Size could be a problem if the doll has to wear a protective cap underneath, but if you don't have to worry about staining then 8-9" should be alright.

The problem is that Crobi doesn't have 8-9" wigs, they have 8" wigs and 9-10" wigs. The 9-10" wigs are huge on Sakuya/Yaya/Melty, but fit nicely on Miku & Rin. The 8" CRWML-93 wig is a very tight fit on Yaya & Sakuya. It sort of fit on Rin but it looked completely wrong because the bangs were spread too wide. On Miku it fit with a LOT of struggling, and looked ok, but it'd be better to get her a 9-10" wig.

I still have no idea why they're not using the little hair clips (as Wolf so lovingly called jaws of death) with wefts attached since you can remove and re-position them for easier wig care. You get fuller pony/twintails with them too. My only guess is that Volks view DDs more as figures and not for playing with, so they expect you to just dress them up and sit them on a shelf? I thought it was industry standard to have the little hair clips.

Overall both Rin and Takane's default outfit quality is pretty disappointing to me.

I don't get it either. Then again, I don't get why they don't bother to make sure the clothes for their dolls don't stain, or why they can't bother to knot the threads of anything they sew.

Sadly the base dolls are so good that I'll probably still buy them, like Baldylox, I am a total volks hoe at this point, mostly because there really is only one competitor and that is Danny Choo. As much as I respect him and hold in a much higher regard than I do volks because of the hard work and love he puts into his work, the lack of variety/features in his sculpts makes it so that it would be quite difficult to make OC's with most of them, and that is harder to work with than clothes/wig problems.

Buttons fell off my rin's sweater the moment I took it out of the package. I managed to get some decent shots though of the fullset, here's the best one I took I think.

Where darkness lies...

I agree with you guys. Volks sculpts have my hear u_u the smart dolls are cute and all. But they don't capture me as much. I might end up getting a few though, because I want some tan girls and guys, and sadly Danny is the only one offering that at this point. /3 I wish volks would do tan as a standard color : [

Hi~

I have this ForU wig https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=525526778191&toSite=main and the quality of the hair is really nice and soft, but since the ponytail is sew, some hair detached and had to be cut since they make the doll look like a crazy cat lady. The cap itself is super black and stained a bit my Mariko's forehead when I put it on only for a few minutes, also the cap is quite rigid, but since is a ponytail desing it may not be the same with the Rin wig.

I bought it from another taobao shop that had it in stock since it seems they work only by preorders x3

I hope this is useful for some of you ^^

Thanks for the info! On some of the wigs with detachable parts, I imagine the base could be soaked/gently washed to get some of the dye out of the inner cap. Might not work for the Rin wig since I believe the base wig is pretty long, but for shorter ones it's probably worth a try.

I've found that wigs with more rigid shapes (like ponytails and whatnot) tend to be stiffer and tighter and just generally more of a pain to deal with. I'm hoping that the ones with clips will allow for a greater ease of use. I have a Licht wig with a clip in ponytail and their cap is really nice and stretchy so *crosses fingers* I hope the ForU ones turn out that way!

I put one light wig from ForU as well as the one that Wolf and I were talking about in my cart at my shopping service. I asked them about the Rin wig but I haven't gotten my order confirmation yet so I don't know what the story on it right now.

This wig is either a clip on or For U threw in an extra wig as a bonus: https://world.taobao.com/item/20224629506.htm?fromSite=main

At least based on the photos my proxy provided of what they received. The didn't take the wig out of the hair net so it's hard to tell for sure.

They also included a comb and some other bit I can't make out. I can post more info on the wig once I get it, but stuff heading to me from China tends to go through LA and customs there usually takes awhile.

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

Oh yeah, that wig is definitely a clip on, you can see the clips in some of the photos and they show you what the base looks like without them on. You should be able to wash that short base without damaging it pretty easily. I'm assuming it'll have a black or dark brown inner cap so I figure I'll just soak it for a little in some lukewarm-warmish water and hope some of the dye (if there is any) diffuses out. Then it's cotton wig cap time for extra safety.

Edit: TBring got back to me, the ForU Rin wig will be regular stock after the preorder period ends!

They also told me that the ForU wig that Wolf and I ordered has "less red parts" currently. I may take mine out of my order and wait until the Rin wig comes out in hopes that they fix it, cause I really liked the little red bits. Wolf, did you see any red in the pictures your service sent you?

So far the nicest looking (have yet to review actual quality) and closest to the original wig I've found are from ForU. They have a couple different shades of silver and a few have the little intake valves. You'd just need to put curls in if you wanted them.

