Trimming Wigs

Recommended Posts

Does anyone trim wigs once you get them on your doll?

Ok, so I bought 2 pretty gorgeous wigs from Leekeworld, but the bangs are well...long. Hairs are constantly hanging in Jayde's eyes and makes her look a little shaggy, lol.

I was wondering if anyone else trimmed their wigs? Does this damage the wig at all?

Thanks all!

I've trimmed some of my wigs. If you're not careful, it could turn out poorly. I ruined one long wig by trying to cut it into a short style--won't be doing that again. I've trimmed bangs successfully, though. What I do is take small strands at a time, spread the hairs out, and snip vertically with the scissors. That will give it a soft feathered look instead of a blunt cut (unless you want a blunt cut, in which case be super careful to keep it even). It won't grow back so just cut a bit at a time and see how it looks.

That's a really good tip! I've definitely made some ugly, sloppy-looking trims on bangs before so I've been shy about trying again, haha. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I decide to try it.

Here are a few more tips for trimming wigs! It's scary at first, and it can go wrong if you're not careful. If you take your time you can certainly neaten up long bangs.

1. Always work over a bin / plastic bag to catch the hair. Trimming wigs can be messy and you don't want tiny fibres all over the place.

2. I find it helps to use hairclips to pin the wefts back, so I can work on one weft at a time. I start at the bottom weft (the one closest to the edge of the wigcap) and gradually let the others down layer by layer.

3. I like to hold /flatten the weft I'm working on between my index and middle fingers and then with a pair of small sharp scissors cut vertically into the hair. Tiny little feather cuts, it won't look like you're doing much at first but...

4. Go slow! You can always trim more off, but you can't put it back! It's a really good idea to check the length of the first few wefts by slipping the wig back on your doll.

5. Give the wig a good shake before you put it back on your doll. Tiny fibres are a pain to get out of eye putty and they'll stick to everything! D:

Good luck if you decide to try it!

I prefer to trim while on the doll as it's easier to judge it that way. The downside is all the tiny fibers all over, down cleavage, inside clothes, etc.

You can take the wig off, cover the doll in plastic wrap, then put the wig on. The plastic wrap is like a bib, but it also covers the face.
