DD Fes 2016 - Ltd Preorder announcement Soon

I would bet it's not a Idolm@ster girl... I'm not a huge part of the fandom but I feel like they've already released the top girls from each series? I mean, we haven't seen Anzu from Cinderella but I can't think of any other super-popular girl that we're missing?

 

(Altho the new body would be perfect for Anzu, so maybe she is a realistic possibility?)

I do think there is a chance with the new body we'll see an Anzu....which honestly doesn't bother me. Anzu is actually one of the two I really like. The only one I'd actually for sure go for though is Koume Shirasaka (Best girl~)....but I feel she's too alternative for them to do. :<

 

So I'm still super just hopin' for CCS. Come on Volks! Follow the trend right now!

I think it's really unlikely for an im@s girl to be the next preorder. Hibiki is the only one I'd really want, but I think she's better suited for the DDS body instead of DDP imo. There are still two other facets of Idolm@ster that haven't been made into DDs yet (the Million Live girls and SideM guys) but those two don't even have an anime yet(hopefully soon enough ;_;") so they're probably not popular enough yet?

 

At this point, if the next pre-order ISN'T Sakura, I'll be surprised. All the signs seem to point to her, but who knows?

 

With all of the Pokémon hype this year with its 20th anniversary as well I have a liittle bit of hope for it, but CCS totally fits better as a doll release xD

But my gut is with you that it's not Idolm@ster, I don't think they'd be promoting it as "this big mystery" with a guessing game and everything, if it's a franchise they've already produced. My guess is a brand-new franchise that uses the DDP body.

 

My hope would be a 2-doll combo, one DDP and one DDSb, buuuuut I have a feeling I'm being too hopeful on that front.

I've wanted an Anzu forever, but I think it may just be wishful thinking.

I'm hoping for CCSakura but know that most likely it will be a show that employs some form of fan service based on who they've made DDs of in the past. So if Hyperdimension is big in japan right now and still relevant I could see that more than Sakura.

 

Now I'd be super excited for CCSakura (magical girl goodness is my world!) just... I'd see that more as a resin release... but then again Belldandy was a resin release (whyyy?) so maybe Volks will switch things up. Though a 50cm girl, Sakura is 10 in the series which a mdd makes more sense of.. I would doubt they would make a CCSakura doll of her with the new 'clear card arc' where she is now in middle school and older. Seems if they did her as a doll they'd have to do the original iconic red ruffled skirt and her be shorter.

I think you are gravely understimating CardCaptor Sakura's appeal with adult men. (Well, CCSakura appeals to basically all demographics but the older male fanbase was and still is pretty large. For better or worse -side eyes doujinshi-)

 

In regards to DDs being aimed at adult men, though, that's been changing a lot. Not just with DDs, but with figures too. Nearly all the hobby companies in Japan are finally sitting up and realising that women are, always have been and are increasingly even more a huge part of collector-fandom too, and they have a lot of money. Remember how just a few years ago people used to go on and on about how they wished there were more than just a few male nendoroids? That seems unbelievable today; Goodsmile even made a sister company in Orange Rouge strictly to handle male figures aimed at women. And then hell froze over while Native made a figure of a naked dude for a change. Len is a start, so it wouldnt surprise me at all if Volks were expanding their DD target market even if just a fraction. It'd be long overdue after all.

 

Although...was it actually confirmed that the new DD would be on the Dollfie Dream Pretty body? It would make sense, but Volks sometimes doesn't make much sense.

Now could Volks be turning it around? Yeah, considering Miku then Rin/Len are being released (I'm not 100% up on vocaloid fandom/portrayal so I have no idea if people hyper-sexualize those characters)... but gambling odds as they are, I'd be still a little bit skeptical... and I reaaaally want a CCSakura mdd or ddp or whatever. I'm just sayin, based on the style of shows/series they release limiteds of, I'd be betting it'd be some popular show in Japan that has a predominately male-focused audience with some t-and-a predominantly featured.

