'll be fun to see. The more Kaito, the better!

Totally random (and I'm sooo sorry if I'm wrong omg lol), but I think I may know you from pkmncollectors? It was quite a while ago, but did you ever get the Kaito Taeyang doll or outfit you were interested in?

 

Either way, it's nice to see that you'll be making a 1/3 sized Kaito using a 60cm obitsu! I'm another of those who are waffling between using a 60cm obitsu or Eiji for my male doll. My guy has the distinct problem that he not only should be a bit more muscular than the current Eiji but also has to be just a bit shorter than a 60cm obitsu. It is possible to shorten 60cm obitsus(I've done it to mine), but it's another thing altogether to add muscles that aren't there in the first place LOL and I really wouldn't want to do any drastic mods to Eiji if I could help it. Needless to say it's easier to focus on my girl first and hope the right guy base comes along in the future xD

I use mikumikudance quite a bit but I don't think that really counts. xD The Diamond Dust outfit would look amazing. I also looove the wig you made, even though it's not completely accurate. It looks so fluffy!

I should probably update with his hair. In this picture, I had it combed down nice and tame. The thing I do like about yarn wigs is how cooperative they are with "anime hair physics" So I have styled it a little bit more since this picture. Since I'm likely going to make another wig anyway, I've been messing with styling and texturizing it more so the next wig will (hopefully) do exactly what I want it to this time. I think my main issue with this one is that my weft placement was off a bit. But even if it doesn't look the best...you're right on that too, he's super fluffy.

It's great to see a Vocaloid custom. I'm planning to make a JBF Luka in the near future but after the announcement of the Kagamine twins I think it's possible that they will make make DD Luka too!

Oh yay, so it is you! It's good to see your Kaito collection is coming along nicely.

 

Modding can get pretty messy for sure. xD I imagine it *would* be possible to add muscles to harder vinyl parts like the arms and legs using epoxy putty or other materials, but the chest and abdominals are way too soft for it to hold. Of course, it would take a lot of anatomy study and sculpting skills to make it look really good. The most I ever did was use epoxy putty to somewhat hide the surgery lines on my girl's thighs... and in the end it looks a bit... potato-like even though she's a lot more stable (and maybe even a bit curvier? LOL) as a result. The body still has a lot of charm and sentimental value to me even though I decided to go with a different base for the character, though now I'm at a loss as to who should use it. ^^"""

 

I've read a bit about wig-making but the thought of making it myself still sounds intimidating to me! xD I'll be looking forward to your updates! A picture of your current Kaito would be nice though I understand if you'd rather wait to finish the new wig first. ^^ I was actually thinking that a mohair wig would be good for my girl(also in my avatar.. though I need to update her outfit) because her hair is so fluffy, thick, and can be quite anime LOL

It's sort of funny, I totally think doing anything with epoxy on a doll sounds more intimidating! Maybe it's because I've never used epoxy before. But yeah, you're most likely right, that area probably wouldn't be too good for sculpting in.

 

I find the wig making process isn't necessarily hard or anything...it's just very time consuming. And a bit tiring for the wrist from having to brush yarn out. But I don't think that step is included for mohair anyway. That's why I'm still being lazy about it. It takes me roughly 11ish hours, so I'm sort of kicking myself for not cutting this one properly. I'm still sort of trying to save it though, I'd rather make 2 more wefts than make the whole thing over. It does feel really cool to make one yourself though, if the urge ever strikes you, it's definitely an experience!

 

I'm debating starting a thread over in photos, since I'm pretty sure it's okay to. I saw some other boys in there a few pages back, so I think I'm good to. I just have to take some nice ones now that he also has his temporary outfit. That's the hard part. I'm a huge amateur when it comes to photos.

Update:

 

So part of his actual outfit got here today. It was REALLY fast for mail from China. Only took a week!

 

 

The shirt doesn't fit too well in certain places. Depending on how it looks with the coat when it gets here, I may need to take it in in some spots. Sleeves are a bit too long too. But this isn't anything unfixable.