I got a light tent recently so here's some Rin. Now it's Takane that's proving really difficult to photograph. Her eyes are so pretty but they come out so dark compared to the rest of her. It's like I can't get the exposure right because she's so pale but her eye region just looks super underexposed when the rest of her is exposed properly.

26450476332_3c783404b8.jpg

26269926660_08299b8052.jpg

Compared to the best Takane attempt... orz.

I also found a defect in one of her eyes. Thanks, macro lenses. You always point out flaws I didn't know existed.

Oh no Wolf... Poor Rin and her fat head. That one that takes the clips looks pretty nice on her in my opinion. What part of it did you think was weird? Was it something that just trimming or styling could fix?

I just ordered 4 wigs (2 from ForU and 2 from Lich). I'll throw them all on her and let you know how they fit once they arrive. I also picked up two new pairs of eyes. She has 22s in right now but I think they're kinda small, so I got 24s in different shape. With my luck they'll end up too big. ;A;

Rin is definitely a trial and error doll for me, but I also find that I'm having the most fun with her because she's a bit difficult.

I think you mean Foo. This is the second time I've been confused with Foo which doesn't offend me, but might offend Foo.

They key with photographing their eyes is to get light in them. I haven't really found a good way to light just the eyes, but one trick I do like for lighting from the front is to bounce flash off a white reflector focused on the front of the doll. This creates much softer light than direct flash, and if the reflector is angled correctly it will light the eyes well. The drawback is you get very diffuse light across the front of the doll, so if you want to have dramatic shadows it ruins it.

Oh my god, oops. You both take really nice photos and I keep confusing who took what, my mistake (and apologies!).

Yeah, I've thought about maybe trying to shine a diffused flashlight just in the eye area? That would also ruin any sort of dramatic lighting. I guess there's always setting up with a tripod and bracketing and merging photos together to get lighting from multiple shots? No amount of retouching can fix Takane's eyes to my liking.

No worries. Foo is the better photographer which is why I wasn't offended.

I can't explain this very well, but one of the issues with using a flashlight is you can impart an odd color cast to the photo's where the light from the flashlight falls. This is especially true with LED lights which have very abnormal coverage of the electromagnetic spectrum. I saw a chart in a flash photography book once that made sense out of it, but I have no way to put the images into words.

It's very hard to correct for the color cast they impart to part of your image when mixed with other types of light. If they are the sole light source it's a different story. LED lighting for photography has really taken off in the last few years.

In portraiture they will sometimes use a white card or reflector placed in front of the model resting on a fulcrum. The photographer can instruct the model to press down on the card a certain amount to bounce light from a spotlight into their eyes. What's hard to me about Dollfie is the scale of the model. Lights and modifiers that can be used to illuminate part of a person illuminate the entire doll. Granted I probably just need to fiddle around more and find tricks to use for Dollfie.

That makes a ton of sense as I've tried to do something like that before on a smaller scale and I was never pleased with the colors. As much as I love photography the majority of my endeavors are trial and error with what I can find around the house >w<. Thanks for the explanation! I probably just need an extra lamp or to get a smallish reflector. I've hesitated on reflectors for so long since it's not like you can have the doll manipulate it for you. Wouldn't that be convenient!

As for size... I wonder, would covering part of a larger lamp work to scale it down? I can give it a try later on to see what, if anything, it does.

There are a few devices that are used to modify light like barn-doors, and snoots. It also helps to have a softbox and a diffusion umbrella. You can get all of the above for use with speedlights, and some of them are pretty cheap. With that said I would say don't skimp on diffusion umbrellas. The amount of wear they take you pretty much get what you pay for.

You might find this helpful: http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html

That blog has some tips on making light modifiers using stuff like cereal boxes. He also has advice for putting together a low cost lighting kit.

To be on somewhat on topic my Crobi wigs arrived the other day. I am pretty pleased with the quality, but I haven't tried any on Rin yet. I have a feeling the fit on her isn't going to be good. I got a limited color 8" wig for my Kos-Mos, and it fit her head perfectly. 8-9 inch wigs are usually so loose on Kos-Mos that they tend to slide right off her head. The wig itself looks gorgeous on her, and I am super happy with it. I highly recommend their wigs.

I am almost certain they are not heat resistant fiber, but the near-boiling hot water trick works like a charm. I would say the quality is above Volks and Licht, but not quite as good as ForMyDoll. Granted my FMD wigs are heat resistant. I don't have any Leeke wigs to compare to.

