Ie-Aster Posted September 30, 2016 Wondering if anyone else here is interested in some of the old Soviet made lenses which can be mounted to modern cameras via adapters. I have an Industar 61 L/Z and Helios 44-2 at the post office right now so I hope to post some shots from them once I get out of work and pick them up. I'll admit I did choose those two in part for the interesting bokeh qualities Given that my only lens for a long time was the Canon 50mm f/1.8 I don't know how objectively I'll be able to comment on them cf. modern lenses, but I'm still very excited. sinclair Posted September 30, 2016 I've been wanting to pick up some cheap old lenses myself fro my camera. What camera body do you have? Mine is a Panasonic GF5, micro four thirds. I picked a mFT camera just because they are one of the best to use old glass with due to the shorter lens mounting plane then lenses made for SLR bodies. I have a small handful of Canon FD and FL glass from my film days that I use with it. Most of the photos I take of my girl have been with my Canon nFD 50/1.8. asianed Posted October 3, 2016 I've toyed around with getting some of these older lenses and an adapter to make them work. I've seen a lot of great things about the Helios and that neat swirling bokeh pattern it produces. I'd love to see what you do with it!
Eustia Posted October 3, 2016 I've been tempted by a few. There's amazing bokeh to be had out of some with their huge amount of blades -- some of those old Russian lenses had a whole lot. My oldest lens I have is a 1967 50mm 1.4 super-takumar with a thorium element. Has yellowed over time due to the radioactive decay, though I have treated it (a whole process unto itself) which removed most of the yellowing; the lens still has an interesting feel over modern digital lenses. Ie-Aster Posted October 12, 2016 sinclair, I have a Canon EOS T1i. I'm very old school it was a gift from high school days, when I was very into photography before giving it up throughout college (and promptly taking it up again after graduating!). It sadly has the low light performance of a dead rat, but otherwise is pretty okay. If I upgrade I'd like to try a mirrorless camera for similar reasons of how well old glass works with it, but I'd for sure go for full frame because I'm often shooting in very tight spaces (viz. my fire escape, because I live in a city and am too afraid of people to bring dolls to parks) and most lenses I like are 50mms. Do you find the crop of the micro 4/3 sensor to be difficult when shooting your girl? asianed, I'll post photos soon--sadly the way the Helios fits with the screwmount-to-EOS adapter makes it extremely annoying to focus, but it looks gorgeous when it works. The Industar 61 works beautifully with the adapter and I have quite a few shots with it I'll upload later. I'd definitely recommend it for doll photos. Eustia, I've read about that lens! Admittedly I was a chem major and still nerd out a bit about radioactivity Do you have any shots with it? I've seen Soviet lenses with 20 blades on eBay. I might have to try out one some time. sinclair Posted October 13, 2016 My 1st real camera was a Canon AE-1, hence my old FD/FL glass. As for shooting with the old glass, 50mm becomes 100mm so I have to stand back farther than I like, but that's about it. I do want to find something like a Canon nFD 24 or 28mm to shoot with so I can get closer. So I don't find it difficult, just challenging, which is good as it forces me to think.
