Protecting the smile of best girl Rem...

 

It's been almost two and a half years since I entered the world of Dollfie Dream and started my first custom Dollfie project, Arcueid Brunestud. It would take me another 8 months before I finally completed her (during which I ended up adopting an official Volks Saber Lily), after which I decided that would be the end of it and I would live happily ever after. Or so I thought...

 

While 2016 was a shitty year in various other areas, it was a

. More Gundam, more One adaptations, some new Trigger works, plenty of good sequels, tons of quality feels, and of course more isekai series. One of which was Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (or just Re:Zero for short), an isekai light novel adaptation featuring a shitty male protagonist

, a pair of twin maids (one who is Best Girl and the other a computer part), an

(minus the onee-sama), and #TeamFelix.

 

In any case, despite not-so-secretly having a maid fetish (with an entire Detolf shelf dedicated to maid figures), I was admittedly not all that much a fan of Rem until episode 18, during which she immediately became Best Girl. And then

 

And so, like the rest of the interwebs, I was pretty upset for a good while, until I came across SEN/DollHouse's newest listing on TaoBao: a Rem (or Ram) Dollfie Dream outfit set. If Subaru-kun didn't want to protect that precious smile, I will. And so began Project Rem.

 

The Plan

 

Rem's design is somewhat unique but nothing too fancy. An odd maid outfit, short blue hair with overhanging princess cut in front, some flowery hair decorations, simple blue eyes, and a cute smile.

The Rem/Ram outfit Taobao listing from SEN/DollHouse actually included options for not only the outfit but also the wig, eyes and shoes, so rather than having to hunt down each outfit part separately like I did for Arcueid, I just bought everything all at once (using SpreeNow for my proxy).

 

For the head and body, I went with a semi-white DDH-06 head and semi-white DDIII body with an M-bust, ordered directly from Volks USA. The DollHouse model uses a normal DDH-07 (I think?) head with an L bust but I think an DDH-06's rounder face looks better, her skin is definitely lighter than normal, and while Rem does have a large chest, they're definitely nothing compared to Arcueid's.

 

For the face-up, I went directly to jadepixel, who had previously done the face-up for Arcueid V1. She quickly whipped up a mock in Photoshop that said nothing short of "yes".

 

The Parts

 

And so, I started going down the list step by step. First was of course the outfit from Taobao, which I made sure to thoroughly inspect before deciding to proceed.

 

Of note is that the black sleeves WILL STAIN, so some inner protection is definitely needed. In the below picture I used a folded up Monopoly $1 paper bill, but I later went and bought a roll of Tamiya-brand masking tape, which is also very popular in model kit/garage kit communities for its flexibility and not leaving behind residue glue.

 

Arcueid modelling with the outfit. Arc's shapely L bust definitely bulged out from the designed-for-M-bust-top a bit, but that's got it's own appeal I suppose.

 

Next up was the Volks USA order for the head and body. Since it was free shipping, I also picked up a third metal stand, a stand replacement joint, and some more wig oil.

 

The semi-white M-bust body definitely fit the outfit much better. A bit baggy in the front but should be fine (there's no mid-ground between M and L bust unfortunately)

 

And last but not least, the face-up from jadepixel. Had to later give the front bangs a quick trim to look less brushed-aside and more hime-cut, but otherwise perfection. Compared to the more mature-looking, anime-like DDH-07 head I used for Arc, the rounder, more childish DDH-06 fits Rem much better.

 

The total:

- SEN/DollHouse Rem outfit + eyes + wig + shoes: ~$80

- SpreeNow proxy fee + shipping: ~$30

- Volks DDH-06 head semi-white: $42

- Volks DDIII base body semi-white: $308

- jadepixel custom face-up: $85

- Total: ~$545 USD (cheaper than an official character collab Dollfie Dream!)

 

Project Rem was much, much easier than both Arcueid V0 and Arcueid V1. Since she came out perfect the first time, there probably won't be a V2 (or was there a V0 either this time). But then again, things were so straightforward (I've also learned quite a bit about putting together custom Dollfies since I first started) that I could barely even call this a "project". Oh well, doesn't matter, smile protected. Speaking of smiles...

She is absolutely adorable, kawaii! I'll admit, I started watching the show, but quit after a while. Too gruesome and got tired of the return by death thing. But I did love the character design. I'm in the Emilia camp, but the maid sisters are cute too. You have to get Ram now, can't have one without the other, IMHO.

WOW! Rem came out awesome and lovely. I do love Rem's design but I just could not get into the anime. The main character guy is so annoying and dumb which ruined the whole anime. But the maid twin sisters were great.

Oh my, sweet Rem! So kawaii!

I must say I actually have not even started to watch the show, too little time now. But I look forward to it, since I really like the maids.

I still can't believe you got her ENTIRE clothing setup with shoes and wig for just around $80. That is INSANELY cheap in my opinion! It's just amazing that the clothing and everything else looks so damn good for such a low price. Kudos again!

Thank you for sharing these wonderful photos and the backstory/process of how you did this. I think it's a great idea to show people how you can get a character done when there isn't one ready made for you to buy. It isn't super difficult if you do your research and take your time.

Who is this "Ram" you speak of? Sounds like an unimportant side character

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY. His teeth should have been kicked down his throat for even THINKING of another woman after that absurdly adorable speech from Rem.

Of all the anime I've seen (which is quite a lot), I'd rank Subaru as 3rd worst male protagonist that I would want to punch, behind Makoto from School Days and Shinji from Evangelion. He was Mr. Good Guy in some parts, but for most of the show he was an obnoxious, selfish jerk.

 

Jadepixel did a great job on her, she's totally adorbs!

She's currently closed for custom face-up commissions (I probably got priority since I know her in person and live nearby) but there's no harm in sending her an email/message and adding yourself to the queue.

I'm not too impressed by the eyes (wish they were metallic instead of plain) and the wig did need that extra bit of trimming to get the proper hime-cut shape (was really nervous when I brought out the scissors) but overall it was quite a convenient all-in-one package. Otherwise I might not have gone ahead with the project. Ironically the only missing part to the outfit was panties, but I happened to have an extra pair from a previous Taobao order (was originally going to try to sell it later but looks like it found a use!)

The outfit has an inner white layer for protection, but the detached sleeves are just plain black velvet which are quite a tight fit (otherwise they'd slip off I would assume) so some inner protection is a must, especially around the elbows. I've luckily yet to see any staining but I got the tip-off from someone else in the DD Facebook group who bought the same outfit (and also made his own custom Rem).

By "skillz" you would be referring to jadepixel's amazing face-up and SEN's detailed outfit making. All I did with put it together

Keep in mind the USD -> RMB conversion rate. $80 here is the equivalent of a few weeks/months of salary for a person in China. As another example, Arcueid's custom kimono was only $100 (600 RMB) but would have cost far, far more if it were tailored by someone from Japan or the US.

I was thinking of it, but then I realized I would need an alternate head/face-up which I would rarely use except for that one photoshoot (putting on and taking off the wig + head band is also a pain, especially the pink X hairclip which keeps falling off). I also rarely swap outfits on my dolls except maybe for special occasions (e.g. Christmas). Arcueid's been wearing her same modified outfit (keyhole turtleneck and red glasses) for the past year or so and I've still yet to commission her cannonic princess outfit from anyone yet. That said, Rem's horn and morning star look like something I could probably 3D print or craft somehow, but that would be a separate project for later~

Holymoly that custom is fantastic. Her face is so adorable. I've yet to see the series but I'm familiar with the character, she has such a simplistic yet unique and adorable design. Thanks for sharing the progress!