 

The shoes are also a bit big too...but it was a sacrifice I was willing to make for how accurate they are. I just need to change the white part to a light blue now.

 

Now I'm just waiting on the coat and pants, so hopefully those will get here very soon too!

Oooh, the wig looks great! I only wish you could get clearer pics eventually. But as progress shots they do the job.

I wish I could get some clearer shots too, all my cameras are just old and outdated. My phone's camera sucks, the ones taken today were taken with my actual camera, but that thing is almost 5 years old now(and it wasn't anything fancy when I got it either. I won it in a raffle.)

 

For the next round of progress shots, I'll have to try my other phone(the screen is cracked up and unrepairable so I no longer use it, but it's a more recent phone and there's no damage to the camera). Maybe that one will be slightly clearer. Since I'm not big into photography, I'm not inclined to spend a couple hundred on a camera. I admit it.

 

The only part I can't stand aesthetically on the obitsu60 are the knees, to be honest. I like the mobility, but I think they look pretty bad. Especially when bent. So shorts definitely would be out for this body, IMO. But yeah, I think it's fine when he has clothes on. I'm now questioning the leg length too though. My boyfriend saw him for the first time the other day and he goes "It's nice, but he has like...giraffe legs. They're super long" I haven't been able to un-see it since. But hey, for the price, I am not complaining. I still like this body a lot.

He looks really awesome so far I can't wait to see how he turns out! I want to make a Gakupo custom sometime in the future! Let's hope people start making male sculpts in the future as I can't use Eiji for all my guys, and none of volks' stuff would work for him as far as I know.

Thank you! Gakupo would be super cool to see too. I'll definitely hope for more male sculpts so maybe that'll be a reality one day. The more options the better! I'm glad I got lucky with Kaito's Project Diva model being a relatively close match to the 07 head in a lot of ways. Otherwise, I don't know what I'd use.

That would suck. And the 07 works surprisingly well for him! I actually never thought it worked that great for guys most of the time. Cheeks always seemed too poofy and the face itself too short but it does work very well for Kaito! Make sure he gets plenty of ice cream!

I really want to support Danny more, but the freaking flat face syndrome his sculpts get is so bad it's a wonder Eiji turned out alright! Also I've been trying to limit myself to characters I know and love and OC's. Even with just that I'm already looking at a huge collection.

I'm pretty glad that Eiji didn't end up being too tempting to me. I know the feeling of huge collections too, since I collect a million things. With the addition of Kaito to my room, I think I am officially 100% out of space for anything more.

Yep! I know the feeling since my house isn't the most spacious. At least, not suitable space for my girls. I've got the dresser in the corner of my room but everything else is either my bed or bathed in sunlight which obviously isn't good for them. I definitely feel like I'm gonna hit that point where I have to work out a way to expand storage for them. I'm either going to have to see how useful the spare room would be or add nearby shelves.

I've been waiting for someone to post a KAITO custom and of course someone does it while I haven't visited the site for a while (lol). So cute so far

I'm quite a bit late responding here, but he looks great so far! I especially like his shirt.

 

Not sure if you know about this(relatively simple) mod, but in case you think the shirts you buy him are a little too long for his torso or if you want him to be a bit taller, you *can* extend the spine part of his inner frame a little bit. At most you'd only be able to get 1-1.5cm more in height, but it's an option anyway. xD

 

I also think that the legs on the 60cm dolls seem way too long. xD When I first got mine I thought that the only types of characters that would work were the sailor scouts At least you can cut them down if they are really too bothersome but it's not for the faint of heart. ^^""" ..modding the thighs is especially evil *SHUDDERS*

 

Tbh the nicer knees and body proportions with great mobility is why I'm switching to an obitsu50(well.. Azone AZO2 specifically haha) instead. Now if any of the big doll companies can make a good looking guy to be their counterpart that would be great but I'm not holding my breath lol
