PrettyCranium Posted October 25, 2011 I was wondering if anyone had any tips on straightening a curly wig. I have a Leeke wig in a limited colour, but I basically can't use it because it is so curly that it frizzes and messes up at the slightest provocation. Is it possible to straighten it without damaging it?
scripple Posted October 25, 2011 I understand with curly wigs you have to be careful when washing them to let them dry curled up or they tend to lose their curls. So you could try getting it wet and letting it hang in such a way that gravity pulls against the curls. Repeat that a few times and see what happens. I've also heard you can use steam to loosen them, but with that you have to be very careful as if you get it too hot you'll definitely damage it. I think a lot of Leeke wigs are made from heat resistant fibers though which are supposed to let you use low heat to style them. They list on their site which ones are. Note that I've not tried either of these, so proceed at your own risk. Check out my new DollFun website. Share your own doll photos with free image hosting. mitsuki Posted October 25, 2011 I haven't tried straightening either, but I have heard of the techniques scripple described. I have also heard of someone using a flat iron or hair straightener on the lowest setting to get a desired style.
Suzuna Posted October 25, 2011 To straighten Aria's bangs when I rooted them, I just poured boiling water over her head. It's more gentle than a straightener.

Let me get this right you poured BOILing water over her head. Remind me to never ask for a hair cut.
Poofiemus Posted October 26, 2011 Well, since many companies aren't straightforward as to exactly which synthetic fibers they use, I'd play it a little safer and use water that's at more of a mild simmer; if it's saran, boiling is fine, but nylon has a tendency to frizz when it gets too hot too quickly. Still, the basic principle is the same: warm to hot water, style, then consider pouring cold over it to make sure it sticks. If the simmer doesn't cut it, then I'd move to a true boil. Better safe than frizzy! In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.
PrettyCranium Posted October 26, 2011 Thanks for the suggestions. The wig is for Kanu, the Leeke limited colour royal cadet blue. I have some other wigeon order, so I will probably wait to see what they look like on her before I try straightening the other wig -- though on the other hand, the curly wig is probably ot something I could use right one given the curliness. I still feel weird about potentially damaging the wig, though!
dreamcore Posted October 26, 2011 Have you tried using wig oil to help it keeps its curls without frizzing, rather than removing the curls altogether? I've read that it helps a lot, and am going to try it myself when my wig oil comes in from Volks, since I have a few unmanageable curly wigs myself.
Saluli Posted October 26, 2011 when I need to do this on a cosplay wig, I do the following: * put the wig on a styrofoam ball and pin it* Put a stick in the ball, and the stick inside a bottle.* detangle the wig with a metal comb* spray silicon* slowly pour hot (but not boiling)water while combing it flat. * let the wig dry* repeat until you got the effect You can also get interesting result with a steam machine (don´t know the name in english, the one you use for flatten clothes) Summon ritual is over. And finally complete.

Let me get this right you poured BOILing water over her head. Remind me to never ask for a hair cut. You don't even want to know how I rooted her bangs in the first place! (hint: it involved a very, very long needle!) I would not recommend a hair cut from me either. Yes, like Poofie said, if you aren't sure you can use water at a low simmer. If it's a heat resistant wig, go all out with the boiling if your intent is stick-straight hair.
