Tiriaq Posted October 16, 2016 I've finally managed to save up money in a few years and I want to order it as complete as possible but there don't seem to be special DD3 hands so I guess it's DD2 but on the website they have large and small. (1) Which hands are best for my DDdy Base Body III /Normal? (large/small/DD2?) (2) are the wigs 9-10" or 8-9"? (DDH-10 or DDH-07 not sure which one yet) (3) can you wear high heels as easy with standard feet? (4) Can anyone recommend me eyes that have more depth? (5) How bad is staining on these dolls? I'm used to just put anything on my SD's (6) the main goal is photography, also outside. How bad is the yellowing or weathering on these dolls? (7) I think when someone took out the eyes the head was squishy, isn't that destroying the faceup? (I'm going to have a custom done) (8) Are there doable ways to put a non-anime head on the DD3 body, like my SD16's have more humanlike heads? Sorry for all the questions, DK eu website is making their order to Japan on 28th and I want to be on time for that. Tiriaq
toughstermcg Posted October 16, 2016 (1) I'm pretty sure the DD2 hands aren't small vs large, it's more normal vs. large -- there's regular sized hands, and then the large version are for a more oversized, maybe cartoony look? Either size would fit a DDdy body, it's just a matter of your preference. (5) Vinyl dolls stain pretty easily from dark clothing, red clothing, or even dark colored thread and black wig caps, so many owners will invest in a body stocking or protective wig cap (available from Volks or other sellers like CoolCat), and some people like to gently wash dark clothing before letting a doll wear them. If you're very worried about stains, you may want to only put your doll in dark clothing for a short time (ie as long as it takes to do a photoshoot) and change them into lighter-colored clothing for more long term display. If stains do happen, there are ways to deal with them, like Mr. Clean Magic Erasers or 10% benzo zit cream to sort of "bleach" the stain out. (6) Vinyl doesn't really yellow the same way resin does, as far as I've seen it mostly retains its color over time. All the same, it's probably fine to take dolls out for the day for photos but for long-term storage and display I'd keep them out of the sunlight. (8) Not 100% sure about DD3, but on my DD2 body I've done hybrids with resin heads. One method is to drill a hole through a bottlecap and use that as a stopper to keep the head on the neck peg (I haven't done this personally, only heard about it). Another method is to loop some elastic around the arm peg, through the chest piece, and up through the neck, where you can use it to attach with an S-hook as normal. This can be a little wobbly and awkward though.

Maybe one day I'll try it if I have the doll at home I can compare the size with my 58 and 63cm SD's. I'm so excited now that I'm finally actually making the order. Glad I can do it from EU now and not Japan, saves me a lot of money.
foo Posted October 16, 2016 (1) Which hands are best for my DDdy Base Body III /Normal? (large/small/DD2?) It's a matter of which you prefer; the choice is between Normal and Large (I think the product ID is "DD2", but the hands didn't change for DD3 bodies so the same ones are used). Here's an older thread discussing the differences and showing examples of the two, viewtopic.php?f=8&t=12265 (2) are the wigs 9-10" or 8-9"? (DDH-10 or DDH-07 not sure which one yet) Generally 8-9", but some heads are small and some heads are big. DDH-07 is apparently a big head. If a store has a selection of 8-9" wigs and 9-10" wigs, you should be safe with 8-9". In the case of Crobi, they have 8" wigs and 9-10", and the 8" wigs are small for dolls with big heads. (3) can you wear high heels as easy with standard feet? It depends if the shoe is made for high-heeled feet, or just has high heels. If it's made for high heeled feet, well the DD's foot is flat so it will look awkward if the foot is visible, and the doll will have trouble standing. But a lot of high-heeled shoes work fine with standard feet. Volks doesn't make high heeled feet for DDs. (4) Can anyone recommend me eyes that have more depth? Lizanna is fantastic. It's run by juu-yuki who posts store updates on this forum. (5) How bad is staining on these dolls? I'm used to just put anything on my SD's They get stained, but they can be cleaned so it's not exactly a "stain." There's an informative post in the Care & Repairs section. Some fabrics won't stain (polyester). Cotton fabrics can stain depending on how strongly it's been dyed. If something looks like it will stain wash/rinse it in cold water, and you likely have to wash several times. It's best to check if something's going to stain on a spare part first before putting it on the doll, even after washing. If you washed two socks, only put one sock on to test (・・') Nowadays I have a pretty good eye for what looks like it will stain and what doesn't (if the fabric looks like it's rich with dye, it will stain ). Other than washing, using a body suit (I cut one up to do specific parts, like legs or arms) or Volks' stain prevention tape will help (it's best to put the tape on the clothing instead of the doll, and stuff can still stain through the tape). For new outfits that seem iffy (dark colours & reds), take them off frequently and inspect the doll to see if it's stained at all. You can keep it on longer & longer until you've figured out if it needs to be washed more or stained. Light stains will also fade with time. Your doll will go through a lot of different clothing because you don't want to leave something on too long
Nekopon Posted October 16, 2016 Hello! Hope these answers will be helpful to you. (1) DD2 and DD3 hands are the same. Small and Large are only to preference, but they both fit in DD. These: http://volksusastore.com/webstores/dollfie/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=826 (2) To my knowledge, I've had no problems with 8-9" wigs on any of my heads. Some may be tighter than others because of slight size differences. If you end up with 9-10" wigs, you can double up on wig caps if it's too loose on the head. (3) They only have standard feet. Unlike SDs, they don't prefer another pair of feet to wear high heels. (4) There are a ton of eye makers out there, depends on what you're looking for. Volks have a lot of eyes to start with but some interesting ones include Lizanna, Ronronshuka, Hisyo-Hisyo, SQ Labs, Kurokami, Blue Rose Garden, White Dolly Story. (5) I think it's very likely they will stain. Even more likely with darker clothing. To minimize (but no failproof), there are body suits and tape that can be used on DDs. (6) Not as bad as SDs but I still recommend not leaving them out in sunlight. (7) Hm, I've done this a lot and I haven't seen any damages on my customs. Perhaps it depends on the tools the artist uses. (8) I'm no expert on this one but when I did try to put a SD head on my DD, I used rubber bands tied multiple times on the neck part so the SD has something to grip on. It's not the best solution but it does keep the head up. More research is definitely needed on this one.
Tiriaq Posted October 16, 2016 Thanks, foo for all the information. Most of the eyes were sold out but it was nice to take a look, only I still don't see the difference between those hands lol. It's okay... I hope to find a side by side comparison later. Generally 8-9", but some heads are small and some heads are big. DDH-07 is apparently a big head. If a store has a selection of 8-9" wigs and 9-10" wigs, you should be safe with 8-9". In the case of Crobi, they have 8" wigs and 9-10", and the 8" wigs are small for dolls with big heads. Because on my SD16 there is almost no chance I'm getting the 8"-9" properly done. I need to stretch them with all my might and they can hardly be positioned anymore or they'll come off. And 9-10 are often so damn rare. (5) How bad is staining on these dolls? I'm used to just put anything on my SD's They get stained, but they can be cleaned so it's not exactly a "stain." I just hope the material can take a lot of beating like it's not drying out/brittle from certain chemicals but it's probably thought about what to use to avoid that. Your doll will go through a lot of different clothing because you don't want to leave something on too long I do have a little headstart from my 1:3 SD-16's! But I need more clothes as usual, especially because I don't want to photograph the same clothes over and over. 'Normal' photography and very unique edited works. I sure hope it will not take hours to do a setup for my poses because with the strings most of the times I lose the pose and many just can't be done even with hotglue etc.

