Any way to shorten DDDy3 bodies?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! For the past few months I've been waffling over reshelling my main girl from her 50cm Azone AZO2 body to a larger size so that she would be at the perfect height with her guy partner, who is slated to be a smartdoll Crimson. I figured that it would be far easier to adapt my girl's doll plans to match the guy than to keep waiting for an uncertain release of a nonstandard-sized male doll.

Given that my girl character is supposed to be quite curvy, I'm of course considering a DDDy body for her. However, I do have another girl who would be a DDDy too that *has* to be a bit taller. I know that DDDys came in two releases, and that the older one is shorter(and more aesthetically pleasing in my opinion lol), but I'd really prefer a better range of motion which I assume the newer bodies have.

I've never handled DDs before so I don't know all that much about part swapping capabilities. I was thinking about switching the DDDyIII shins for DDS ones, is that even possible? The height difference would probably be verrry tiny if any at all but it would give me piece of mind at least lol I'd also love to find a way to push the bust part lower to shorten her and also emphasize the curves a bit more, but I'm more unsure of that working. A change like that would probably require a mod to the internal skeleton, but I highly doubt that's feasible..

If anyone can help me with this, I'd really appreciate it! I'm really nitpicky about my OCs being represented as accurately as possible, and although realistically it's highly improbable that I'll get all of them in doll form I'd like to keep them to a certain standard to allow for the super slim possibility of that happening. They range from being preteens to in their mid-twenties with varied body types and skin tones so I have a long way to go. ^^"

The only way to "safely" shorten DDs is trimming the shins. I have a DDS 'shortstuff' I bought from the forum here; there's a thread about it here; viewtopic.php?f=37&t=7822&p=118114 but the images are dead. You could perhaps contact SakuraSylph about it, and see if images are still available. I took a few of mine for someone else, but directions help more for them mod, I figure.

Thanks Eustia! I'd really love to see pictures of how this mod looks! FromSakuraSylph's description, it looks like the mod process is pretty similar to shortening the shins of a 60cm obitsu, which I've done before. It's not something I'd like to experience again(parts-swapping is MUCH more preferable to me than using a saw to trim the inner skeleton lol), but knowing it's an option is great news.

From the knees down, DDs and DDdy's are the same, from my understanding, and in that same vein, the only difference in height between DDS and DD is in the shins. In theory it should work, haha. The only body I haven't assembled is a DDdy, but based on my DDIII and DDS assembly experience, I would say you should be able to just swap the parts.

DDS shins will work on DDDy thighs, but may look a little odd bare (fine if clothed, I imagine). But there isn't -that- much size difference. It's about an inch at most, so if you want more, you'd have to do the mod. From what I see of my shorty, it shouldn't be terribly difficult if you are crafty and have the tools.

Here are the photos I took a while ago of mine. You can see it is simply cut/shaped and the internal peg cut to match, probably the hardest part;

Thanks a lot you two! I'd most likely opt for just switching out the shins for her first even though I'd probably only get a ~1cm difference. The pictures of that mod are really useful and interesting though! It's actually more straightforward than I thought. It's good to know that no glue would be involved LOL. I may consider that mod if I'm not satisfied with the effect from just part-swapping.

DD thighs are longer than DDS by a fair amount, I'm pretty sure the difference in length are not all from the shins.

There is a thread on this forum about DDS thighs on DD3 body

I may have had it backwards then, I can never remember which part it is that's shorter, haha! Thanks for the clarification. I should have just looked at the bodies I had in front of me, since I do have girls on all three bodies.

I was searching for DDS / DD III legs comparison info for days .. Until I saw an old post of "nogo171" with a picture of DDS leg and DD III leg on the same DDS body.. that guy literally saved me!

I believe I saw that image too(featuring Yukiho, iirc). I really liked the super slim and tall look of the DDS body with DD legs lol That would work perfectly for one of my girls.

SakuraSylph's leg shortening mod has got me thinking though.. Perhaps I could solve my original issue and shorten the legs of a smart doll boy similarly too. This is possibly opening up the door to a whole host of modding possibilities.. Different heights for all \o/

The actual process of shortening the legs isn't too hard, if you want to reproduce the same shortstuff that Eustia took photos of. The part that takes the most time is sanding the bottom of the shins after the cutting, as you can spend as much time as you wish making it smooth. To summarize:

Materials: Ruler, compass, xacto knife, sandpaper of varying grits as desired, clamps, dremel, pencil.

1. Measure the compass and pre-set it to the specific height you want to remove.

2. Use the compass to trace the outline of the bottom of the shin that you'll need to cut. This way you can get the outline perfect in terms of height and shape.

3. Cut along the line with an xacto knife, removing the vinyl from the bottom of the shin.

4. Take out the shinbone peg that connects the knee socket to the ankle socket. Use needlenose pliers if necessary to pluck it out, just depending on how stuck it is.

5. Measure and draw a line on the shinbone peg, shortening it by the same amount as the leg vinyl.

6. Use clamps to hold the peg in place, and use a dremel with cutting wheel to cut through the plastic slowly but surely.

7. Cut off some of the top of the ankle socket if needed using the dremel, just depending on how much you shortened. If shortened by as much as I did, you will need to mod that ankle socket in order to allow the foot to be pushed in all the way onto the newly shorter shinbone peg.

8. Sand the end of the vinyl however desired to give it a more finished appearance.

I originally used 1.25", and I think that's about the maximum safe amount you can reasonably take off without impacting the functionality of the doll. If more were taken, then you'd start to have problems putting on boots because the calves would be the wrong height relative to the feet, and the boots couldn't zipper up at the top. But with 1.25" or less taken then all the boots I tried still fit properly.

Will you be selling the AZO2 body if you reshell? I've been really wanting one, but I don't have any interest in the azone dolls themselves.
