That's such a cute story! Yellow was my favourite song in project diva 2nd/extend and I used to play it with Kaito a lot.

It feels like only yesterday that figma was announced for me! I was through the roof about it cos I waited YEARS for one ;-; but I'm glad it took a while to come out cos the quality is so high compared to the first Miku figma and the Rin/Len ones (honestly i think the Rin one is awful...)

 

I think you've done a good job with him but I also like that he's given you confidence. I wish I could say the same...seeing how much you've done makes me want to take a crack at faceups again though. Happy birthday to your Kaito! Made me realize how quickly my one's is coming up

 

Aw man, that wait would've killed me too. I was just a filthy bandwagon jumper lol. I wanted a figma because I loved the concept of them, so I was just browsing through characters they'd released to find one I wanted. The Kaito figma had already been out by the time I found it. He won for having blue hair...that gets me every time.

 

And thanks! That boost in confidence was really something I needed. It's sort of carried over to my other art hobbies too, and that's been nice since I had fallen into such a slump about them before all this. If you do decide to take another go at faceups, I hope you at least have fun! I think that's what keeps me going on them. I still find it to be a good time. Well, most of the time, anyway. Right now, Miles is over here giving me a hard time with his face...so he won't be done for a while...

 

The time does fly though, right? They grow up so fast.

So FINALLY I can show Miles a bit. Even if I don't consider him totally done at the moment.

 

 

Look at this little troublemaker(stealing mostly Kaito's clothes too...only the hoodie is his.) Skin problems aside, guess who also decided he wanted to be headless during this photo? The neck piece is killing me. It keeps coming off. Apparently I can fix it by finding a longer screw though, so I need to do that.

 

I admit I'm having a really rough start with this one. It's a good thing I like the character I've given him so much...because I'm not typically this patient with my OCs. The fact that he had such a strong presence as a character in the first place is why he even got a physical form over the others. (I have a family of quirky robot boys, but if I made one, I'd have to make all 4 of them. Can't break up a family. Not a project I'm ready to do.)

 

Even if he's causing problems...Miles is just too genuine of a character for me to mad at for too long. For everything that goes wrong, I can sort of picture him pouting and going "But I didn't mean to do any of that stuff! So you can't be mad at me! That wouldn't make any sense!" ...and that's true. I admire his confidence in these things at the very least. I'm sure the frustration will blow over in no time. I'm going to try maybe sewing him a Santa cape or something cute for Christmas and then I'm sure I can snap out of it.

Aww, with a face that adorable I can see him getting away with being a little troublemaker. I also want to see him with Kaito. He's in normal skin right? The color match looks pretty good imo, though now that I have a SWS head I think that's a slightly better match to Obitsu white over NS.

 

Installing the neckpiece is such a pain huh. I remember struggling for a while with my sq lab head.. orz I was able to use the screw that's already in the neck piece somehow but a longer one would make the ordeal a lot more tolerable. Now that I have new heads I'll be going through this again too and I'm not looking forward to it at all lol;;;

etoile: I'm glad it looks natural! It's cutely baggy. I like it since it really gives that feel of a kid who's wearing his older brother's hand-me-downs.

 

Torino: I have to come with a good post for that one! Kaito and Miles haven't been formally introduced yet. These two are literally worlds apart...so I think they'll be a very odd pair. Miles is a wizard in-training...robots are definitely not a thing where he comes from! I foresee shenanigans in their future because of it.

 

jazijaz: Aw, thank you! I'm glad his personality shines through. His skin color thing doesn't really show up in photos, luckily. And I do photoshop all my photos for better color balance, so it evened it out. It looks like he went and got a tan...but only on his face when you see him in person lol!

 

elianti: He is NS, but a funky one. You can even see it in this photo if you look hard enough. His face is dark, and he has discoloration near his mouth, unfortunately. So Miles will definitely be getting a new head at some point later next year(if I don't go through with a crazier plan of mine...)

 

Miles has like...a ring smack in the middle of his face. It came out when I was sanding. It's lighter than the rest of his skin in the middle, and it has a dark ring around it. Looks like a patch that one would get if you accidentally spilled bleach on a dark fabric or something. It only worsens when I sand more around the ring part, so it's a layer underneath or something. Thought it was because I sanded too much, but it's not really any thinner than Kaito's mouth mod.