Tiriaq Posted October 19, 2016 Actually, I prefer large hands, the size is more natural. I am contemplating to sell my entire small hand set just to make way for large hand, but I think the small hand set can be reserved for Dollfie Dream Pretty... I was already trying not to buy too many small hands at the same time. So, I think I'll just check the original and one additional pair of hands. Too bad I think many poses are just not for me like that peace sign and cat hand. Or maybe in the future when I'm bored. I hope to find more hands than the official website offers. Thanks for the tip, I hope I can get to see some clear pictures of these hands or better in comparison. Hopefully from you!

Cauldroness Posted October 19, 2016 Actually, I prefer large hands, the size is more natural. I am contemplating to sell my entire small hand set just to make way for large hand, but I think the small hand set can be reserved for Dollfie Dream Pretty... I'm the reverse -- I really dislike the large hands, they make me think of Mickey Mouse hands, so I sold my entire large hand collection and have only the "regular" hands now. One thing to note, the size difference is quite noticeable, so it looks pretty goofy if you mix the original size and the large size. You can see a comparison between the two hand sizes in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5799&start=20 Here's another thread with comparisons: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=7193 Doll Photos & Doll Jewelry Sales: Follow me on Instagram! toughstermcg Posted October 19, 2016 Thanks for sharing more clear comparisons! I was on the fence, but I think I like the standard size more, personally.
Tiriaq Posted October 20, 2016 the size difference is quite noticeable, so it looks pretty goofy if you mix the original size and the large size. Oh nice, thank you for showing me that. I... think I'll stay with the small hands as well. If I was making a boy those big hands are better. Glad that is taken care of now, because it's already getting VERY expensive - also buying a 3D printer that I have to build and calibrate. I really hope to show you guys some awesome DD3 custom items!
AntElitist Posted October 21, 2016 Eventually the reason why I decided to stick with the large hands is because the Love sign hands are large size, and the large hands holding pose is much better in my opinion. (Before hand I prefer the small size hands too) Most 1/3 scale props like katana and gun requires the large hands. This is the love sign hands and only available in large:

(Before hand I prefer the small size hands too) I noticed that some of the hands are only in large version, bit of shame. I hope I can order the love hands from dreamdolls dk but I haven't had an answer yet if it was possible. I wonder if I can try to design my own hands once I build the 3D printer and get it calibrated -and- learn how to design. It's probably too much but we can hope... (seems the love hands may be doable of how big they are, thnx)
