SolicitorPirate Posted January 30, 2017 @elianti For the most part, I got the impression that the writers didn't realize how messed up the children stuff is. Like the parents just abandon them into the deep realms with such reckless abandon, it feels like the writers room genuinely didn't consider how negligent it was! lol and yeah, I didn't realize at the time that there weren't time travel shenanigans and that the couples presumably do the deed there and then. It was only after I paired Hinoka with Hayato and got their paralogue when I realized she should probably hide from the samurai cops for the rest of her life... @chise Oh! You knew about 8-4 doing the translation for Awakening! I was considering bringing them up a few posts back, but was worried that'd be too inside baseball. Obviously I was mistaken 8-4 does really good work. Off memory, they did great translations for Monster Hunter 4 and Xenoblade X, the latter of which was my game of the year for 2015. 8-4 also does a bi weekly podcast if you're interested. They generally just chat about games, but sometimes they go into their philosophies when approaching localisation, and its pretty interesting. But yeah, the kids felt super shoehorned into the game since they were so well received in Awakening. I'm quite curious to see if they appear again in the Switch game, and if so, whether they are better implemented or just as haphazard.
Anna-neko Posted January 30, 2017 @Foo oooh man, do not get me started on the kids' stats! I had flowcharts & precise class calculations in Awakening to breed the absolute strongest & best for my recruiting! (with a side-order of hair colors alignments for Morgan) @SolicitorPirate 8-4 has a podcast? NEAT!! *adds to listen list* but yeah, they are absolutely my jam as they've done pretty much all the Tales games, and lemme tell u how freakin much I love me some Tales of series! SolicitorPirate Posted January 31, 2017 @Chise Have you been playing Tales of Berseria? I'm not a big Tales fan, but I've heard really good things about that one
Kitsune Posted January 31, 2017 I've been on Fate/Extella for the last days. I play it for the characters and "story" and my boyfriend because he loves Dynasty Warriors. It's been a while since I had a game with so much replay value~
sinclair Posted January 31, 2017 @ChiseHave you been playing Tales of Berseria? I'm not a big Tales fan, but I've heard really good things about that one Same here. I'd like to know how this one is. I loved playing Tales of Zestiria. It's the 1st Tales game I played. I found it really enjoyable, until the final boss battle when all of a sudden I can't inflict any damage to him so I can shoot my Seraph at him. I just about rage quit, I was so close to the end and the battle dynamic seems to change so now I don't know how to win. Anywho, I was wondering how similar play style in Berseria is to Zestiria as it's the 1st JRPG I've truly really enjoyed so much in a long time.
Anna-neko Posted January 31, 2017 keep forgetting Tales of Berseria is on Steam now... man, my games backlog is getting kinda of ridiculous. Tales of Symphonia PS3 re-release was my last venture into Tales. Following a franchise over different consoles is hard work! from Phantasia on GBA to Vesperia on Xbox 360.... then back to 3DS for Abyss re-release of minor fail (people, if u can, play that on PS2!) Gabriel Posted January 31, 2017 I've discovered this cool little card game called Dark Tales. It's not constructible or collectible. It's just a stand alone card game, although it does have three expansions (and I snagged all three). The theme of the game is dark fairy tales. The art on the cards is really nice. The gameplay is about scoring victory points and comboing cards for big payoffs. I think it's fun, and it takes about 30 minutes for a game with just the original set, and maybe about an hour if one of the expansions is tossed in.
Gunter Posted February 1, 2017 Only very recently have I been able to pull myself away from it, but it's probably because right now I'm in the winter of year one and I really don't enjoy mining or fishing all that much (I've been told I should be socializing during the winter too, but... my farm can't support itself like yours can just yet :P I was romancing Penny at first, but then I got to know Leah and I was totally smitten. Considered Harvey for a bit but he's a huge dork and I can't get past the hipster mustache and glasses. Somebody was talking to me about the farm layouts thing yesterday and I have no idea what either of you are talking about. When was that patch released? I got the game around Christmas as a gift from my partner. I was and still am a Harvest Moon addict, and I feel like they (concerned ape) fixed a lot of what was wrong with HM when they were designing SDV. I still hate SDV's fishing mechanic though. Oh yeah, winter is the only part of the game I have a hard time getting through. I know multiple people who stopped because it is a bit of a drag. It takes a few cycles to get to that level of functioning, and a lot of socializing actually with particular people. You unlock A LOT by socializing/being a good person/giving gifts because I WANT THOSE HEARTS. Oh Harvey would be cute, maybe if I start another I'll consider him. o3o I adore Leah. She's a sweetheart. So the update came out in October: http://stardewvalley.net/stardew-valley-v1-1-changelog/ What it did was it brought in a choice of farm styles. My biggest one is on the river based farm, and I'm debating starting a forest or hilltop style. It is just a change to the surroundings of the farm, and also you can find more materials of various kinds based on which you choose. I think there is even one where you can have monsters just always appear on your farm. (Great if you like drops) More buildings could be made, more people you could date, it says it all there. But if you got it during the holidays then it you have always had it. Before that it was a bit more limited and you could only have the basic farm layout. I started playing it near launch date so I've been here for a bit. XD I haven't played a Harvest Moons since....A Wonderful Life (the girl variant though). I may have played another but it isn't coming to mind. I do really love them though, and would probably play one if I had a console I could play it on. I've been on Fate/Extella for the last days. I play it for the characters and "story" and my boyfriend because he loves Dynasty Warriors. It's been a while since I had a game with so much replay value~ It is so much fun! I love the musou style games. Also the dialogue is something special. XD The last Fate/ game I played was Extra, so it feel appropriate that I follow it up with what feels like a ton of Saber Nero fanservice. I enjoy the ability to essential play with anyone after some time as well. I prioritized RE7 over this, but now that we finished that (was a venture for my boyfriend and I) I'mma go all in on this game, and Star Ocean. o3o
SolicitorPirate Posted February 8, 2017 So I'm playing Tales of Berseria and it's essentially the story of a group of dysfunctional people who kidnap a small child and proceed to give him terrible life advice
foo Posted February 8, 2017 Fire Emblem Heroes for mobile was released this past weekend and I've been playing it. A lot. I didn't expect it to be this much fun with the tiny maps. You can summon heroes from the games (random chance) in exchange for orbs. You get one orb for every story level you complete, and you're given 15 orbs to start with. You also get 2 orbs daily because they're doing a game launch celebration, otherwise you have to spend like $12 CDN I think, for like 10 orbs? To summon a hero and add them to your roster, you need to spend at least 5 orbs; the second hero is cheaper at 4 orbs, and so on up to a total of 5 per summoning session. There's like a 60% chance of getting a 3-star hero, 36% for 4-star, and 5-star is 3%. The 5-star ones are the most popular & powerful characters in the series, like Marth & Roy. Early on I got 4-star Corrin, the female avatar from Fates who fights as an overpowered dragon. Woot. A few hours ago I saved up 10 orbs and took a shot at it. I summoned a 5-star Roy and a 5-star Merric !(◎_◎') The 5-stars have cool intro animations as they summon too. The game is basically telling me to spend money on more orbs, so fine. I ended up summoning a 4-star Fredrick from Awakening and a 4-star Effie from Fates. And Stahl. Uh, wow. They're still level 1 with weak defense, but for example Roy has 24 attack, which is more than my level 15 Corrin. Just now I decided to try the online duel battles for the first time. I picked 'beginner' since it's my first, and my characters are low levelled. The party was Corrin, Roy, Merric, and Oboro (level 12). I destroyed some player from Japan and their starter characters. I feel like such an asshole

