finnleo Posted January 5, 2016 In an effort to actually make things this year, and not just photograph stuff today's project came about when I got something that could be very much called and antique, and I started pondering about how cool it would be if it could be in some way shrunk into doll size... The main item remains a project to be, but one item related to it could be possible after some ebay hunting. But how it all came to be was actually me investing in a sketchy piece of equipment that turned my hand router into a table router, so sketchy or not, I was now able to produce certain profiles of wood with less chance of chopping my fingers off in the process. and voila, the first pieces of the main frame came to be: wood086 Not the prettiest of angle joints, but it worked ... wood087 At this point a minor confession of having resorted to the naughty deed of using epoxy to gluing things together this time around, but I was in a bit of a rush, but despite the ability to move on at a quicker pace it did come to bite me in the butt later on... Amusingly this frame would require another frame around it, and some measuring and fiddling later I managed to produce this little number with an alternate means of joints. wood088 The main body of the box required four pieces ... wood089 Crude box is crude: wood090 All things wood ready, and waiting for coloring: wood091 Now at this point my plans took a bit of a twist to the more humorous side... since per original plans the main body should have been painted grey, and the inside frame satin black... but since I have been dipping into the DLC of Bioshock infinite, I thought about perhaps making it a bit more old than it should be... hence stains and varnish came into play.. wood092 So it was my tried and true recipe of water based stain underneath, and a few coats of oil based varnish with a quick sanding in between to even it all out a bit. Although as I mentioned about the epoxy, it does like to soak into the wood, and will make the staining a bit more interesting where-ever it was been smeared. wood093 Now for the guts of the thing... This sub 18$ 5" reverse camera screen off ebay, which I gutted for this dictated the size of the inner frame, and also the outside frame. it is a 16:9 rated one, but fortunately it has a more period friendly 4:3 setting built into it.. wood094 Some hot glue later we have the beauty shots... and while it does look better than expected in real life... the screen itself is a bit unfotogenic... or I just need to figure out a better camera/light setting. wood095 Some wooden leg humor to prove its the actual item running the screen... wood096 Speaking of daleks.. now that I managed to figure out how to feed this thing something else than just C64 screens, Eliza with some period entertainment... kotori071 kotori072 Now then... what next..