 

These two really are brothers in their own way. Kaito had his mouth air bubble scratch and Miles has his mouth ring. The path of a modder is filled with roadblocks, it seems. I accept this.

 

And yeah, that neck piece!! I move it the wrong way and SNAP. Which scares me because it makes me think I broke it! But it's just the screw coming off and the spring flying off in turn. Kaito's was a big pain the rear too, but I only had to do it once. In over a year, it has never come off. And I like it that way! So now I just have to find a screw of the same size but different length. And that hopefully won't be too hard to do.

 

(Update on that...I saw on an old post somewhere to use a screw from a VHS tape and it worked LOL. So now Miles' head is kept on by a screw from a 1998 Pokemon VHS and that's highly amusing to me. I'll see how well it holds. It already feels like a VERY strong grip compared to before.)

Sure! He has a backstory to a degree, but I don't actually write, so it's not exactly all neatly put together at the moment lol. Sorry in advance if it's a bit long?

 

Where Miles comes from, children attend a magic academy as their regular schooling. In his world, most magic is typically used for mundane everyday things, but everyone has one specialized skill. From there, people can pursue a field of work that relates to their skill. Miles generally excels at "regular" magic. Things like levitation, creating light, some small amounts of fire, etc. Currently, Miles is sort of a jack of all trades, but master of none.

 

Unfortunately, not all of these skills are what one would call "useful". Miles has one of these skills. His thing is that he can talk to cats. Just cats. No other animals. He can't command them, he can't summon them...he can just converse with them(and they mostly just snark at him.) He often finds himself bullied in school over having a useless ability, but he doesn't let it get him down. He wholeheartedly believes that he'll find a way to make that magic useful one day. So he applies himself to his studies very hard to prove to everyone that he can be helpful.

 

I say that Miles is a wizard in-training because that's currently what he believes he'll end up as. But when I picture him grown as an adult, I actually see him as a druid. Not quite sure how he gets there at the moment though. As an adult, cats cooperate with him willingly just from him being a respectable leader though. They're doing him "favors" rather than being commanded... So he gets there someday!

 

As for how he ended up with me...I blame a freak magic accident. I picture a cafeteria full of 12 year olds having a food fight. But instead of flinging food, they're flinging magic spells at each other. A mix of that many spells somehow makes a tear in space...and Miles, being the unfortunate boy he is, ends up in it.

 

So Miles has to adjust to life here for a while. He's already taken to calling me the headmaster of this "dormitory". Miles has a name for everything aside from the name they ALREADY have...I'll get more into that at a later time.

 

I guess I should point out that none of that should be taken as a serious story! If I were to write an actual story about Miles, he would be in a comedy for sure.

Thanks for telling us about Miles' story! It sounds like it would make a fun comedy anime or manga. I would definitely watch/read it!

So Miles is really getting into the Christmas spirit. And I haven't even told him about Santa yet.

 

"According to that "TV" thing of yours, it's trendy to wear an ugly sweater during this season...on purpose! I think I'm doing this Christmas thing pretty well. Do you think I'll get an invitation to one of those sweater parties?"

 

That doesn't really explain the bear hat...Miles insists that he must wear it though.

 

"Bears are cool, therefore this should boost my coolness appeal! It's really very simple!"

 

If you say so...but I don't think it's easy to earn cool points in a sweater like that!

 

I'm glad people apparently have the overwhelming need to put clothes on their wine bottles. Or Miles wouldn't have this delightfully ridiculous sweater.

I think I have officially clicked and bonded with Miles now. I was having him sit next to me and well...

I was sort of overwhelmed with that feeling of like... "My son!" I rarely get all maternal with my OCs, mainly because most of them are older teens or adults and therefore have no need for me to be like that with them. So Miles now has the honor of being one of two characters that I feel that way about. It's that smile.

 

And well, I couldn't argue with his bear hat logic since I have my own bear hat there in the background. I forgot it was over there. He does get that love of animal hats from me, technically lol. Even if I'm not "canonically" his parent.

So it's been super boring over here lately...we had a pretty nasty storm out here all week, so no fun allowed with photo things.

