missadventure364 Posted August 20, 2016 Hey everyone! A few months ago I lucked out and got a Kos-Mos on Y!Japan for about $500USD- however, the reason she went for such a low price is because she was badly stained. Regardless, I jumped at the opportunity to buy her and decided to start attempting stain removal with DD Rescue Cream from Volks as soon as she got here. She started out looking like so- After a month of having the DD Rescue Cream applied, cleaned, and re-applied the stain removal was somewhat apparent but minimal. Now I didn't know at the time that the white skin tone does have issues with the DD Rescue Cream, but I could definitely see that being true in this case. By this point, I had run out of the Rescue Cream and wasn't really wanting to spend another $35 for something that was barely taking effect. I decided instead I would try something else, and the results were dramatic after only two days rather than a month. I used Tony Moly Tomatox Magic Massage Pack, which is a Korean Skin care product for your face. I know the pictures aren't the best, and believe me.. they don't show it nearly as well as you can tell in person, but there is a huge difference. I figure this is probably a safer product not only for the doll but for the handler as well. I hope this helps someone out! I since then have used some more Volks Stain Removal Cream, this time from the Volks USA store. She could still use another coatting, but my impatience has hit and I feel like I have to have her out with my other girls. Here's how she looks now. It's a huge improvement, even though there's still some staining to remove. Unfortunately the only parts I am missing from her full set are her blue undershirt and black tights, which I'm hoping to find eventually. Otherwise I am quite happy with this investment! KnittingFury Posted August 20, 2016 Wow, thanks for sharing this tip! It was bugging me how I was going to get some of the darker stains off my dolls since the rescue cream seemed overly gentle. It's definitely a huge improvement to your doll, it's almost impossible to see the stains in the last few photos.
foo Posted August 20, 2016 Wow, great work! BTW, it's actually the White Skin that has issues with stain removal, not Semi-White Skin, which is what KOS-MOS is. With White Skin, if you use the normal acne cream + heat lamp, it ends up yellowing. One very annoying problem with the Dream Rescue cream is that it has an expiry date, and if you buy stuff from the Volks JP Web Site store, based on my last two orders they'll only last a couple months (`ε´) It's one year from the manufacturing date on the package. The frustrating thing is when I was in Japan this past March, the different Volks stores I checked had 'fresh' stock of the Dream Rescue Cream, manufactured 2016. I wish I bought one, but I wanted to put more faith in the remaining stuff I had at home, because it was kind of new. It turns out I did need to replace that, and I just used my replacement one and it's already weak( i _ i )It was manufactured in October 2015.
sleepywolf Posted August 20, 2016 Yikes! Judging by the stain patterns it looks like she got stained by her original outfit. I've heard of other cases of Kos-Mos getting stained by the default outfit but for some reason my Kos-Mos shows no sign of staining at all. This whole staining problem seems so random. While some ppl experiences staining issues with a particular outfit, others don't. I know high temperatures and humidity can make DD more likely to get stained but I wonder if there are other factors involved. Like air-bound chemicals from air fresheners or something. Nice to see you were able to fix it. This shows that stains aren't the end of the world and can be removed with the right treatment. missadventure364 Posted August 20, 2016 Thanks for the info Foo! I really appreciate it. She was definitely stained from her original outfit, unfortunately it seems I'm now missing all of the parts that caused the majority of the staining. Not being her first owner I'm honestly not sure what kind of environment she was kept in. Either way, I'll probably be buying new clothes for her soon unless I can find the rest of her outfit set. Oh my gosh, that outfit is tough to put on! I actually used the stain removal cream the day I got it, and it seemed pretty fresh. Of course it may have been older anyway, I didn't look too closely for an expiration date. It's okay though. If it expires that quickly I will definitely try to use what I have remaining before it goes bad.
BeyondTime Posted August 21, 2016 What I have found is important with dream rescue is to use a thick enough layer. I know Volks says apply a thin layer, but I think what that means is don't put a great big glop of it on. I want to say I layer it about 1/16 of an inch thick, and it's always worked like a charm. I washed the black parts of Kos-Mos outfit, and it still left black on the dd protective tape I used on her. I have since shoved a large hand in one of the stockings, left it there for a month, and it came out stain free. Maybe the tape was more susceptible to staining than vinyl. When I cleaned up my badly stained Yui Hirasawa I found there was a point when the cream stopped working on some of the really dark stain spots, but if I discontinued use for a few weeks then re-applied it started working again. No idea why that would be the case, but it worked. Also once you get them light enough you may find they fade on their own after a month or so. Great job on the stain removal. It's always really nice to find a rescue doll and fix her up. More than just cost savings you get something someone else no longer wanted - possibly due to the damage - and get fix it up like new. The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be. “Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction
missadventure364 Posted August 21, 2016 I'm glad I'm not the only one who used a lot of the cream! I used about the same amount actually, and wrapped it in Siran wrap then taped around it to seal in the cream. Partially to prevent it from getting everywhere, and in part so my cats wouldn't try to lick it. I Really hope the rest of the stains continue to fade, that would be amazing! I agree 100% that a rescue doll can be so much more than just a money saving investment. I always like dolls I get to put more time and effort into a little bit more. I used about the same amount actually, and wrapped it in Siran wrap then taped around it to seal in the cream. Partially to prevent it from getting everywhere, and in part so my cats wouldn't try to lick it. Volks suggests covering to keep it moist, but I've never fully wrapped it. I just cut up a zip lock bag and lay the strips over the top of the cream. I have yet to find stains I couldn't 100% remove except Yui's feet which were a total loss. Most of her stains took 2 weeks or so, but the dark spots that ran from her right hip to her navel took a lot longer. The one under her navel took 4 weeks to fade to a point that it was light, and then faded the rest of the way on it's own after a few months. I'm pretty sure if you keep at it you will get her 100%, but you can always replace a part if needed. I had no reservations about replacing Yui's feet. I knew it would be a waste of time trying to remove those stains. The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Jossie Posted September 1, 2016 Wow, what a difference. Her legs are practically purple in the first photo. There's something really satisfying about being able to restore a doll that was offloaded as too damaged. On an unrelated note, I laughed when you mentioned using Tony Moly! Who knew- thanks for the tip! XD
rukitron Posted September 2, 2016 I've had minor staining issues, but I find a lamp and pimple cream insanely effective it varies from a couple of hours to just a week or two. Don't do pure sunlight, that takes forever and risks yellowing faster.
ingeneu Posted September 30, 2016 Wow, thanks for the tip of using tony moly! I defiantly need to try that for some stubborn spots that volks rescue cream is barely working on after a couple of months of applying, cleaning, reapplying. Could be also that it's expired, but then I lost the outer packaging to know for certain. /= Though, I'm curious to know if there's been any changes since using the tony moly solution since you last used it and what gave you the idea to even try that? Most awesome!
