I have been lurking for years before deciding to join. I'm a HUGE PVC figure collector (I have spent ridiculous money and am proud of my collection) BUT have been really interested in starting up a doll collection for the last 2-3 years. My only and biggest problem is being able to buy them. I find it really hard to find certain types of dolls to buy. I know a little about mandarake (but there are not very many on there) and sites like shoppingmalljapan (that proxy for websites) but even though I have been attempting to buy a doll (VMF50, Angel Philia in particular) I have had zero luck

 

If anyone can help me get started on locating and buying I would be thrilled! I cannot wait to have my very own doll and contribute and be a part of this community.

Yahoo Japan is your best place for range. Mandrake often has a good few. Just keep in mind if you spend over $1000 you will be stung with duty/customs/GST which can add quite a chunk to the overall cost, so keep your buys under ~80k yen, and pay close attention to proxy fees and shipping costs. Probably safer to avoid anything over 70k yen.

I don't know anything about VMF or Angel dolls, but I imagine they're in the other doll categories on YJA. Browse it with chrome for its auto-translation and it's a fairly painless process. I use buyee as my proxy since they're very simple and essentially integrated to YJA (a button on there to use it) plus they just lowered their fees, so that's a big help.

Do you know if you can buy (via a proxy site) from real art project? I can't translate the page and shoppingmalljapan say none of their dolls are in stock.

That is just some third party site. Just use Google Chrome's autotranslation and browse the Japanese site. Any third party is going to end up complicating matters.

 

I have no idea about other brands of dolls; I collect DDs, and this site is dedicated to them. There is the off-topic dolls forum where you could ask about other types of dolls. I know some people here collect some other types of dolls, so someone should be able to answer questions regarding them.