 

Miles has just been using his usual method of passing the time...

 

 

He gets to hang out with me today because he's recovering from "cosmetic surgery" It's probably not immediately noticeable, but Miles got a neck mod. The neck on this body was super long, so I cut it down a bit. He also got an eye change!

 

Let me tell you guys though, it feels super morbid to take a hacksaw and an x-acto blade to the neck of anything. Especially when it represents your own character. I felt like some kind of butcher. I guess I call my desk the "operating table" for a reason. Wouldn't be the first time I had a decapitated doll on it and it certainly won't be the last.

How did I miss seeing this adorable pic?!?! His sweet smile looking straight at the camera and charming pose are just too much. I think Obitsu joints are a little divisive among vinyl doll owners but I personally love them, especially when they're "in action." They can look pretty natural.

 

Interesting how Miles's 45cm neck looked long with his head! DDH-07 & DDH-09 both seemed to hang too low on my 50/60cm necks that I decided to use DD busts instead so their necks didn't look so short!

I feel this entire statement. ;____;" My first mods were something similar, only they were cuts in her legs. You could clearly tell it was cut though, and it looked so painful that I still feel guilty about doing it. I call it "plastic surgery" myself, though I'm probably more of a crack surgeon. It's something you just have to do so your dolls look the way they should but it's still nerve-wrecking every time, at least for me. On the bright side though, it does make for a good bonding experience!

I get so torn on Obitsu joints! I do agree that they tend to look better in action though than others. I think they really shine with dynamic posing if the joints are covered with clothes. Without clothes...sometimes I feel like the double peanut joint looks like Miles' elbow snapped. Now THAT looks painful!

 

I guess I also sort of prefer a shorter neck to a longer one though? Kaito's neck length has always looked pretty natural to me for an anime style. But Miles' felt way off to me from the moment I put his head on his body. I didn't cut off a lot though, maybe about half a centimeter? And that fixed it right up. I'm really happy with it. I think he's such a cute size now.

 

And at least someone gets my pain about the modding! I've always felt sympathy or some form of empathy towards objects, even when I was a kid. So I hate to feel like I'm "hurting" them with my modding. Kaito always escaped that from me because in my mind, he's not human. Robots are meant to be taken apart. That's how I "rationalize" it. But Miles is kind of a human(Technically he's a fantasy race, I guess) and humans aren't meant to have their necks cut! At least that is totally where the bonding part comes in after. I feel like I need to be extra nice to them because I just put them through something traumatic with my use of a hacksaw or sandpaper or whatever else on them. Or "plastic surgery" as you said lol. I wish I had thought of that one!

Glad I'm not the only one to feel concern for my dolls. Wasn't modding, but the first trip I took Miku on, she was new to me and had the Miku body suit on. I took her out of the travel bag and her leg was just limply dangling. I thought I had broken her and was feeling so bad at the pain she must be in. Later when I had the chance to undress her and remove the body suit to see the damage, I found her leg post had just slipped out of the joint. I was relieved, but still felt bad that I dislocated her hip. Now I make sure to push her legs in every once in a while so that it doesn't happen again. Sure, they don't get all the attention my real kids do, but these girls still get the feels.

'okay torino, don't look in this thread. you know there's a super cute MDD boy in there, and every time you see one of those your need for an MDD goes up another few notches, and the need is so high right now that its approaching tipping point and you really shouldnt be buying more dolls for a good while, especially when Volks have yet to announce any of their new DDs this year, so its best to just ignore the temptation and---

You'll get over it soon enough, especially if the modification helps make your own original character more "right". I've taken the sharp pointy object to my girls more times than I can count. I only feel bad/apprehensive about it when there is no replacement part available if I screw up.

sinclair: Poor Miku! I'm glad she turned out to be okay! It's good it wasn't actually broken. Actually breaking a part is a bit shock inducing! I still kick myself for accidentally breaking Kaito's wrist once. It was very...unpleasant, to say the least. I felt awful about it.

