sleepywolf Posted July 18, 2016 Found this neat little piece of Volks history today; a photo from 1972(?) of Hideyuki Shigeta and his wife infront of their little Volks shop where it all started http://www.zoukeimura.co.jp/en/sentiment/oyajiblog_048.html (scroll down a bit, the photo is close to the top of the page). vanellablanche Posted July 27, 2016 Aww, that's such a sweet little story. Volks has come a long way, and now I can't get it out of my head that it's a mom-and-pop type of shop. XD Does anyone know whether or not they kept the original place, or if it's still standing, at least? Might make for an interesting little trip if/when we're in Japan. jazijaz Posted July 28, 2016 Found this neat little piece of Volks history today; a photo from 1972(?) of Hideyuki Shigeta and his wife infront of their little Volks shop where it all started http://www.zoukeimura.co.jp/en/sentiment/oyajiblog_048.html (scroll down a bit, the photo is close to the top of the page). Ooh my heart! This makes me feel very different about them, before I saw them like just a company but the photo and sweet story reminds us that they're human just like us and they have come a long way. It makes me feel even more proud to have my DDs. Thank you for sharing.
sleepywolf Posted July 29, 2016 Aww, that's such a sweet little story. Volks has come a long way, and now I can't get it out of my head that it's a mom-and-pop type of shop. XDIt certainly was a mom-and-pop type of shop back then. Now they're 300+ employees and have some 30 shops around the world. Hideyuki Shigeta is still the CEO though so hopefully some of the mom-and-pop-shop mindset is still there. Does anyone know whether or not they kept the original place, or if it's still standing, at least? Might make for an interesting little trip if/when we're in Japan.I doubt it. The japanese Wikipedia article for Volks says the address was 京都市上京区新町通り今出川上ル which I believe means Shinmachi Street in Kamigyo ward, Kyoto City (not sure about the 今出川上ル part though). "Walked" along Shinmachi Street with Google Street View but couldn't find the place. There's been a lot of rebuilding work done in the area in recent years so that shop building is probably long gone. The mix of old style Japanese brown wood houses and modern brick-and-glass office buildings in the areas is quite remarkable [rimg]http://www.dollfiedreams.com/gallery/image.php?album_id=201&image_id=846[/rimg]