The ForU wigs that I got for Takane should arrive around the time she does.

Adding to what Wolf said, you can also get an adjustable reflector that attaches directly to the flash, like the flashbender which can also be used as a more flexible snoot. That allows you to more freely direct the light where you want it and doesn't require an extra set of hands that you might otherwise need with a more traditional reflector.

Oh no Wolf... Poor Rin and her fat head. That one that takes the clips looks pretty nice on her in my opinion. What part of it did you think was weird?

You mean the powder brown one from before? My gripe with it was that it's not sitting properly was the wig should like it does on Sakuya, so a 9-10" version should sit better. Unfortunately the thing is that Rin's head is weirdly wide.

If you look at Crobi's original product photos, the wig actually has a chunk of hair that's supposed to come down from the left and swoosh to the side. That doesn't work very well on DD heads because they're more round, and it ends up swooshing across their face. With the 8" wigs I can pull them back a bit and they end up looking like nice bangs,

XWNN1KI.jpg

Miku looks good in just about anything but those green eyes clash. Sakuya's wearing a Little Monica wig there.

I bought a pair of 24mm eyes from Lizanna, the Moonlight series in Aquamarine, and tried those out last night. They didn't work out because Rin's eyes are really wide but kind of short, so most of the eye design shown is the middle of it, and they just looked too black when there wasn't light shining on them like an insect. Today I readjusted the eyes while the sun was still up so I could get a better look, and I raised them. That cuts off the top of the design (the little white highlight is lost on one eye), but they look much better.

JCS8paw.jpg

Kinda,

M2ukXzY.jpg

The wig wax on her default wig's been running on empty for a while, but I thought showing these eyes with this wig would make a good point of reference. There's still too much black, which is the opposite problem of her default eyes (-‸ლ)

The only other eyes I have right now are the Senbonzakura eyes, which might work. I'll wait until daylight tomorrow to do it (~_~')

About lighting, I think I mentioned this somewhere in the photography section but I use two remote flashes, one of them is on a mini-light stand usually set to bounce behind it off of some wall (whatever seems to help) and the other has a light modifier that produces a very diffuse light. Even in daylight, using a remote flash with the light modifier helps a lot,

25913913623_a3ddd12a8b_z.jpg

Melty V by bodolza, on Flickr

The light modifier I use is a Rogue Flashbender XL with a black surface attachment (well the reverse side of the black thing is sliver, if you take it off you show the white underneath). The black thing results in this wonderful wall of diffused light. It's really inefficient because the flash needs to fire at very high power to be useful, but it works great. I find this much, much better than the softbox attachment.

lqiTfdt.jpg

It doesn't sound like it's supposed to be used like that, but whatever, it's great.

That's basically what i am experiencing with that wig on my Shion (Sheryl Nome Head). The bangs pretty much cover half of her face, and are resisting any attempt to tame them. I haven't tried it on my SD yet to see how the fit differs.

I've read about the flashbender in a book on flash photography, but I don't have one. What I have been doing is putting a softbox on the flash, and then pointing the flash at a piece of white mat board I use as a bounce card. The resulting light is very soft. I think you are getting better results with the flashbender though.

I'm probably going to change my Rin vs. Wigs thread into a Customizing Rin thread, once I get some more eyes to try out. But for now here's how she looks like with Miku's Senbonzakura eyes,

She looks like Miku now Also, these eyes are super glossy. Oh ya, the wig did stain her head a little all around, but you can't even see it in this photo. I'm in no rush to fix it. Hopefully I'll be able to put together something better than her default wig so I don't have to use it anymore.

And here's Mikurin in her default wig,

She looks beautiful with those brown eyes, but I think in Rin's case she looks better with brightly colored eyes. I think Rin's gaze should be a bit piercing, so while she looks good with brown eyes she looks less like Rin to me.

I have a pair of moonlight in aquamarine in 22mm I'll try them on her sometime in the next week or so.

Foo, I really love those eyes! I almost bought some in a similar color and now I regret not ordering them. I think they'd look really good with a blond wig! I really like them with the wig that isn't her default as well, it brings out the purple in them.

Thanks for the photography links, everyone! I'll be busy reading them all. Sorry we got in trouble /)_(\

Until I get her looking like Rin again, with eyes and an appropriate wig, I want to keep her out of her default set so I don't ruin it. A button already came off that I have to sew back on (~_~#)

So I just put some clothes on her and, well you can see for yourself.