 

Danny has, I think, caused Volks to wake up a bit and try to do things differently... so maybe CCSakura is in the mix... or would Sailormoon be even more possible? I think Sailormoon has a bigger fanbase than CCSakura. Either way if its not a magical girl, I'll cry... XD

Wow, that's a very cynical view of the collaboration models. For a product line consisting of female anime-styled dolls, it's expected that it consists of popular female anime characters. Fate, Macross, Evangelion, and Gurren Lagan are some of the most iconic properties in anime history, and it's disingenuous to say that they're fanservice products for males. If you're complaining about the lack of Sailor Moon it could simply be that Bandai doesn't want to yet (I can't imagine that Volks wouldn't LOVE to do that license, SM merchandising is big business). With the new TV series and the DDP, I expect it to happen eventually.

 

Over time the product line has gone from sexy-hot large-bust girls and gradually worked its way to DD Len, with S-busts, Mini Dollfie Dream, Dollfie Dream Sister, and SS-busts along the way. It's actually funny if you go through the Flickr group's old discussion threads about people complaining that Volks needs X (such as a DDS-sized body), and Volks has eventually done that. Over time, Volks has done a lot to flesh out the DD product line. Introducing two body types at once like they did this year, DDS boy and DDP, is surprisingly fast for them, and probably an indicator of how big their DD business is getting.

Hold up now. At what point am I complaining?

 

I clearly don't mind any of those series since i own a lot of the dolls from the aforementioned series (check out my signature!).

 

Pointing out Volks' tendency to put out dolls from series that typically has fan service and is marketed more to a male audience is not being cynical. It's called being realistic.

 

Has Volks made a DD of any other show that proves counter to my point? If so, let me know. You could say Volks Akihabara Girls, but that's their own line and not tied to an existing franchise.

 

Idolm@ster could be one they're on the more innocent side, Touhou could also be I guess (but again, I'm not 100% up on that fandom to know for certain) - but those are two franchises that are still male focused, yes?

 

That aside... I'm more of the mindset that they got a respective "kick in the pants" from Danny's SmartDoll line and this is why they are now starting to diverge and make new doll options such as a boy and a in-between size.

 

I like to discuss/speculate, so no insults are intended on this side of the fence. My hope is for Sakura or Usagi from their respective shows... but I'm also trying to be realistic and look at Volks' previous track record to try to guess what their big announcement could be. I will most certainly 'eat crow' if its the doll I want... and preorder it in a heartbeat. XD

Er, how about Macross? Why is that for men, or a fan service anime? Same with Fate/stay night, despite some H scenes in the original VN. Also, Haruhi. Really at that point you may as well say any anime with women in it has fan service, including Sailor Moon (OMG SHORT SKIRTS).

 

The only thing about Sailor Moon that makes it for women is its shoujo roots and the number of women who keep saying that (･･') If you look at the garage kit community, there's tons of guys who readily admit they're huge Sailor Moon fans, it basically comes down to if you grew up with it or not.

It started out that way though, so it was a male targeted series originally. (and I love Fate Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works.) To Heart was also a game right? Came out as a non h-series, but that still doesn't mean the target audience was also flipped.

The products that are released from the show are also an indicator of the target audience.. RPG toys for little girls, stationary, barbie-like dolls, etc... that was a show aimed at younger females first (which is why it ran in Nakayoshi which is generally for ages 9-15). The reboot of the series and the items that have come out now are geared towards adult women and some men (in terms of the Girls Memories figures with Sailormoon having her bloomers in a hilarious wedgie)

 

I am not trying to split fans of any series into teams - you can be a gal and still like any of the previous DD released shows. I'm not going to just fully believe a release of Sakura or say someone from Precure or Ojamajo Doremi is more of a possibility of a DD release than some other current series with a more male-skewed target audience.

 

If the doll has a pretty sculpt, that's enough for me at any rate.

My whole point is the list of Volks DD Collab models are heavily stacked towards series geared to men - Vocaloid along with this new preorder could be the shift in the tide for Volks and I would 100% welcome it, but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if it was related to some current series that includes some of the elements included in the above posts.

 

I'd welcome being wrong btw. My entire wall of magical girl collectibles screams for a Sakura or Usagi dollfie dream b/c they have the best aesthetic (in my personal opinion btw!) vs Danny or Azone's or Obitsu's current releases.

