Ie-Aster Posted June 25, 2016 Hello all, I'm working on making a doll of a character who has a swept-up hairline (his hair is combed back from his forehead) and what I have read, at least for cosplays, is that if one wants to cosplay such a hairstyle one should be using a lace front wig. As far as I have found, there aren't any commercial BJD or DD wigs which have a lace front hairline, and since the hairstyle is pretty complicated anyway and I'd have to sew on a weft of a different color no matter what, I want to try creating the lace front part from scratch and stitching it into the front of the wig. I was wondering if anyone has done this before and has any advice (whether for dolls or for cosplay). Or, alternatively, if you have dolls with swept-back hairlines and have used an alternative method for their hair. I'd very much appreciate any advice/suggestions/photographs! Thank you At home: Mei (DDP Lucy custom), Aku (DDB Takane custom) En route: L. (DD Matoi)
vhdangel Posted June 27, 2016 What I have seen is that people who want a really intricate hairstyle, typically make an alpaca or fine fiber (polypropylene works nicely) wig with a custom made wig cap. You use cling film/plastic wrap -> pantyhose -> glue (tied down with rubberbands and left 48 hours to dry). Then cut to the size you want, and for a swept back style, you sew a reverse weft right under the front of the cap and brush it back. I would use this tutorial (seriously, Scargeear's work is AMAZING): Alternately, this one is SUPER time consuming, but it's probably the best answer to lace-front wigs for bjds:
Ie-Aster Posted June 28, 2016 Thank you! These are super amazing. Strangely, the part that makes me most nervous is actually constructing the wig cap >_< Still, there's a first time for everything. I think the first tutorial will work quite well, assuming I don't mess it up, since the character's hairstyle is pretty similar to the one in those photographs. Thanks again!