 

Torino: If it helps at all, Miles is still taller than an MDD, so he's not exactly what you're wanting? Lol I know that probably doesn't help much though! But I know the feeling too...I'm unfortunately letting myself be a bit irresponsible in a way. I'm already going to get a 40cm Parabox boy as my newest boy's body, but also as a model body. I decided to invest in myself a bit this year, I want to try selling heads and maybe simple MDD clothes at some point in the future(summer, probably when the weather is really stable here) to get practice in. And well, the exchange rate right now made this the best time to go for it...Still feels sort of bad, even though I haven't technically made the jump yet.

 

Be stong and continue on for the rest of us who have fallen off the willpower ship!

 

K-2: Well, you are king of these mods! I didn't get that hacksaw idea on my own, I admit. That was from one of your posts at some point. I forget if it was here or over at Dollieh Sanctuary. Luckily any mod I have in mind, you've usually done it first. So at least I always know ahead of time what can be done. Someone among us had to be the mostly fearless one. And it certainly couldn't be me.

So I recently downsized from 3 fish tanks to 2...so what does that mean? I have a small space to set up a photo area!

 

Kaito was being helpful in giving me an idea of how I'm going to set it up...with his new eyes and coat! He was owed some late Christmas gifts. Don't want him feeling neglected now that the doll family in my home sort of exploded in an instant.

 

 

So I'm just using a blank white canvas for testing. Still messing with how to get lighting right in here(there's a hanging lamp right above, wasn't on in this photo though.), but I think I can figure out something decent. Not that I'm ever aiming to be pro or anything, I just think taking pictures is fun here and there. I feel like I at least need to keep it interesting in here since I haven't been doing anything new lately. I'm excited to see what I can do next with a dedicated photo space.

 

I want to try using wrapping paper backgrounds, scrapbook paper backgrounds, stuff like that. Though this may all be an elaborate excuse to start collecting all those pretty papers I never had a use for before.

I'm using a different camera now, and it really does a good job of filtering out the yellow light of my room on its own. I'm still learning how to use it, but I like how it's going so far.

Its fun to use paper and stuff for backgrounds, and the lighter patterns especially make it easier to take photos. If you're willing to shell out for them, you can also find backdrops especially for BJD photography on ebay. The 1/3 ones are really quite huge though, so you'd probably need a bigger space for one (unless it was a design that its easy to cut trim a bit). It's what I've used in recent photo stories but i have a big table i barely use where the dolls all live anyway, no idea where else I'd put the thing. ;;

 

Anyway whether you use giftwrap paper, backdrops or whatever I look forward to the photos you can take now.ries

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I would've replied to everyone, but then I just got hit with a wave of busy/stress/etc @_@ BUT, good news! Sudden spur of the moment road trip to the Lake Tahoe area! My uncle is a very last minute planning person...So he wanted to take a family trip up there all of a sudden. Literally just got the confirmation of "yeah, let's actually go" today.

 

So I'm taking Kaito with me and I hope to get some snow photos! If weather allows, of course. It's apparently been really windy and such...but the place we're staying has tons of large windows and seems to just be an interesting space in general. Even if I can't make it outside, I can still get some cool shots indoors.

Kaito gets to travel in a warm fleece blanket/wrap at least. Very soft and fluffy! And I'm definitely bringing his new winter coat. I hope it'll be fun to take pictures there. Hopefully I won't mess anything up too bad because I don't know a darn thing about snow.

So the wind up here wasn't a problem...but the aftermath of the recent snow was!

 

 

And it only went higher as you went to the back yard...So I had to go with indoor shots. I guess I could have walked on it, but it scares me because I'm only 5 feet tall. If I fell in...the snow is taller than me. I'm a chicken because I don't know much about snow weather.

It of course has cabin decor in here and stuff. Really different than what we're used to at home!

 

 

 

It was fun to try to take what pictures I could in here...sadly didn't really get to take more. Going outside in this yard was out, and I'm also up here with my younger cousins and they're both being extremely fussy and tempermental this weekend, so that won't do. Kaito already got his eye accidentally knocked out by a two year old throwing a flailing tantrum in the car on the way up here lol. Had my doll bag on my lap, and thought his head was facing away from her car seat. It wasn't Was a bit funny when I opened the bag though.

 

Hoping for an easy trip back home tomorrow! This time, Kaito will be packed a little more properly!

Looks like he had fun at least. Even though you couldnt get a pic of him out in the snow, you still got a nice one with the snow in the background.
