SylvanJade Posted August 2, 2016 Hey everyone, I don't know if this is in the right place, so please move it if it isn't. I have a question about changing a wig's style. I bought a long, wavy wig from Volks and I was wondering if I could permanently damage it by braiding it or putting it into a ponytail. By damage, I mean ruin the waves or cause kinks (therefore never getting it back to the way it used to be). Is it better to buy extra wigs with those styles in mind instead, or is it ok to style wigs like that? I can't post links yet, but it's the W-117D-613 Long Natural Wave - Ivory wig from Volks. Thank you!
Cauldroness Posted August 2, 2016 Wefted wigs are designed to have the fibers lay in only one direction -- they're not like human hair, which can be styled in variety of ways and aren't confined to only one direction. You can generally do minor style tweaks, like put a long wig into low pigtails, or put braids in it, or put it into a low ponytail. That won't cause any damage, although if you did a really tight braid and left it in for a while, it could cause some kinks in the wig. However, if you want to change the direction the hair fiber hangs -- like if you have a long wig, and you want a high ponytail -- then you need to buy a new wig: specifically, a wig already styled into a high ponytail. Putting a long wig into a high ponytail won't necessarily damage the wig, but it will look really terrible, since you'll see the large gaps between the wefts (multiple bald spots, essentially). Equally, wigs styled into high ponytails have to stay in ponytails can't be "let down," or else you'll end up with giant bald spots again. Doll Photos & Doll Jewelry Sales: Follow me on Instagram! SylvanJade Posted August 3, 2016 Wow, this was a really informative post! Thank you for going so much into the details. I'll have to play around with her wig and see if a low pony/braid/pigtails would work for her. And I'll look into getting a high pony wig as an alternative. Thank you Cauldroness!
