Can I brush on a sealer for a faceup?

Recommended Posts

I don't have the money for an airbrush. All I have is a paint brush lol. Do I have to dilute the sealer with water?

I highly do not suggest brushing on a sealant. As it will smudge up and most likely ruin your hard work.

I have tried brushing on a sealant on a custom doll and it made it look messy and clumpy due to how uneven brush strokes are.

You can use alternatives such as Mr. Super Clear(matte or flat) which is a spray, although highly toxic, you must use proper equipment(Gas mask and gloves) prior to using this.

I have used Mr.Super Clear(ranges from $13 to $20 and it lasts for several face ups) for face ups and they come out perfect

I have not once lost hard work from it.

The Junkie Spot carries MSC (aka Mr. Super Clear) for $12.99 ($14.99 for UV cut). As it's an aerosol it has to be shipped by ground. I may seem a little pricy but one can can last you about 10 face-ups.

As mentioned by Mario, MSC is toxic (as are most aerosols) and precautions should be taken when using. Spray in a well ventilated area and wear a respirator with organic vapor cartridges. Alternately you can use it outdoors (weather permitting) and stand up wind of your spray. Use several light coats to avoid cracking and/or milking of the finish.

MSC can be found under "Supplies".

Btw just to let anyone know whoever sees this thread, Volks USA will be having a restock on MSC(Mr.Super Clear).

Expectancy of restock is before the end of the year.

As usual shipping outside of the 48 continental states (US) is prohibited. Although they will contact you for a different shipment method which allows hazardous materials to be shipped internationally.

UPDATE: A faceup artist has done an experiment on the "brush on sealant" thing.

To those that don't want to watch the video:

1. She first attempts to dab the sealant with 60% water and 40% sealant with a soft sponge

She was having massive trouble having the color pencil stick onto it and issues having the color stay onto the doll + applying more sealant for layers caused the color to come off. Wetting the colored pencils did not help.

2. She eventually gave up and used the sealant as an acrylic surface to paint on the acrylics instead. She couldn't use the colored pencils

3. At the end she brushed on the sealant with a soft brush. And relied on gravity to spread the sealant evenly.

And this is at the end to show pros and cons of MSC and Liquid sealants.

Another quick note is that brushing on liquid sealants tend to make the doll more "sticky" and "shiny". Another face up artist has informed others about this.

btw how long does msc take to dry? I just got it in the mail and want to get to work on my faceup.

And where is a good place to post pics of my faceup when I'm done?

In my experience with MSC I waited 30 minutes each coat just to make sure it's 100% completely dry.(I know it's long but it's worth it. Some people probably wait less. Not sure.)

We have a Painting and Customization section here.

Please make sure you have protective gear and make sure to prime your doll with MSC spraying from a distance to evenly coat the face. (I usually do 3 coats before I actually begin the face up).

I am a freak when it comes to making sure it dries I guess. Whether I do my face ups on DDs or resin bjds I wait 24 between each coat even in the hot California summer. Now that I live in a cooler area I sometimes wait a couple of days.

In a cool, dry room (New England autumn) I waited about 20 minutes between coats and it worked fine.

If you are using the matte finish, it should be dry when it no longer looks shiny.

I recommend not waiting in the room for it to dry, and I also recommend opening a window and having a fan direct air out the window. Make sure the fan is not in a position to blow onto the head (because of dust).

If some dust does get on the drying MSC, you can very carefully use a sharp metal point to remove it. But this isn't going to work if there is a lot of dust.
