What should I look for in eyes?

Recommended Posts

SolicitorPirate

So I'm currently in the process of getting my first Dollfie. My DDH-07 with her custom face up should be arriving in a few days, and I'm now looking into getting some eyes for her.

Besides aesthetics, is there anything I should be looking for in eyes? Like are there common quality or fitting issues I should be aware of?

Also, what size would fit the DDH 07 head best?

Can't really help with eye quality, I think. I'm still a newbie to eyes in general. I own a few acrylics, a few resin pairs. But...I haven't really developed a preference for either yet.

But when it comes to DDH-07 and eye size, it sort of depends on how much white of the eyes you want showing.

For a lot of white of the eye, I'd go 20mm-22mm, and 24mm for pretty much none. It can look really doe-eyed depending on the eye shape too. I like the white of the eyes, so I personally tend to stick to 20-22mm.

More usually than not, resin eyes are of better quality than acrylics, because they allow for better light and shine on the eyes. But they eventually yellow so the color will change and the white won't be as white anymore, I don't know how long that really takes (and for what it's worth, I have a pair of pretty old acrylic eyes that their white has also yellowed? The dome is still clear-clear though, not yellowing, so the color hasn't changed).

Another thing to keep in mind is metallicity.Metallic ink eyes, like sold by Volks and Lizanna (and others I don't know off the top of my head) will make a doll look more lively because they reflect more light. Non-metallics will look more dull and it is easier for the eyes to look pure black (no highlights, irises--kind of unsettling) in photos. That said you can get around it with how you light the doll for a photo.

Also, for animetics, make sure the printed image used in high resolution! otherwise the eye will look pixelated and weird in closeups.
