Mugi Posted December 29, 2015 Hello, today I received my long awaited gift from my BF containing a Wig from Volks which I looked for very long. It's this one: SD Hair Wig Long Ringlet Pigtails/Choco-Purple (W-133-choco) Well, it didn't arrive in that shape... the right bang is just weirdly flappy hanging down and the left one is kind of neat styled in a sliiightly curl shaped form. (Not the twin tails, they're ok!) I don't own a hair straightener nor have I access to one.. This bugs me so much I'm going to hate that wig, If I don't correct it soon... I had a similar problem with an ebay wig, but pouring water on it and blow it in form with a hair dryer didn't work... Did someone here had a similar problem? What should I do? I did google and search the forum but didn't find anything. Sorry if this has been posted already, please link me to it then!
Cauldroness Posted December 29, 2015 The water method only works if you use boiling or near-boiling water. If it's not hot enough to burn you, it's not hot enough to work on a wig! Also, you have to use a LOT of it, like 3 large teakettles' worth, poured slowly down the hair. I've never heard of using a blow dryer...? You can use a regular clothes iron (tuck the hair between two wet towels, then run the iron OVER the towel, do not let the iron touch the hair directly). Mugi Posted December 30, 2015 Thank you for your reply Cauldroness! It's really just the one bang on the right, I don't want to ruin her twin tails >_<
foo Posted December 30, 2015 FYI, often you have to use water wax to keep wigs styled, https://www.volks.co.jp/miku/special_advice01/ I'm not sure if you're talking about the same kind of issue, but generally product shots for wigs are styled using something. Mugi Posted December 30, 2015 My BF bought me water wax with the order but that doesn't solve the Problem. Going to edit a picture to this post maybe it's more clear then. =) As you can see, it's just "hanging" down, not like the other side, and it doesn't take any form.. It looks like it hasn't been styled at all like the other side.
hatchetsforhands Posted December 30, 2015 I would use a blow dryer on high heat and style it with a toothbrush. I did that to fix this same problem in a different wig I own. If not, use boiling hot water and a Cotton Swab to apply boiling water to the area and style it with your fingers (without hurting yourself). I've done that too with success, but you have to work fast.
Cauldroness Posted December 31, 2015 If you want them both straight, pour boiling water down the curled side. If you want them both curled, wrap the straight one around a large cylinder (like a big cup, an empty soup can, or a large hair roller), secure the hair in place (use tin foil, bobby pins, or anything else that's heat-safe), and dip just that section in near-boiling water for 20-30 seconds. Let air dry. It will dry with a slight curl. Doll Photos & Doll Jewelry Sales: Follow me on Instagram!
BeyondTime Posted December 31, 2015 I've needed to straighten my Sakura Shinguji's ponytail and one of the tails on the side of her face since she arrived. Is the near-boiling water method safe on Volks wigs? I thought they weren't heat resistant, so I haven't tried anything like that to fix the slight curl to parts of her hair that should be straight. Of all the dollfie I have Sakura has the cutest face, so it's really bugged me that the hair framing it has an unnatural hang, and I'd really like to fix it. Cauldroness Posted December 31, 2015 Yup, the boiling water method is specifically for non-heat-resistant wigs. The "heat resistant" label means the wig fiber can come in direct contact with a heating element (like a curling iron or flat iron) without melting. For example, I've used flat irons directly on my heat-resistant Leeke wigs with no problems. For non-heat-resistant wigs, the most important thing is to NEVER let them come in contact with a heating element. If you're boiling water in a pot or tea kettle, NEVER let the hair come in contact with the metal. If you're using an iron, ALWAYS make sure there's a wet towel between the iron and the hair and make sure the towel NEVER dries out. If you're worried about a wig (it seems fragile / irreplaceable / you've never tried this technique before), use water that is actively steaming but not boiling. You should have a good amount of steam rising from the surface but no visible bubbling. Then, if you don't get the results you want, you can increase the amount of heat until it starts working. Some wigs are more stubborn than others. I've had some wigs where hot water from the tap provided enough heat for styling; others that required buckets and buckets and buckets of boiling water. Oh, and one last note: Do NOT blow dry wigs if you use the boiling water method. Let them air dry. Blow drying can make them go all frizzy. Most wigs will be a little stiff after air drying, but a quick brush will make them smooth and silky again. Doll Photos & Doll Jewelry Sales: Follow me on Instagram! Mugi Posted January 1, 2016 Thank you really much Cauldroness and hatchetsforhands! I cut a bit of her wig because her wefts weren't symetric, which bothered me even more. And it's a bit better styled now! Not perfect, but I can live with it.
BeyondTime Posted January 1, 2016 I used the hot water method on Sakura's wig and it appears to have worked like a charm. I'll wait till it dries before I say for certain, but I don't think it took more than 2 cups of near boiling water from my electric kettle. The wig wasn't harmed at all, and it did seem a bit stiff right afterwards. I took before pictures of it, so once I am sure it's going to stay straight I'll post some before and after shots so you can see the difference. The tails that run alongside her face are very similar to the ones on the wig you are having issues with. I was able to use the spout on the kettle to direct a stream of water just on each one, and it didn't take much to straighten them. Thanks for the tip Cauldroness. BeyondTime Posted January 2, 2016 Here are the before images. As you can see the side tails have an uneven curvature. In the anime Sakura's hair does have a slight curl at the end, but the uneveness is bothersome and it's a bit too much curl. Also the end of her ponytail looks she's having a bad hair day. After the hot water treatment it's much much better. The side tails are both nice and even, and the ponytail has a natural hang. I was even able to use the hot water to clean up some frizzy hair on the side tails by carefully aiming the water. It dried really quickly too. I put the wig onto an upright bottle of saké so the tails could hang straight down while they dried. Foo is correct in saying you could use water wax to tame the frizzyness, and to create spiky anime style hair for photoshoots. The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin?
