Updated: second face up! (Smart Doll Eiji)

Hello all,

 

Yesterday my first 1/3 scale doll arrived, a Smart Doll Eiji! His 'code name' for now is A-chan. It will take a while to finish all the things necessarily for properly unveiling him as the character he's going to be/ buy them cosiamreallybrokecough buuuut because I am impatient I wanted to show photographs anyway. ^_^

I spent a lot of time reading all the information here before making the purchase, so I would like to thank everyone who contributed photos and information as well as the forum members involved in Eiji's development process!

 

Please let me know if anyone has photo requests or anything else they'd like to ask about or see

Your photos are really nice! I really need to learn how to take photos that dont look like butt. Of course, the fact that I dont know jack about cameras plays a part in that

your Eiji looks so well posed! its something i'm taking a learning cirb to get used to on my Eiji

Today I finished making the first wig, which is really just a modified Leekeworld boy cut wig. I want to make from scratch another one that has the hair combed back. For the blue...thingy >__<, I actually rooted the strands directly on the wig cap in order to make them stand up correctly.

First and most importantly, I'm working on a new wig for him!

The blue-swirly-thing/ahoge is just pinned in place here, I haven't rooted it in yet. Also, the wig needs considerable water wax and trimming, but is just photographed such that that isn't too obvious.

Congrats on getting a Lucy head for Mei btw! I can't wait to see her in her donut-bun-twintail glory. Lucy is a WS head though right? I know the obi50 body is just temporary but I hope the color difference won't bother you too much.. >< (unless you found a super white obi50, which might not be too bad lol)

I am going to get a pair of glasses from a small Japanese shop that look perfect based on his official art! I feel so lucky thatthey exist

 

I tried to get a super white but no go :/ but then I decided that since Mei isn't supposed to be super pale anyway, and since Volks appears to be phasing out WS, I would just blush her head. I think this worked well--the obi just arrived so I'll post shots later!

Alright well I decided I wanted to have a face up that matched Akuro's canon artwork, so I did a practice version today. There are some obvious errors (especially with the eyebrows and the mouth) which make him look like he's had nothing but coffee for the past forty-eight hours and has probably done several consecutive all-nighters, but hey, it makes for some vaguely amusing photos.

I've been meaning to do the same with Kaito because his face is just looking more and more bland to me in comparison to Rin/Len.

I think mad scientist dolls just sort of demand to have one eyebrow raised. Agatha's first two faceups had the raised eyebrow thing even more pronounced than your boy. Third time I managed to downplay it a lot, but from some angles you can tell they're not really level. XD Who knows, maybe you could embrace it in the next version! It sure gives him a mischievous attitude.

Yeah, the default faceup isn't bad, but it is pretty generic looking.

Also, useful thing for when you do the faceup: it helped me a great deal to work with the headcap on. Because of the angle of the head-headcap seam, the facial proportions look very strange without the headcap, and for me at least I couldn't visualize how to position the eyebrows without the cap on.

Thanks! I'm very happy that the smile comes across that way, since it's shown like that in a lot of artwork, and I was having trouble trying to convey it on the 3-D medium of the sculpt. Now I know I can keep this style in the new version, though I'll probably do it in a lighter shade. While the really dark lines seem to look all right in photos, they aren't really to my taste IRL. It looks a bit like Tales from the Borderlands cosplay makeup, which can be a cool aesthetic but isn't what I'm going for.

Resurrecting this thread from the dead!

 

First, inspired by that scene in Re:Zero and a fanart of Mei and Akuroma I saw on Pixiv:

Second, refaceup mark II. (Sorry for the shoddy phone photos).

 

I think it came out considerably better than the previous version, though he looks very concerned. Originally his eyebrows looked better but I messed up when trying to make them paler (to match his hair) and then I had to restart.

 

The glasses are thanks to Torino kindly helping me get them from a Japanese maker. I'm very happy with how closely they match Akuroma's glasses in canon.
