DDH question

It's a common mod on 01s--they sand the original mouth off, and then carve and/or paint in a new one. Artists also often do a lot of sanding to the eyes while they're at it.

Hi, do you know any place that I could get someone to do that? or do I have to do it myself?

There are several faceup/mod artists out there who will take on such commissions. I personally have dealt with Freya's Faceups recently & was extremely pleased. She has a FB page-- check out her work & see if it is what you are looking for.

There are many of us doing faceups on commission basis here on the forum and on facebook, you can find the users' faceups portfolios here in this section -> http://www.dollfiedreams.com/viewforum.php?f=18 for example

The one at the bottom of the link of the page is a DDH-01.

The other ones you see is the head from DD K-On! Mio Akiyama, so it's an exclusive head. I'm not sure if it's the same as the DDH-01 or based on it.

Some more pics of the Mio head:

If you check the text of the URL in the opening post, it's specifically looking for Xera, who is definitely a modded 01 on an Obi40 body. Still, knowing that the other two are Mios might help someone else!

Oh, sorry. Correct.

Yep, it's definitely a DDH-01 regarding the topic then. However it reminds me of a SQLab head too, but it isn't. It's just a great DDH-01 mod and face-up.

Hi! thanks for the reply guys! I will try to mod the head myself (Gonna try it for the very first time) but is Xera's head white or semi white? The author says it's white but it looks semi white to me o.o

He got Xera before semi-white was a thing, so she's definitely white. However, if you want her to be an MDD (or MDD size, like Xera), then semi-white is going to be easier to find a matching body for, as Volks has only done white MDD bodies on two limited dolls released several years ago. (If you're going for DDS or DD, though, then you should be okay for true white.)

Hi! thanks for the reply, hmm a after some researching and browsing here and there, I think these are the items I need, I might miss some and so I was hoping I could get help :o

Items I need

https://www.volks.co.jp/page_ex.jsp?CONTROLID=SC0040&BUSINESSID=InitDisp&jancd=4518992801001&version=en

https://www.volks.co.jp/page_ex.jsp?CONTROLID=SC0040&BUSINESSID=InitDisp&jancd=4518992801049&version=en

What kind of Brush and knife? do you guys recommend to draw out the eye lashes because I can't find any in volks's store (Except the ones in their PVC section)

Does any sand paper and filer works? I know sand paper is probably use to sand the mouth off and the filer is used to sand the eyes right?

I seen people used this tool

https://www.volks.co.jp/page_ex.jsp?CONTROLID=SC0040&BUSINESSID=InitDisp&jancd=4518992363158&version=en

but I can't figure out what is it used for =/

Warning: text block of doom.

Honestly, a lot of those things you could get at a local craft store (or at least, an online art store located closer to you for better shipping). Pastels, sandpaper, acrylic paints. . . all that a good art store's gonna have.

The one thing you might want to consider getting at Volks specifically is the Zokeimura spray, as only it and Mr. Super Clear Matte are consistently verified as safe for vinyl; others have been known to react badly with vinyl and give you a sticky mess. (Testors Dull Cote, for instance, has had this effect, though the severity seems to vary widely by batch.)

The round ball doodly, called an eye beveler, is for the eye holes on the *inside* of the head, so the eyes sit better. If you opt to go that route, you're gonna want one bigger than 12mm for sure, since this is mostly a subtractive mod and you'd be making the eye holes *bigger*. (So you'd likely end up getting like, a 22mm or 24mm beveler.) Buuuut. . . . you can do a lot of of tweaking for eye fit with just sandpaper. :/

Sandpaper-wise, try to get something that's waterproof or wet/dry if you can. Then you'd sand with the paper wet, and a small container of water for rinsing the paper. It makes the paper last a bit longer, and is WAY better for dust control. You'll want a few grits, but go by the number, not just "coarse" or "fine". The lower the number, the coarser it is. For sanding the mouth off you may go as coarse as something in the 100-range, then do finer shaping with 200 or 300, and smooth it all off with 400 or so. (For those higher grits in waterproof, you'll probably want to hit a hobby shop, rather than a hardware store.)

As for files, you could get one. . . but since this is your first mod, you may want to get some sanding sticks for acrylic nails instead. http://www.amazon.com/Star-Nail-STAR-Sanding-Sticks/dp/B003O4FZLS

You can get them at beauty supply shops; I used something similar to reshape the eyes and lips on an obscure resin head, and they were awesome for the eye holes especially.

You could do a knife, or you could just sand like crazy with a lot of coarse grit sandpaper. Carving vinyl is kind of odd anyway, since it's springy. If you have a rotary tool, I'd personally recommend using a sanding drum on that for the heavy-duty mouth removal, or very coarse sandpaper, and stick to an Xacto and/or dental tools for fine-detail carving the new mouth. And actually, many, many modded 01s have the new mouth just painted on.

For paint, acrylics in general will do, but definitely fork out for some "retarder" or "retarding medium." What this does is it slows, or "retards", the drying time of the paint. You don't need much at all, couple of drops each time you use it, but the stuff is AWESOME for making fine and crisp lines. It's especially a must if you live in a dry climate like I do.

Pastels, some art stores will sell them in individual sticks, so you can get JUST the colors you want instead of a whole set. A peachy-pink will be nice, and maybe something a little bit on the darker red side. Brown would be great in a more detailed faceup, but in this case it may be a little much if you don't want to give her eyeshadow.

Hope at least some of that helps!

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to post such a informative post, hmm I think I roughly got the idea now, just a few more questions,

Because I'm trying to do her looks from a default DDH-01 head https://lycorisoradiata.wordpress.com/2011/12/24/xera_my_first_custo/

It seems like her mouth is just "poke" a hole with a craving knife, am I right? how would you approach on doing her face? "the steps etc"

Edit: On the 2nd image, there seems to be a sort of a "guideline" for you to draw the eye lashes, does the default head comes with it too? because I sucks at drawing =/ (I can only draw manga but drawing on a flat surface and drawing on a round object are 2 different things)

I always thought MSC was "optional" but it seems to be compulsory :o and do you use marker to draw the eyelashes/browns or brush with black paint? and how do you apply the blush?
