Smoke Outside and Protection for DD?

Recommended Posts

Noxxbunny

Potentially weird question here...but the area I live in is getting a lot of smoke rolling through the air right now from the fires down south, and I'm worried about the smell clinging. While it's apparently not hazardous to health...it DOES smell heavily of smoke outside. With the heat and my lack of AC, leaving the window shut until it goes away isn't an option. My room would easily swelter to 85+ degrees during the day without me cooling it down at night.

So how do I protect my DD and doll clothes and such? Seal them up in boxes for now? Is it even necessary? I don't really know about its potential to linger or to cause damage to the vinyl. It just smells like it would stick? I know lots of people here live way more directly in the fire zones than I do, so maybe you have some tips for me. the air doesn't typically get like this here for so long, so I'm starting to worry about these things.

I would definitely seal them in boxes for now as well as their clothes and things. Smoke smell can stick for YEARS.

Yeah, sealing stuff up probably is the best option for now. Better to be safer. It's been especially awful today. It's been setting off allergies in me that I didn't even know I had. I definitely don't want that smell lingering around in here because of that.

I agree that sealing up your valuable doll things is probably a good idea for now. I also live in a non-airconditioned apartment, and I have to have the windows open for at least a few hours each day, all year round.

I have purchased clothing items that smelled (expectedly or unexpectedly) of cigarette smoke. I wasn't sure if I could wash them. So I put baking soda in the bottom of a plastic box, and loosely folded white tissue paper over the clothes and put them into the plastic box with the lid on. The smell came out after a few days, or was greatly diminished. I don't smoke, so I'm pretty sensitive to the smell of it.

I live with two (outdoor) smokers, so I'm used to having to protect my items (mainly my own clothes) from cigarette smoke. I absolutely despise the smell, so I'm also quite sensitive to it. It would disgust me to smell like that, or to have any of my stuff smell like that. So I go to great lengths to keep it away from me. Seems like I've succeeded, since I've never had anyone say they smelled it on me or any items I've sold off over the years.

But wildfire smoke is something I don't normally deal with, at least not for more than a day or two. And not on the scale it was at last night. This has been going on for like a week. It's been hard to figure out what to do about it. :/ I have to breathe the air sometime.

It was so bad last night that I had to go with dealing with the heat because I couldn't take having the window open anymore. Went to bed with dry eyes, irritated skin, and a cough. I wouldn't say I'm sensitive to smoke, but it really got me.

I've lived with cigarette smokers in the past, and it really does make a difference if they smoke outdoors.

I can't imagine what you're going through with the wildfire smoke, though! I'm sorry to hear the fires are so close to you. We've been having a super dry summer and there are a lot of fires to the east of where I am, but nothing here. Are they making progress putting the fires out?

Can you put a fan in the window blowing outwards? It wouldn't be much help from the heat, but at least air could get in and less smoke would come in with it!

Unfortunately, it's a very large fire and they're having a hard time putting it out. They are progressing with that though. They've gotten it about 60% contained. It's going on about an hour south of me. The winds have just really been blowing all the smoke north though.

I didn't even think of having the fan blow out! I'll do that. Today unfortunately didn't let up with the smell much either, so I'm glad I opted to box things up for now.

My apartment has a mold/mildew problem, and sometimes cigarette smoke seepage from other units, so I can verify that having the fan point out can help with odors. . . unfortunately, in my case, the odors are coming from *inside*, so the poor fan can only do so much. >.<

In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

Having the fan point outwards keeps the air from getting stale and still allows for some circulation while keeping bad smells and whatnot outside where they belong! I love doing it that way.

Thanks for the help, guys. pointing the fan out did help a lot! Luckily, it seems the smoke smell has cleared for now. It's been a couple days, so now I think I can go back to my normal methods of displaying my stuff now lol.