I think the problem is you're comparing 'for men' on one side against children's shows like CCS and Sailor Moon. You're right (a) Pokémon doesn't have any fan service and (b) DDs have never been from children's shows. The difference with CCS is that there's been a ton of merchandise lately targeted at adults with $$$ to burn, who are the people who grew up watching it. Things like the figmas and PVCs, which are really expensive and meant for adult collectors. That's what makes CCS so likely, they've been making merch for that audience for almost two years now, even before the new manga was announced (this March afaik).

 

It was weird in 2014 when her figma and Nendoroid releases came out of nowhere, and the entire series showed up on Crunchyroll. This beautiful ¥23000 PVC is available for pre-order right now until September. A pre-order DDP that opens in September fits perrrrrfectly with all that.

 

These are just arguments it could (and totally should) be Sakura despite what Volks has released in the past. I could be wrong

I'm hoping do a double whammy of Sakura. One from CardCaptor Sakura in the new DDP body and the second on the DD or DDS body in the form of Sakura from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. Though I would also be very satisfied to see them announce Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon.

 

If it does end up like that then Volks have soooo much potential with outfits. Which they seem to like to do a lot nowadays. So instead of selling a doll with maybe one alternate outfit they will in all likelihood make a doll with several. I think it's safe to say that anime is pretty non-gendered here in the west (I can't speak for Japanese markets). And by that I mean the whole shoujo/shounen classification doesn't really stick and really the only anime we get exposed to on regular TV is stuff like Beyblade, Pokemon, Digimon, and Yu-Gi-Oh on kids channels.

 

For me I tend to watch more shounen anime because they're generally more exciting and actiony. Shows like Madoka Magica kinda blur that line (because damn... That anime... *shudders*) and shows like Sailor Moon are more a nostalgia thing for me. Don't get me wrong, I very much enjoy the reboot. But at the end of the day Volks isn't known for its Shoujo releases.

 

Then again, Volks is at the end of the day a business and their primary goal is and always will be making money. The best way to do that is to use marketing to sell a product. With CardCaptor Sakura's 20th anniversary coming up that would be a great way to have other companies market your product for you in addition to doing some yourself. All they need to do is slap 20th Anniversary on the box and they're golden. Then again did Volks release anything for Sailor Moon's 10th anniversary? Why not? Was it a licensing issue? Are Bandai keeping everything In-house? In short, we don't know... And we never will.

Don't feel bad, I was never in CCS and I'm 25 now and just got into Sailor Moon. I was hoping for a Sakura Miku too. I wouldn't mind another Miku, but if they're going to do that they really need to up the outfit game instead of just different colored default outfit for her. That's why I didn't buy Snow Miku. I would imagine a Sakura miku just being pink and white default outfit too.

 

But there seems to be a lot of CCS hype going around so maybe that's what it is.

Thanks. I am not sure what the original generation age of CCS and Sailor Moon would be, but since it is the 20th anniversary of CCS I can guess. I came into anime later in life and so it wasn't even on my radar. I grew up with Wonder Woman (not animated, but the greatest) - Shazam! - Thundercats. Now I gave up my age...lol.

 

Still, my son loves Sailor Moon (he saw the new version and then went back for the original). I have seen bits here and there and it looks interesting. I will give it a go sometime. It is not what I would personally hope for this time, but I know it would make lots of fans happy so it would be cool.

 

I got my dream when Volks finally did something from Xenosaga, so I totally understand how it would feel.

One thing about Sakura Miku, she didn't start out as an "official" Miku. There's some info here, but the gist of it is that the design debuted as a keychain for some event, then bootleggers made Nendoroids, then GSC made a real Nendoroid. Snow Miku OTOH is the mascot of the Sapporo Snow Festival. Sakura Miku's cute, but a minor Miku among Mikus. For example, these are all the Sakura Miku products in the MFC database (compare to Snow Miku, where the results are limited to 90).

 

At best, if enough fans ask for it they'd make a Sakura Miku outfit.

That would be me in my late 30's, as they came out while I was in high school. SM and CCS are the two shows that got me into anime, and I've been hooked ever since.