SolicitorPirate Posted February 8, 2017 So I'm playing Tales of Berseria and it's essentially the story of a group of dysfunctional people who kidnap a small child and proceed to give him terrible life advice Have you played Tales of Zestriria? And if so, how does Berseria compare? I've played it, but I bounced off Zestiria super fast. Besides Mikleo and his relationship with Sorey, I didn't really like much of anything in that game. I felt the story was poorly paced, with the characters just aimlessly faffing about. The overall narrative was embarrassingly cliche, even for a Tales game, and the characters felt more like tropes than people. The combat system also annoyed me; I felt it mistook complexity for depth, and added all these needless sub systems that didn't actually make the game fun. I'm loving Berseria in comparison. The overall narrative isn't too special, but playing the 'villains' is a novel experience, and the whole revenge angle brings a personal aspect to the story that Zestiria lacked. The combat system is also a lot more streamlined compared to Z, and while it's not my favourite JRPG combat system, I enjoy it well enough. Berseria's greatest strength however is in its cast; you control a group of dysfunctional and morally compromised people who are much more interesting and better written than a majority of Tales characters. The writers were also smart enough to not just let them wallow in grim dark edge, and allow the characters to care about each other, allowing them to show flashes of humanity while still keeping them on the villainous side. SolicitorPirate Posted March 2, 2017 Yo, so Horizon Zero Dawn is really really good. I've also been really enjoying For Honor. Some of you folks might like that game since you can just take your warrior person and play dress up with them.
sinclair Posted March 2, 2017 Yo, so Horizon Zero Dawn is really really good. I've seen previews and read reviews, but I'm still torn about getting it. It's pretty and the setting is something I'd enjoy, but it seems the combat is too complicated for my tastes. I tire very quickly of combat heavy and deep games. They need a demo so I can get a feel for it. I've played the demo for Nier and will probably get that one.

I haven't been following it as much, but what few videos I've seen of it seem to suggest combat would be pretty intricate and complex. But yeah, if combat is not your thing, Horizon might not do it for you. One of its chief points of differentiation compared to other open world games is its Monster Hunter inspired combat

hikaru1976 Posted March 24, 2017 A few shooters, mainly The Division, Far Cry 4 and Sniper Elite 3... Planning to fish out the PS2 over summer and replay the Xenosaga Trilogy... (Ok, might skip 2 ) And finally, also in summer, might continue up with Idolmaster 2, Way of the Samurai 4 and whichever Atelier games I didn't play yet. Gabriel Posted March 24, 2017 Planning to fish out the PS2 over summer and replay the Xenosaga Trilogy... (Ok, might skip 2 ) I got the urge to try this a couple of years ago. I got about a dozen hours into the first game before I gave up. The third one is probably the only one "worth" replaying. The funny thing is I still remember how happy I was to get the second installment over with and then how after a few hours of the third one, I was missing the old combat system. The combat system on Two was long and tedious with turn upon turn spent stocking up and building for a big beat down, but it felt involving. Three didn't have that involvement in the combat system and it just felt unsatisfying to me. I'm not saying Two's combat system was good, but it was definitely very satisfying to lay the epic smack down after you did your long powerup chain. The biggest problem was it was like that for EVERY monster, even the fodder that you should be able to just hit Attack, Attack, Attack and then move on. Yeah, I do recall that so likely I'll probably play a few hours of one and two and then try to finish beginning to end of three. For me it felt quite empty as you say, but the story was very good, so it made up (at least for me) for the lacking combat system. Still... yeah... I know where you're coming from
